In Loving Memory Of John G. Vogt

February 15, 2023, was a very sad day for the American Venice Civic Association. It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Vogt. John was the driving force of our Civic, and he was an Executive Board Member and President. John lost his fight with Cancer and leaves behind his wife Candida, daughter Nicole 29, son Robert 27, and daughter Emily 25. His passion for his community was second to none. He was a great leader who spent all of his time working on making his home community, The American Venice, a better place to live. John tried his best and fought long enough to see the beginnings of the improvements here in the Venice that he started. It hurts our Hearts that he did not get to see the

completion of the Living Shore Line in the West Venice, the raising of the roads, and also the reconstruction of the “Circle” in the Grande Canal.

John also volunteered his talents to the Copiague Kiwanis Club as a board member and as secretary, Boy Scout Troop 284 Copiague leader and he was a member of the Sunnyside

Chamber of Commerce - Business Improvement District.

John was a giving man, not only with his time but was known to help financially if a person was down on their luck. John was a gentleman, a true friend, a great team player and all around wonderful man that will be missed terribly.

There will be a memorial service held on February 28, 2023, 5 PM - 9 PM at the Massapequa Funeral Home, located at 4980 Merrick Road, Massapequa Park, NY 11762. The Vogt family request that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in John Vogt’s memory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Research, Boy Scout Troop 284, or The Copiague Kiwanis Club. Please bring your fondest memories of John to share.

Empty Bowls Fill Copiague Food Pantry

EMPTY BOWLS FILL COPIAGUE FOOD PANTRY - On Feb. 12, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School ceramics students held their first “Souper Bowl” event. Ceramics students in Mrs. Layden’s Ceramics 1 classes each made handmade bowls that were processed and glazed. The cafeteria staff donated three different soups to help with the efforts in raising money for the Eagle’s Nest food pantry to fill some empty bowls. in its 13th year, garnered more than 150 entries to tackle the issue of substance abuse. Students received a certificate and gift card sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

Twenty students from Copiague were chosen as winners. The district

congratulates the following students for their winning entries: Great Neck Road Elementary School: Jeremy Barrera, Devon Bennett, Ariana Desulme and Kimberly Morales; Deauville Gardens East Elementary School: Jameliah Cox,

Mason Marner and Mantis Tucciarone; Copiague Middle School: Julia Abayev, Kennedy Dudley, Ashley Fernandez Abreu, K’pryce Hamilton, Veronica Karwowska, Zoey Khisova and Cindy Once; Deauville Gardens West Elementary School:

Angelith Molina Martinez and Layla Tejada; and Susan E. Wiley Elementary School: Gabriella Agtuca, Yeleeni Manchame, Sophia Samuel and Barkley Seizeme.

This year’s annual essay contest focused on the concept of religious liberty.

Each student winner received a gift card and council certificate. From the Copiague Middle School, this year’s Knights of Columbus essay contest winners were: Christie Arce (first), Allison Garcia Antunez (second) and Zyann Sam-Kabba (third).

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.

Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.

Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.

Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.

A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Copiague Unveils New Fitness Center At High School

NEW FITNESS CENTER AT HIGH SCHOOL UNVEILED - Copiague athletic department recently unveiled its upgraded fitness center at Walter G. O’Connell High School. “We have made significant changes to our high school fitness center that will benefit the health and performance of our student-athletes for years to come,” said William Bennett, director of physical education and athletics. “Improving our athletic facilities has been a priority of ours, and this has been one very exciting step in that process.” The new state-of-the-art equipment will allow students to exercise in a safe and healthy environment.
