The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social

Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts. WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Parenting Programs: Various programs are offered to assist parents/guardians in raising children. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. YES CCC provides a ﬁnancial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork. Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island. Available to students in both Suffolk County and Nassau County. PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact

with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from ﬂoating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture

it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. Report it by contacting PSEG Long Island at 800490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue. The program is a practical approach and project base in which environmental education is incorporated into the Living Environment curriculum where it is connected to every unit. This unique program gets students involved and helps them take ownership of their learning in the classroom. They are fully responsible for monitoring the water quality, wellbeing of the trout and diagnosing issues that arise. Students work together to put together the tank and filter, brainstorm ways to fix problems that arise and monitor water quality throughout the time the trout are in the classroom. At the end of the program, a field trip is planned to release the trout in preapproved streams on Long Island. The projected streams are located in Babylon and Massapequa. Students will also engage in environmental activities

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School science students have a new element of learning added to their curriculum thanks to the Trout in the Classroom initiative. Trout in the Classroom is a hands-on program where students learn biological and ecological concepts through raising trout from eggs to fry and then learning about ecological and wildlife preservation by releasing them in the local watershed. Trout in the Classroom is a national organization that has been around for more than 30 years. “There is a visible presence in New York State, but more importantly Long Island as it ties into the freshwater environments we have here,” said science teacher Caroline Golio. “The program is collaborative between teachers, volunteers and local agencies – when we release the trout in the spring, we stock local creeks.”
