Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar Named Aurrel Bhatia, a senior at Bethpage High School, has been recognized as a Regeneron Science Talent Search 2022 Scholar. The prestigious honor is also a landmark for the school, as Bhatia is the second Bethpage student to achieve this recognition since the inception of the school’s science research program in 2011. “It was just incredibly exciting when I found out,” Bhatia said. “To be second person in this district is especially meaningful, because I think it carries signs of progress and I think it’s a great step towards the right direction in our district.” According to its website, the Regeneron STS (formerly the Intel STS) is a program of the Society for Science and the Public that recognizes and empowers the most promising young scientists in the U.S. who are creating the ideas and solutions to solve the most urgent challenges. This program is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious precollege science competition for high school students. Each of the 300 scholars received a $2,000 award from Regeneron with a matching donation to his or her school. Scholars were selected from 1,805 applications received from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and eight other countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists and hail

from 185 American and international high schools and homeschools in 37 states, China, Switzerland and Singapore. Bhatia said she spent most of her freshman and sophomore years studying machinelearning and deep-learning algorithms and applied them to study climate. Through her research, she discovered that there are roughly 850 million people worldwide who suffer from food insecurity. She realized that while there is enough food for everyone in the world, she believes that the systems in place are not productive enough. Bhatia felt that current irrigation systems are inaccurate, so she sought to create a soil moisture prediction system and implement that into a decision support system. Bhatia submitted her project, “Utilizing a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Machine Learning Algorithm to Create Soil Moisture Prediction Models and Improve Water Productivity in Southern California.” “I figured if there’s an automated way that we can determine how much soil moisture is in the ground at a particular moment in time, we can see how much water needs to be applied to meet the irrigation field goals,” Bhatia said. “Ultimately, we could create crops that don’t waste excess water.” Bhatia was selected for an internship at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory last year. As one of the lab’s “Partners for the Future,” Bhatia is conducting sleep research through

computational neuroscience at Cold Spring Harbor’s Engel Lab. She is also a member of her school’s Math Olympiads Team, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the Ethics Debate Team, the marching, concert and jazz bands, the chamber orchestra and the Philosophy Club, among other groups. Bhatia credited Chris Pollatos, the district’s science director, for believing in her. “In addition to students’ research, Regeneron is looking for the type of person who works hard, perseveres and someone who is a good role model in their community,” Pollatos said. “Aurrel definitely checks all of those boxes. We have a great district and a great group of students who inspire students to reach their dreams.” Additionally, Bhatia was a student at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, in which she took part in the Brookhaven National Labs Gifted Math Program, conducted in collaboration with the Museum of Mathematics. She is also a senior mathematics editor for the Young Scientists Journal, where she managed a team of junior editors, assigned articles, facilitated communication between editorial team and upper-level management, and determined scientific accuracy of articles. “She’s just an incredible young woman who is so talented, and she doesn’t know her full potential,” said Bhatia’s science research teacher, Nicole Dulaney. “I’ve learned so

much from her myself and I know that other students learn a lot from her as well. I just can’t wait to see all the wonderful things she’s going to do after high school.” Bhatia said she plans to study applied mathematics in college.

Dish Up A Classic Comfort Food This St. Patrick’s Day Everyone has “corned beef and cabbage” on the brain come St. Patrick’s Day. But another flavorful dish might appeal to a greater number of people with Irish roots. Shepherd’s Pie is a savory dish made of minced lamb that originated in England but also made the jump to Ireland, where it became a popular comfort food. While Shepherd’s Pie can be made with freshly cooked ground meat, it also is a fine way to use leftovers from a previous meal. Shepherd’s Pie is commonly mistaken for Cottage Pie, which is very similar, yet tends to use beef as the meat of choice. Many families have their own ancestral recipes for Shepherd’s Pie, but for those looking to cook the dish for the first time, try “Shepherd’s Pie,” courtesy of Alton Brown, which appeared in Season 12 of his hit show “Good Eats.”

pounds russet potatoes tablespoons canola oil cup chopped onion carrots, peeled and finely diced cloves garlic, minced pounds ground lamb teaspoons kosher salt teaspoon freshly ground black pepper teaspoons tomato paste teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary teaspoon chopped fresh thyme teaspoon Worcestershire sauce cup half-and-half tablespoons unsalted butter large egg yolk cup corn kernels, fresh or frozen cup English peas, fresh or frozen

