Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker thanked the visitors of the Syosset and Plainview-Old Bethpage Libraries for supporting a food drive his office held in honor of the legacy of legendary Long Island musician, activist and philanthropist Harry Chapin. Donors contributed nearly 150 pounds of food to Long Island Cares - the food bank that Harry Chapin founded in 1980.

The food drive is part of Legislator Drucker’s continuing efforts to generate awareness and support for the ongoing fight to end hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. In April, Legislator Drucker filed legislation to make July 16 Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County; months later, the County Executive applied this concept toward proclaiming the first Friday in September each year as “Harry Chapin National Food Bank Day.”

“When Harry Chapin launched Long Island’s very first food bank more than four decades ago, he elevated our regional response to the humanitarian crisis of hunger - one that touches countless families in our region,” Legislator Drucker said. “As we strive toward eradicating food insecurity in Nassau County, I hope that we will continue to call upon Harry’s example as both a guiding light and an inspiration for all that we do to accomplish our shared mission.”

Plainview Water District Reminds Residents And Commercial Customers About Required Backflow Device Testing

Residents And Commercial Properties Must Test Their Backflow Devices Annually, Deadline For Test Compliance Submission Is December 31, 2022

The Plainview Water District (PWD) would like to remind PlainviewOld Bethpage residents and commercial customers that the New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) and Nassau County Health Department require annual testing of backflow devices. This compliance testing must be performed by a certified backflow tester and completed prior to December 31, 2022 to ensure these devices are functioning properly.

“It is crucial to verify that a backflow device is functioning properly to ensure that potentially harmful contaminants

are kept out of the POB community’s water system,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Backflow devices keep harmful chemicals like fertilizers, weed killers, and other lawn products from finding their way into the water distribution system water mains should a low-pressure event occur.”

Backflow devices are mechanical doublecheck valves that prevent water flow from reversing away from a building in the event of a loss of water pressure. A loss in pressure can occur when a fire is being put out or there is a

water main break. These devices must be tested annually to make certain they are installed and functioning properly. Residents are required to have a backflow device if they have any of the following: inground sprinklers, fire lines, swimming pools, or a private well that is interconnected with the public water supply.

“Practicing prevention is a key component of keeping yourself and your neighbors throughout the POB community safe, as it is impossible to predict when and where an emergency resulting in a drop of pressure

may occur,” said Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Testing backflow devices is part of these necessary precautionary and preventative efforts for all customers in our District. If a backflow device is not properly installed, chemicals and other pollutants can potentially and unknowingly infiltrate the community’s water.”

The District encourages all residents and businesses to arrange for a NYSDOH certified backflow tester to conduct their annual backflow test to avoid any potential penalties for noncompliance. The Plainview Water District

keeps an up-to-date list of New York State licensed backflow testers on its website, www. plainviewwater.org/ resources/backflow/. The District also maintains its own dedicated Cross-Connection Control Department to help residents with compliance questions that can be reached at 516-931-6469.

“We encourage residents to make this annual backflow testing a priority within their households, as it is such an important aspect of helping us Preserve Plainview,” said PWD Commissioner Amanda Field “We ask that any

POB resident that may have any questions or concerns regarding backflow testing to please reach out to the District, so we can assist you in this important process.”

If you have questions or seek additional information, please call the District at 516-931-6469 or email info@plainviewwater. org. Residents are also encouraged to sign up to receive information by submitting their email address through the District’s homepage or following them on Facebook in order to stay up-to-date with District activities and initiatives.

Options For Community Living Receives Support From Bethpage Federal Credit Union

Nonprofit organizations are an integral force on Long Island, improving the quality of life for adults and children in our communities.

Partnerships take this impact one step further. Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options), a Long Island based notfor-profit human services organization, and Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU), enjoy a partnership designed to strengthen the Long Island community through volunteerism, in-kind donations, board support, and grant funding.

Partnership projects are designed to bridge the missions of both organizations.

As a major supporter of Long Island-based community programs for children, Bethpage Federal Credit Union donated 65 backpacks to families in Options programs. Each backpack was filled with

supplies for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“Every child deserves to start the school year with confidence”, said Robert Suarez, AVP of Community Development. “Starting the school year off with the appropriate supplies sets students up for success, empowers them, and fuels a love of learning.”

