Long Island Fight for Charity, one of Long Island’s most popular and most unique charity fund raising and networking organizations, recently held a Boxer Appreciation and Charity Donation Presentation at SimPlay in Hauppauge to give check donations amounting to over $160,000 to representatives of several Long Island-based charities.

Long Island Fight for Charity Co-Founder and Chairman Jamie Austin presented the donation checks to board members of Long Island Community Chest, $60,000; the National Foundation for Human Potential, $20,000; Genesis School, $20,000; ROHHAD Fight Inc., $63,356 and Captain Kathy Mazza/Lodge 2163A, $2,210. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway.

Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us.

There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

Strolling Into Spring been mired in since the holiday season.

Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently sponsored a food drive in Amityville with the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to benefit Island Harvest.

The Presiding Officer was joined at the Amityville Stop and Shop on February 6th by Girl Scouts from across Suffolk County, who greeted shoppers and helped collect and organize donations. Over

460 pounds of food was collected, supplementing approximately 380 meals.

“It is heartwarming to see so many of our neighbors lending a hand and donating to those in need,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “I would like to thank the Amityville Stop and Shop for hosting this event and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County for lending us some very enthusiastic volunteers to help collect donations.”

Faculty Flaunts Red To show unity and support of the American Heart Association, faculty and staff members at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School wore

the color red on February 12th for the AHA’s Go Red for Women Campaign.

According to the AHA website, heart disease is the number one killer

of women, causing one in three deaths each year.

Through their collaborative efforts, more than $300 was raised for the organization.

Student Nominated The Amityville Union Free School District is pleased to congratulate Amityville Memorial High School student Shaneka Bernard on receiving a congressional nomination to the United States Military Academy.

To receive the nomination, Bernard followed the multistep

application process. First, she wrote a letter of request to Congressman Peter King for the nomination. Once her request was approved, she received an application from Congressman King along with three character reference forms to be completed. After submitting the application, character references and

her school grades, which the program required she hold at least a 95 weighted grade point average, she was selected to participate in an interview with a panel of five West Point alumni.

Bernard was one of two candidates selected to receive Congressman King’s congressional nomination for West Point.

Black History Month

Donate & Deliver As a way to give back to the community, members of the student council at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted a food drive with all donations benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

The school collected

more than 100 cans and various items from the nonprofit’s wish list, which included toiletry products, snacks and toys.

Under the advisement of Allyson Kretz, student council members participated in a field trip to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park

on February 23rd to drop off the items collected.

Students in the school’s newspaper club also took part in the field trip and wrote an article on their experience as well The Town of Babylon as the purpose of the Department of Human organization.

Services recently presented “Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memory” in celebration of Black History Month. The event honored several members of the community and featured a keynote address

by Suffolk County District Court Judge Derrick Robinson.
