February is National Pet Dental Health Month clinical condition in cats and dogs even though it’s completely preventable.

Pet owners may believe the bad breath their pets exhibit is normal, but it could be an indication of poor

dental hygiene, which can go on to affect overall pet health.

Keeping dog’s and cat’s teeth clean and healthy should be a priority this month — and all year long.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, is looking to generous and animal loving Long Islanders to help it raise funds to feed its herd over this winter. The organization is looking to raise $6,000 to help cover the cost of hay bales.

Pal-O-Mine’s herd, which includes 22 horses, eats 10 bales of hay each day. Each bale weighs 50 lbs. and costs $10, making

Pal-O-Mine’s monthly hay bill $3,000. By helping the organization raise $6,000, this expense will be covered through March 31st.

Top 20 Celebration Goes Virtual Copiague School District recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its top 20 students in the Class of 2021 with virtual Top 20 celebration on Jan. 29. Board of Education members, central administrators and invited faculty members joined the top 20 students for the event.

Each top 20 student had the opportunity to choose one special teacher from the district who had a positive influence on them. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High

School Principal Joseph Agosta welcomed guests and students. Mr. Agosta then offered a brief biography of each student, noting their accomplishments, awards and future goals and endeavors for college and their career. Each student expressed their gratitude to the teacher who inspired them during their time in the Copiague School District.

Two Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School seniors – No. 4-ranked Anna Carvajal and No. 7-ranked Samantha Gonzalez – have been named QuestBridge Scholars.

QuestBridge’s National College Match is a college scholarship application process that helps outstanding high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to the nation’s most selective colleges. Carvajal has matched with Princeton University and Gonzalez with Haverford College.

Out of more than 18,500 applicants, QuestBridge selected 6,885 finalists to be considered for the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship. This year, QuestBridge’s 42 college partners matched with a record number of 1,464 finalists, who are recognized as Match Scholarship Recipients. The Match Scholarship is offered as part of a financial aid package provided by the college that covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and travel expenses.

Ranked fourth in her class, Carvajal has

a weighed GPA of 103.17. Academically, she has been named an AP Scholar with Distinction, has received awards in the Covantage and LISEF programs and is part of the National and Tri-M Music honor societies. Anna is an active member of the Key Club, One Mind Club, Treehuggerz Club and Global Ambassadors. She plans to study chemical and biological engineering at Princeton.

Gonzalez is also an AP Scholar with Distinction and boasts a GPA of 101.98. She has been part of the mentorship science program at Farmingdale State College and was one of 10 students accepted into the summer marine studies enrichment program run by BOCES. Samantha received a STEP stipend award and was chosen to attend the STEP conference in Albany last year. She is a member of the Student Council and has been part of the National and Tri-M Music honor societies, Key Club and Science Olympiad. Gonzalez plans to study chemistry at Haverford.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more.

Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

cancer treatment.

Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues.

Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s.

Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship!

Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each.