Additional support in the form of grant funding was awarded to Options through the Bethpage Cares Charitable Giving Program.

A $15,000 grant award provides vital financial support for Options housing program for formerly homeless Long Islanders with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Last year, this program provided safe, stable, supportive housing for 200 adults and children.

“Our partnership with Bethpage Federal Credit Union is invaluable,” said

Yolanda Robano-Gross, CEO, Options for Community Living, Inc. “Their commitment to enriching the lives of Long Islanders is evident in everything they do. We could not be more grateful for their ongoing support.”

About Options for Community Living, Inc. New

New faculty members received a warm welcome into the Bethpage Union Free School District during the district’s annual new teacher orientation on Aug. 24. The day allowed them to get acclimated to the district before the first day of school on Sept. 1.

Orientation kicked off in the Bethpage High School courtyard where new teachers enjoyed breakfast and were introduced to Superintendent of Schools David Schneider, Board President James McGlynn, central administrators and directors. They each welcomed the new staff and shared their position in the district, along with their background.

Mr. Schneider encouraged the new teachers to seek support from administrators and directors throughout the school year and reinforced the importance of working as a team.

During the day, the new faculty members participated in meetings and got acquainted with their individual schools. The orientation provided a smooth transition into the Bethpage Union Free School District.

Students and families from throughout the Bethpage Union Free School District gathered for an evening of fun during the Bethpage PTA Council’s annual Back-toSchool Bash on Sept. 16. Held outside under the lights of Bethpage High School’s athletic complex, PTAs from the different schools were stationed at tents where they sold Bethpage apparel and other fun items.

Attendees also enjoyed delicious food from different food trucks. The event was a great way to kick off the Bethpage Union Free School District’s 2022-2023 school year.

Bethpage High School Student-Musician Recognized By NYSSMA

Junior Ryan O’Connell from Bethpage High School in the Bethpage Union Free School District was recently selected as an alternate for the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Winter Conference. He plays the bass clarinet and was chosen as an alternate for AllState’s symphonic band. This year’s conference will take place at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester from Dec. 1-4.

To earn a spot at AllState, students must be recommended by their teacher. They also had to prepare a NYSSMA level VI solo last spring which was evaluated by a NYSSMA Certified All-State adjudicator. To be recognized as an All-State participant or alternate is a great honor as only the top studentmusicians are selected. As an alternate, O’Connell can still be accepted to participate in All-State prior to December. The district congratulates him on this great achievement.

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary vehicles.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary this coming Veterans Day by participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that story and we are asking tanker veterans to come

forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum.

“You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American

tankers changed their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our veterans who crewed the Sherman so there is a first-hand perspective on our nation’s heritage.”

Sherman veterans are invited to reach out to the museum through its web site,www. museumofamericanarmor. com or call 516 454-TANK (8265). The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration is open Friday-Sunday 11 am to 3pm... 1303 Round Swamp Rd, Old Bethpage, NY 11804.

Bethpage High School’s Varsity Kickline Team Hosts Golden Girl For A Day

Eighty-seven Bethpage students from grades K-8 put themselves in the shoes of Bethpage High School’s varsity kickline team, golden girls, on Aug. 19. The team hosted a special one-day summer clinic, golden girl for a day, in the Bethpage High School gymnasium to connect with young, aspiring kickline members and to help raise money for their trip to nationals this upcoming school year.

For $35, each student that attended received a golden girl T-shirt and lunch.

Throughout the morning, the students were split into groups based on their grade level and worked directly with the Golden Girls. They learned the team’s warmup, some favorite dance styles and had fun practicing a short routine.

“I love getting to show them how we function as a team and I hope they learn what being a Golden Girl really is like,” said Julia Nartowicz, Bethpage High School varsity kickline co-captain. “We want them to have fun and have the best day.”

At the end of the clinic, the students showcased their skills with a spirited performance for loved ones. It was a great experience for both the young students and the Golden Girls who enjoyed sharing their passion for kickline. Photos courtesy of the Bethpage Union Free School District
