The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring.

Mentoring Partnership Expands Director, Mentor New York. “Mentor New York is very excited to now offer its free support and technical assistance to organizations and communities across the State, to assist in establishing and strengthening quality mentoring programs.”

Mentor New York will work closely with new target regions to help corporations, institutions, local associations, government agencies and other organizations from different sectors identify appropriate regional mentoring opportunities with established area mentoring partners. It will also work to deliver training programs to individuals through on-site workshops and webinars and expand its leadership to incorporate new representatives from other New York regions in all areas of

community life – schools, higher education, business, government, youth agencies, religious organizations and more.

“Studies show that youth involved in an effective mentoring program go on to graduate high school, form healthier, stronger relationships with parents, their teachers and peers, and experience an overall increase in their self-esteem,” continued Cohen. “It’s vital to engage and support those neighborhoods where we can make a difference in a youth’s life, and help eliminate chronic absenteeism – the number one cause of high school dropout occurrences.” According to the America’s Promise Alliance, more than 20% of high school students do not graduate on time and 5.8 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24, are neither

in school or employed.

by Mentor New York, will be held in March on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, and will include a day of discussion on high school dropout rates and what steps need to be taken to increase graduation rates for young people.

The America’s Promise Alliance was formed in 1997 and headed up by General & Mrs. Colin Powell, to help create successful conditions for all young people to succeed in school and life.

Established in 1992, The Mentoring Partnerships of New York and Long

Island, now Mentor New York (MNY), is an affiliate of MENTOR, Inc. MNY helps individuals and groups from different sectors become involved in mentoring opportunities for youth.

MNY is a catalyst, linking individuals, organizations, businesses and religious organizations to existing mentoring programs and the young people they serve and helping to create new programs where needed. Their no-cost services bring evidence-based research into communities to help young people achieve their best.

Currently working with over 400 programs that serve over 57,000 young people, their goal is to create and expand mentoring programs so that every child in New York State who needs or wants a mentor can have one.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, joined by New York State Assemblywoman JeanPierre, presented Boy Scout Troop 84 with a new American flag at the group’s meeting on Tuesday, December 22nd in Amityville.

Boy Scout Troop 84 has a long and prominent history in the Amityville community, with 46 members reaching the rank of Eagle Scout since 1949. Since the inception of the Eagle Scout award in 1912, only about 2

percent of eligible Scouts have earned this honor.

Scoutmaster Frank Smisek has led the troop for over 16 years.

Student Athletes Honored Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented proclamations to the Amityville Warriors Boys Varsity Soccer Team and to Tysheem Griffin of the Rolling Thunder Special Needs Program at the general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature held December 15th, 2015 in Hauppauge.

The Amityville Warriors defeated the Pearl River Pirates 2-0 on November 15th, to secure the school’s first New York State Class A State Championship. On the way to their state title, the boys also clinched the program’s first Long Island title and their first Suffolk County championship since 1980.

Watch Out For the Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?”

Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people, however, suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider also orphaned or troubled children, who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year.

Please don’t get me wrong. I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February.

So if you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you. But, also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Christmas joy to all year round. Because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!

1. Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched.

2. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed.

3. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways.

4. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item).

5. Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess.

6. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag.

7. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges.

8. Repair broken windows and shutters.

13. Unless you’re a skilled artist, scale down your personal art work (portraits, landscapes), posters, signs, and family photos, especially in teenagers’ rooms. Create a feeling of spaciousness.

14. Keep shades and draperies open, to admit as much light as possible, but screen out unappealing views.

15. Let your kitchen look warm and welcoming, not a hectic workplace. Keep your sink shining and free of dirty dishes at all times.
