The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Copiague School District’s students were recognized by members of the Knights of Columbus for their participation in the organization’s annual poster and essay contests at the Feb. 10 board of education meeting. The poster contest, now in its 10th year, garnered 161 entries to tackle the issue of substance abuse. Students received a certificate and gift card sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The district congratulates the following students for their winning

Wiley Elementary School: Christie Arce, Shyla Brown and Alyson Vargas; Deauville Gardens East Elementary School: Brittany Carbajal Vargas, Juliana Heckman, Darlene Herrera and Eliana Rodriguez; Great Neck Road Elementary School: Kiana Fauntleroy, Leanny Soto and Maya Thompson; Copiague Middle School: Hadasa Argueta Botzoc, Shenn Barredo, Nina Bartoli, Eliud Bonilla, Yeritsa Caba Rodriguez,

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932.
