A DAY TO REMEMBER - When the Sisters of St. Dominic decided to close the Queen of the Rosary Academy in 1986, they began exploring possibilities for the use of the property. Their deliberations resulted in a new senior housing ministry. Hence, the sound of youthful voices that filled the academy hallways became the mature voices that fill the halls of Dominican Village. QRA Alumnae recall their happy days and reunited at Dominican Village to reminisce at the all Class years reunion. Graduates from class years 1952 through 1988 attended. Pictured are graduates celebrating their fortieth, fiftieth and sixtieth High School reunion (Class of ’59,’69,’79). The ladies shared fond memories of the Sisters of St. Dominic and their teen age years.

Basketball Coach Receives National Women In Sports Honor

Copiague School District celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior varsity girls basketball coach Kia Wright at the team’s last home game on Jan. 29.

Wright was a standout athlete during her time in the Copiague School District, earning a spot as one of the top scorers on Long Island by amassing

2,148 points in her high school career. She was an All-Long Island and All-State player who helped the Eagles win two Long Island titles and a state championship in 2003.

Wright played at St. John’s University, where she was a four-time Big East player and the only player in school history to score more than 1,500 points and more than 400 assists in a career.

After graduating from St.

Johns, she competed at the professional ranks for Puerto Rico and Croatia, and in 2015 was inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Wright has been an assistant coach for the Adelphi Panthers and is currently in her third year as the junior varsity girls basketball head coach for Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

Delivering Smiles To Seniors Spreading some love, joy and smiles this Valentine’s Day, members of the Builders Club at Copiague Middle School visited with locals at Tanner Park Senior Center on Feb. 5. As part of a yearly tradition, now in its 17th year, the students spend

the morning with the senior citizens. The Builders Club, the junior version of the Key Club, is run by adviser Maria Ostrofsky.

Each senior citizen was hand-delivered a rose and a handmade card by a member of the Builder Club

to help brighten their day.

The students spent time getting to know the local members of the community.

There was plenty of time to play games, chat and even hit the dance floor to learn some new moves.

Valentines Traditions From Around The World Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday.

The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture.

Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

Many different traditions can be linked to Valentine’s Day. Here is a list of the interesting ways Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe.

South Korea In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14.

This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

Denmark and Norway These Scandinavian

countries didn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day until recently, but have now put their own spin on the traditions.

Men write funny poems or rhyming love notes called Gaekkebrev and send them to women anonymously. Women must try to guess their admirers by counting dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name.

Estonia In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is a day more devoted to friendship than romantic love. It is called “Sõbrapäev” in Estonian, which translates to “Friend’s Day.” Cards and gifts are exchanged among friends.

Wales In Wales, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated.

Rather, the Welsh commemorate St. Dwynwen’s Day, who is their patron saint of lovers on January 25.

It is customary to gift love-spoons, a tradition that likely stems from the practice of sailors carving intricately decorated spoons of wood and presenting them to women they were interested in courting or marrying.

France Considered to be one

of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches.

The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on.

Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them.

The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds.

Italy Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans.

One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called “Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. The action suggests the couple will be together forever.

Artists Earn Spots In Regional Exhibitions Six student artists from the Amityville Union Free School District were chosen to have their pieces displayed in a pair of prestigious Long Island art shows.

The Suffolk County Art Leaders Association’s AllCounty Art Exhibition will feature the work of four students from Edmund W. Miles Middle School and Amityville Memorial High School, including ninth grader Hasslyn Hurtado, 10th grader Neyri Ayala, 11th grader Kaya Branscum and 12th grader Ash Dixon.

Hasslyn’s piece “Christ-

mas Cupcakes” was created with oil pastels. Neyri completed a paper mosaic, “Amanecer,” and Kaya has her mixed media acrylic painting, “Melting Heat,” in the show. Ash entered a variety of untitled drawings, paintings and mixed media work into the senior scholarship portion of the competition.

A reception for the artists was held on Feb. 1 at Old Town Hall in Babylon.

Art Exhibition. Kaya and Crystal submitted mixed media using the technique of photo transfer. Ash’s “Shoe” and Katherine’s “Pop Shoe” pieces were made with acrylic paint.

The show runs from Feb. 15 to March 1 at the Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills, with a reception and awards presentation on the final day.

Students completed their work under the direction of art teachers Jayne Grasso, Nicole Pappas and Nicole Scoca.

Amityville Researchers Share Their Findings

Amityville Memorial High School sophomores are conducting meaningful research in the Advanced Placement Seminar course where they delve deep into topics of personal interest.

On Jan. 31, students presented their group reports in the auditorium,

the result of two months of hard work.

Students in Allison Reichel’s and Jodi Wilsher’s classes began the year learning fundamental research skills, such as how to find credible information, consider issues from multiple

perspectives, evaluate the strength of arguments and work as a part of a team.

Working in groups of three to five, students then picked research topics with each member responsible for a different component.

Yaneli Amaya, Keiry Martinez, Juan Morales

and Kemar Porche selected as their topic, “Wealthy Inequality.” Individually, each one looking at it from a different perspective: political, social and futuristic perspective.

They then brought their information together to create a group research report and digital presentation.

“It takes a lot of commitment and everyone doing their part,” Yaneli

said about what it takes to successfully complete a research project.

Other topics included “Public Perception of Cloning,” “The Impact of Music,” “Climate Change,” “Advertising to Children,” “Social Policies of Immigration” and “Educational Technology.”

With the conclusion of the group presentations, AP Seminar students will now begin individual research

projects.

Students who successfully complete AP Seminar can take AP Research, the second part of the AP Capstone program, which includes a full-year investigation of a self-chosen research question. Each student’s individual research project culminates with a 4,000- to 5,000-word paper and oral defense presentation.

Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!
