The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

Copiague School District’s students were recognized by members of the Knights of Columbus for their participation in the organization’s annual poster and essay contests at the Feb. 10 board of education meeting.

The poster contest, now in its 10th year, garnered 161 entries to tackle the issue of substance abuse. Students received a certificate and gift card sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The district congratulates the following students for their winning