Directions 1. Heat oven to 400 F. 2. Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1⁄2-inch dice. Put them in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Set said pan over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Uncover, drop the heat to maintain a simmer, and cook until tender, 10 to 15 minutes. 3. Heat the oil in an 11-inch saute pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the onion and carrots and saute just until they begin to take on color, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and stir to combine. Add the meat, salt and pepper, and cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 3 minutes. 4. Sprinkle the meat with the flour, toss to coat, and continue to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, and thyme and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat to low, cover, and simmer slowly until the sauce is thickened slightly, 10 to 12 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, combine the half-and-half and butter in a microwave-safe container and nuke until warmed through, about 35 seconds. 6. Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Mash the potatoes (a masher is an excellent tool for this, though a hand mixer will do), then add the hot half-and-half mixture, as well as the salt and pepper. Mash to smoothness, then stir in the egg yolk. 7. Add the corn and peas to the meat mixture and spread evenly in a 7-by-11-inch glass baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling over, and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. On Tuesday, February 22nd the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Installation Dinner at the Campagne House in Bethpage. Among the evening events was the recognition of the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of 2021’ to Thomas Catapano with citations from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County Legislators Rose Walker and Laura Schaeffer, and Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board, represented by Jim McCaffery, Deputy Commissioner of Planning and Development. Many Bethpage residents have enjoyed the beautiful flowers and plantings adorning Broadway and at the ‘point’ near Bethpage High School every spring and summer. These flowers and plants, along with the lighted Holiday plantings every year in our downtown, are due in large part to the hard work of volunteers like Thomas Catapano, who grew up in Bethpage and worked at the family owned Catapano Nursery from the time he was a child, until the nursery was sold in 2004. Thomas enjoys landscaping, and has continued to work utilizing his expertise in this field for AHRC's landscaping division for the past 16 plus years. We want to thank Thomas for all he does to help beautify the community of Bethpage! Irish Songs To Enhance St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations Music can enliven any event and often sets the tone for boisterous festivities. From dinner parties to weddings, music plays an integral role in many momentous occasions. Music also is front and center during St. Patrick’s Day parties and other celebrations. Imparting traditional music as well as modern Irish songs into St. Patrick’s Day fanfare can kick parties up another notch. Poet Patrick Kavanagh wrote the lyrics, purportedly inspired by his brief connection with doctor Hilda Moriarity. • “The Rocky Road to Dublin”: A tale of the adventures and troubles of a man traveling to Liverpool from his home in Ireland, this is a popular Irish song among tourists. • “The Wild Rover”: This tune tells of a wayward son spending money on beer and whiskey but promising to return home to change his wild ways. likely will impact how many visit this year. As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national

pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well. Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks. It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if

gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. A regular seisiún can occur every Saturday evening and also on St. Patrick’s Day. • Reach out via social media to Irish musicians and encourage them to attend sessions at your business. • Quiet crowds when musicians decide to perform impromptu, even when gatherings fall outside of regularly scheduled seisiún. • Keep songbooks

available for patrons who want to join in. While many musicians or novice singers may be familiar with certain tunes, they may not know them all. Having lyrics and music available helps include many others in the fun. • Share news of seisiún at other pubs and establishments and they may do the same for yours. This way music lovers can enjoy music many nights of the week. A great seisiún makes people happy and fills their minds and hearts with wonderful music for some time. This is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.

Bethpage High School seniors Suchitha Channapatna and Ruthitha Channapatna were named as candidates in the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Twin sisters, Bethpage’s two scholars are among the 5,000 students nationwide to receive this invitation. Candidacy for this program is based on either their outstanding performance on the ACT Assessment or the College Board SAT, nomination

by their Chief State School Officer or one of the program’s partner recognition organizations. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order of the president to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.

In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. The district congratulates both students on being named as candidates in the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Louie The NYPD Dog Visits Charles Campagne Elementary School Third graders at Charles Campagne Elementary School in Bethpage learned all about service dogs as Louie the NYPD Dog visited students recently. Louie’s partner, NYPD Detective Tim Brady, spoke to students about Louie and his daily duties with the NYPD’s Bomb Squad. Louie, who is known as an Explosive Detection Canine, is a 3-year-old Labrador

retriever trained to conduct searches for a variety of explosive materials. He is one of 16 dogs who works with the city’s Bomb Squad. Prior to meeting Louie and Detective Brady, students read the story, “Aero and Officer Mike: Police Partners,” by Joan Plummer Russell. The story, which shares the special bond of Corporal Mike Matsik and his K-9 partner,

Aero, taught students some of the basics of service dogs. After students learned about Louie and his responsibilities, Louie demonstrated his skills as he searched for an item in the All Purpose Room. Louie now lives with Detective Brady and his wife, Michelle Brady, a third grade teacher at Charles Campagne.
