Dr. Mary T. Kelly, superintendent of the Amityville Union Free School District, was recently presented with the William T. Lauder Award by the Amityville Historical Society at its autumn dinner. She was selected by the historical society’s board of directors, who recognized Dr. Kelly as a highlyrespected educator with numerous, outstanding accomplishments

during her tenure as superintendent. They cited her active participation in numerous Amityville organizations and her devotion to providing a quality education for all students. Dr. Kelly is an enthusiastic supporter of the historical society’s educational programs for the district’s youngsters. The William T. Lauder Award was established in honor of the thirdgeneration Amityville resident, World War II resident and village historian. The Lauder Museum, a community, cultural and educational institution in the village of Amityville, is named in his honor and features local history exhibits. Dr. Kelly was the sixth recipient of the award since its inception in 2018.

Dr. Kelly began her career as a social studies teacher in East Meadow. She came to Amityville as an assistant superintendent in 2008 and was named superintendent in 2014. “Dr. Kelly guides and inspires by her own example, shows her caring with a word of support and her understanding with a smile,” said Ellen Ricciuti, chairwoman of the historical society’s autumn dinner committee. “She embodies Bill Lauder’s leadership, commitment and wisdom, and is an extraordinary and excellent superintendent of the Amityville school system.” Photo courtesy of the Amityville Union Free School District

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges. What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier. Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much. These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness. I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to

LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions. If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay. Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you. If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?” “Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition. Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,

“Heart Attack” Noodles

The Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education celebrated academics, the arts and athletics at its December 12th meeting. To get everyone in the holiday spirit and preview the winter concerts and art shows, the meeting opened with performances by the high school chorus and jazz ensemble. Student musicians performed a medley of Christmas songs. The community celebrated the boys varsity soccer team, which captured the New York State Class A championship. Director of Athletics, Physical

Education and Health Evan Farkas presented certificates to coaches and players, and commended them for their hard work and dedication. Board members also approved several additions to the Amityville Memorial High School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School course catalogs. High school Principal Maria Andreotti discussed several new opportunities for students in the 2019-20 school year. Construction crews are in the process of pouring the foundation for the addition to Amityville Memorial High School, which will include a new gymnasium,

science labs, classrooms and expanded cafeteria. The roof replacement has been completed at the Park North administration building, and masonry work will begin there in January. A new ramp and stairway for the rear entrance will be constructed. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly shared that sixtytwo students were named scholar-athletes during the fall season. That means they each achieved at least a 90 average while also playing a sport. She said the number of students earning this honor continues to rise every year

Don’t let the name of this dish scare you, but we do recommend splurging on this one as a once in a while treat! For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown. As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion. “My mom made this dish for my family for as long as I can remember. She would prepare it for our neighborhood block parties, for Christenings, and on Christmas. This dish was always a big hit!” *Editor’s Note: Try serving with a side of sauteed greens for a balanced meal

What You Will Need:

1 Bag of Egg Noodles 1 Lb. of Fatty Bacon (you’ll need the fat for flavor) Fine Bread Crumbs - plain is best

Preparation:

Prepare Egg Noodles and set aside Cook bacon until crispy and set aside Pour warm bacon fat over egg noodles Crumble bacon and add to noodles Add in fine bread crumbs until all bacon fat is absorbed (you can eyeball it)

my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop. Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day. You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

Spreading Joy to Seniors With songs, crafts and games, students from Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District made the holidays a little brighter for seniors at Bristal Assisted Living. More than 40 children made the short trip down County Line Road on December 17th. Participants included firstgraders from Margaret Brooks’ class and secondgraders from Kerrin

Faulkner and Jenny Smith’s class. Ms. Brooks accompanied students on the guitar as they began their set with “If You’re Happy and You Know it” before moving on to a slate of popular Christmas tunes. During their hour stay, children and seniors did other activities together including playing bingo, balloon volleyball and gingerbread house crafts. Ms. Smith explained

that the second-grade social studies curriculum focuses on communities, so her class does several community service activities throughout the year. This is the third year they have visited the Bristal. “The students were so excited to come and spread some Christmas cheer to people right within their own community,” Ms. Smith said.

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is! This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Research Goes Digital Third-graders have been using technology to improve their research skills at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District through seasonal-based projects. Throughout December, students worked on Chromebooks to learn more about the many holidays celebrated during the month. They

used databases available through the district website, including Britannica School, to do their research and find basic information such as the meaning of each holiday and associated customs and traditions. “This gets them familiar with using modern technology and advances their technological skills,” librarian Adrienne

Hartung said. Principal Kathleen Hyland said that the school has also been adding more non-fiction books to the library. These informational texts, along with online articles and videos, show students that there are numerous types of reliable sources that support research.

Children Greeted the Grinch The Grinch may not be as revered by children as Santa Claus, but children at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District still celebrated the character who first appeared in a Dr. Seuss book and has been the subject of several popular

Christmas movies. Northeast hosted its first Grinch pajama day on December 14th. Pre-K and kindergarten students marched through the halls in their pajamas and Grinch hats before settling into the gymnasium. After singing a few Christmas songs, Santa arrived on a
