In conjunction with their lesson on weather, students in Kate Castellano and Megan Moore’s thirdgrade class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District took out their sunglasses, scarves, hats and umbrellas as they presented weather reports to their classmates on March 10th.

Each student acted as a

weather forecaster, giving their five-day report on temperatures, what to wear, and how to prepare for the upcoming weather.

Students also provided comment cards to their peers about what they liked most about their weather presentation.

were just some of the exercises in which students and families participated in throughout the evening as they rotated through different stations every 15 minutes. Trainers from Big Al’s Family Fitness in Amityville led the fitness stations, engaging participants in exercises

such as a strength and conditioning course, team workout challenges and high-energy cardiovascular training routines.

Seeing the Signs I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable.

Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create.

Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring.

I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me.

Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing?

Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet.

A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

Student achievement was the focal point of the Amityville Union Free School District’s Board of Education meeting on March 8th.

The evening began with a sneak peak of the Drama Club’s upcoming music production, “The Addams Family.” The cast performed the song “When You’re an Addams.”

High school Acting Principal Dr. Lois Etzel announced that Esteban Idrovo Ponce was named the valedictorian of the Class of 2017, and Lawrence Haave is the salutatorian. The audience was treated to a video featuring this year’s top 25 graduates, who each spoke of their college plans and what they will miss most about Amityville Memorial High School.

Athletics Director Evan Farkas recognized two basketball players who each scored their 1,000th career points this year.

Junior Josh Serrano, whom Farkas called one of the premier players in New York state, achieved the milestone for the boys varsity team and will continue building on his total next year.

Senior La’Niya Clark will graduate as one of the top three scorers in Amityville history for the Lady Warriors. The athletes were each joined by their coaches.

Mr. Farkas also recognized the boys varsity track team, which won the Suffolk County championship under coach Reynolds Hawkins. Senior Emmanuel Oguntoye won the New York State championship in the triple jump and finished fourth in the long jump. He was also presented with his trophy for earning Suffolk County’s Most Outstanding Athlete Award. Alijah Benymon finished fifth in the state in the triple jump, and Jacob Marrero and Terrance Hinds qualified for and competed in the state championship. Mr. Hawkins won Suffolk County coach of the year.

Hearing this, my grandchild burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?”

As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table.

He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.”

“Really?” my grandson asked.

“Cross my heart,” the man replied.

Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing) “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.”

Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal.

My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman.

With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you.
