The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their

organization. Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District held a “record-breaking” literacy night on Oct. 2 for students in kindergarten through second grade. Themed after the “Guinness Book of World Records,” students and their parents rotated through different stations throughout the evening event. Each station started with an information session for parents to learn more about what is happening in the school. In the gymnasium, students watched a short video about the Guinness Book

of World Records hulahopping record. Afterward, they each tried out hulahooping while reciting the alphabet. In the cafeteria, parents were informed about the new Community Eligibility Program, which offers free breakfast and lunch to every student in the district. The students and parents then discussed some different recipes to try at home. Classroom stations included a lesson for parents on the Fundations Letters Keyword Sound Chart. The students then practiced reciting the chart while standing on one leg.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche.

That’s the world we live, so we have to adapt to it, and that’s why we are rolling out the Chromebooks.” Dr. Thomas DeNicola, the assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, said that Acer Chromebooks use the Google platform. With Google Classroom,

teachers can post assignments and students can submit their completed work digitally. There are many useful applications such as Google Docs for text documents, Google Sheets for spreadsheets and Google Slides for interactive presentations. Teachers have received training on how to incorporate this technology into their lessons, and will continue to receive professional development throughout the year. Dr. DeNicola said he is particularly excited about the increased collaboration among students, or between students and their teachers, provided by the Chromebooks.

Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes is some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date.

Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at any time.

Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near.

Eighth, ninth and 10th graders new to the district also were able to pick up their devices, which are available for use both in school and at home. Students and parents sat through a short presentation about the benefits of the 1:1 technology program, as well as computer care, student responsibility and digital citizenship. Each student then left with a Chromebook, a charger and a set of earbuds. Amityville Memorial High School Principal Edward Plaia said that gone are the days of teachers writing notes

String Musician Adds Another Accolade Amityville Memorial High School junior Alex Diaz continues to add to his list of musical achievements. Alex will represent the district in the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Symphonic Orchestra, for which he will play the viola. As a fifth grader, Alex began learning the violin, then added the viola to his repertoire in eighth grade. He plays the violin for the school orchestra, holding a leadership position as the

ensemble’s concertmaster, and plays viola with the chamber orchestra. His musical talents have also been shared on stage, as he has performed in two musicals at Edmund W. Miles Middle School and two at the high school, including starring as the title role in last year’s production of “Shrek.” Last year, Alex earned selection to the Long Island String Festival Association’s secondary school orchestra and the Suffolk County Music

Educators Association’s All-County musical festival. He will now add All-State musician to his credentials. This past spring, thousands of students from across New York State, including Alex, auditioned for NYSSMA ensembles. The selection process was highly competitive and based upon evaluation scores and comments from the spring 2019 NYSSMA assessment, along with teacher recommendations. The Symphonic Orchestra

will rehearse and perform at the All-State festival in Rochester from Dec. 5-8. Outside of school, Alex plays viola for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and spends his Saturdays honing his music skills at Mannes Prep in New York City. This past summer, he participated in a six-week music camp through Kinhaven Music School in Vermont. “I’m extremely proud of Alex and I look forward to all of the music that he’s going to continue to produce,” said his orchestra teacher, Bianca Ferrante. “He is a leader in our music program and sets an example for other students.”

Big Progress In School Projects It was a productive summer in the Amityville Union Free School District, as several construction projects wrapped up and others progressed greatly from the $69.9 million bond approved by voters in March 2016. The board of education received its monthly update from representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction at the Sept. 11 meeting. Masonry repair work concluded at the Park North Administration Building with the installation of a new concrete ramp and stairs at the back entrance. Handicapped accessibility was greatly improved at Northwest and Northeast elementary schools with the installation of a new ramp and stairs at each front entrance, and new ADA-compliant bathrooms in the nurses’ offices. Bathrooms were also added in several classrooms at Northeast. The window installation

project at Edmund W. Miles Middle School also was finished this summer. Significant progress was made on the new addition to Amityville Memorial High School, which will include classrooms, science laboratories, indoor athletic complex and expanded cafeteria. The block walls around the outside of the building have been installed and work had begun on the exterior brick walls. Plumbing, electrical and mechanical work continues. Upgrades to the existing building include a new faculty lounge, expanded and renovated library and new ceiling and lighting system in the kitchen and serving area. A large section of the west parking lot was also repaved. Principals from the five schools presented their reports from year three of the district’s strategic plan, “Putting Amityville on the Map.” Northeast Elementary School Principal Dr. Pauline

Collins highlighted the strong educational program for pre-K and kindergarten students and spoke of the literacy celebrations that are held monthly. At Northwest Elementary School, Principal Kathleen Hyland noted new ways of engaging students in their learning using instructional technology. Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School Principal Robyn Santiago cited increasing ELA scores at all levels, the creation of a STREAM lab to provide more handson learning experiences and character education programs. Earl Mitchell, principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, said the launch of the 1:1 Chromebook initiative last year, which gave each student a take-home device, has increased the excitement for learning. He noted the success of students in math and science, where all students are accelerated and taking high school

credit-bearing courses in eighth grade. “If you raise the bar, students will rise to the occasion,” he said. High school Principal Edward Plaia noted that more students continue to enroll in college-level Advanced Placement

courses. He explained the school’s philosophy in having students take these challenging and rigorous courses is one of encouragement. The meeting also included a presentation from Dr. John Coverdale, the president of the

Center for Workplace Solutions, on the district’s Diversity and Inclusiveness Advisory Council. He announced the committee’s charge, and noted that members include administrators, board members, teachers, parents and local leaders.

Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
