Third Graders Find Inspiration In Artist’s Work

Mrs. Byrnes’ third graders at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District have been reading biographies about impactful Americans such as Katherine Johnson, Bessie Coleman and Albert Einstein.

Students also learned about Tyree Guyton, an African American artist from Detroit. From the book “Magic Trash: A Story of Tyree Guyton and His Art,” students learned that as a boy Guyton picked up junk and used it to create things. After returning home from art school as an adult, Guyton discovered that where he had grown up had become a decaying, unloved neighborhood. Through his “Heidelberg Street Project,” he used his art to transform his neighborhood into a living and changing outdoor art exhibit, visited by people

Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District held its first of two evening literacy nights for students and parents on Feb. 15. This year’s theme was STEM and Literacy. Students in kindergarten through second grade were invited to participate in

their classrooms.

To begin the evening, teachers read “After the Fall,” a story about Humpty Dumpty and how he created a plane. After discussing the book, students had the opportunity to design their own paper plane. The planes were attached to straws and launched in the

air, challenging students to see whose plane could travel the furthest. At the end of the event, students were gifted a STEM-related book and an additional plane to fly at home. The literacy night for students in grades three through five will take place in midMarch.

Fight For Charity Seeking Boxers For

2023 Main Event

Long Island Fight for Charity (LIFFC), the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2023 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 350 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer, volunteering their time to fundraise for local charities and get in shape to box in the annual main event.

The LIFFC 18th Annual Main Event will be on Monday, November 20, 2023 and will feature at least 10 bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization, benefiting local charities, endure physical training and participate in promotional activities and media interviews.

Since its inception, the event has raised over $1.75 million for local, Long Island-based charities. Applications are now being accepted for volunteer charity boxers

who will enter training to prepare them to step in the ring at the 18th Annual Main Event. Boxing experience is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. This is a rare opportunity for individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to truly “give back.” Since 2003, LIFFC has distributed funds each year to Long Island charities including: Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School, National Foundation for Human Potential (FREE) and many others.

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing. Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Yucca’s impact is among countless success stories. If you are looking to make a di erence, you can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.
