For The Aging Announce Babylon Winter Senior Advocate Schedule
Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.
“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the
Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”
Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Babylon:
• North Amityville Nutrition Center, 48-C Cedar Road, Amityville: Wednesday, March 20, 10 am – 1 pm
• Spangle Drive Center, 4385 Spangle Drive, North Babylon: Tuesday, March 19, 12 – 3:30 pm
• West Babylon Library, 211 Route 109, West Babylon: Thursday, March 28, 10 am – 12 pm Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP –formerly known as food stamps), Medicare Savings Program and
Heating Emergency Assistance Program (HEAP) applications. They also can provide information on Medicare, answer questions and make recommendations and referrals. Designing Their Dream House
DESIGNING THEIR DREAM HOUSE - Third graders in Ms. Capuana’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently used their mathematics lessons to design their own class dream house. The class has been studying area – length x width – and brainstormed the types of rooms they would need in their dreamhouse, such as a reading room, math room, tech room, kitchen, bathroom and creativity room. The students worked in groups to create and design their dream room. They had to determine the length, width and area of their room. When all the rooms were complete, the class added all the areas together to calculate the total area of the house. Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations
Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and 2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and 23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.

Snakes play a significant role in the legend of St. Patrick, the primary patron saint of Ireland and the man who inspired a wildly popular mid-March holiday. Though the notion of St. Patrick bravely banishing snakes from Ireland certainly supports his worthiness to be the island’s patron saint, historians note this particular portion of the legend of St. Patrick is a myth. A 2012 report in National Geographic News noted that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes, as the most recent ice age made the island too cold for reptiles until the period ended 10,000 years ago. By that point, Ireland was surrounded by seas, which scientists and historians believe kept snakes from colonizing the island. Though the precise dates of St. Patrick’s life remain unknown, it’s likely he was an active missionary in Ireland during the fifth century, at which time natural history experts in Ireland attest there were no snakes on the Emerald Isle.
