Love Story for
Middle and high school students in the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Extended School Year program whipped up tasty treats and connected with the community this summer through the ESY Eats program. ESY Eats is a student-run business that launched last summer to help promote student vocational skills. This summer, the program kicked off on July 5 and ran through Aug. 12 at Bethpage High School. Each week, students involved in the program shop, prepare and sell delicious baked goods and drinks to Bethpage administrators and staff, along with community members. With the support of Ryan Catterson, coordinator for vocational experiences and founder of ESY Eats, along with special education staff members, the students prepare a new menu each week which usually follows a creative theme such as Christmas in July, zoo animals or carnival. The menu theme typically correlates with an upcoming field trip that the students attend at the end of the week. ESY Eats runs like a full business. Community members are encouraged to fill out a digital order form through Google every week. Once the students receive their orders, they head to the grocery store to collect the supplies they need. They prepare by baking the treats and fulfilling the drink orders. Once Thursday rolls around, the students station themselves outside of Bethpage High School at a large, decorated table and distribute the online orders to customers. Community members are also welcome to stop by if they want to purchase food orIndrinks.addition, ESY Eats has a mobile cart which the students utilize to deliver orders to administrators and staff inside Bethpage High School and the district administration building. Through these deliveries and sales, the students strengthen their social and math skills as they converse with customers and distribute the correct change. The program encourages ESY students to reach their full potential by building business and life skills. From creating a menu on large posterboards, to successfully packaging orders, students involved in ESY Eats are practicing skills that align to their own individual goals and having fun doing it.

Bethpage’s ESY Year Eats Makes Summer Sweet
“The inspiration behind ESY Eats came from a desire to create authentic vocational experiences for our students in the ESY program,” Mr. Catterson said. “In addition to the already outstanding academic piece, I wished to create a program in which students could learn real-world skills in a safe, nurturing learning environment.”AsidefromMr. Catterson and special education staff members, the students received a helping hand from Bethpage High School seniors and alumni who were interested in pursuing a future career in education. By working closely with the students in ESY Eats, these individuals gained valuable experience for the Throughoutfuture. the summer, the ESY students collected the money that they received from their successful sales and placed it into the Explorations Club account. Explorations Club is a club at Bethpage High School aimed at giving special education students opportunities through vocational experiences. Golden Eagles Summer Academy was facilitated by program advisers Allison Robb and Erica Indenbaum, who helped ensure that the two-weeks ran safely and smoothly for all the students and staff involved. “We’re so excited the Golden Eagles Academy could provide a variety of activities for our students again this summer,” said Robb. “Children were given access to unique and meaningful opportunities while building relationships with their peers and Bethpage staff members.”
Summer fun continued for more than 250 Bethpage students who enrolled in the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Golden Eagles Summer Academy. This summer marked the second year of the program and the first year with high school students. It was held at Central Boulevard Elementary School and ran from Aug. 1-12. All Bethpage students entering grades K-12 were invited to join the 2022 summer academy for free and partake in interactive learning and enrichment opportunities.Attheelementary level, students participated in fun literacy, math, music and fitness activities each day. As a result, the incoming first through fifth graders enhanced their knowledge as they prepared to enter the new school year. Middle and high school students were also invited to enroll in the Golden Eagles Summer Academy and pick from a variety of course options that best fit their interests. Each course ran for a week, so secondary students could select two. TWINS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recently honored Bethpage High School’s 2022 Valedictorian Suchitha Channapatna, and Salutatorian Ruchitha Channapatna, fraternal twins who graduated with grade point averages of 110.9 and 110.5 respectively.
“While some siblings find themselves competing with one another, these two sisters have been each other’s support system throughout their entire lives,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Suchitha and Ruchitha are a tremendous source of pride for their family, community and all of us in the Town of Oyster Bay. We wish them continued success as they go on to help build an even brighter future together.” Suchitha and Ruchitha were integral members of the Bethpage High School Regal Eagles Robotics Team, and played the flute. Both twins will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall; Suchitha plans on studying mechanical or aerospace engineering, and Ruchitha plans on studying biomedical engineering.

The PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District Board of Education has appointed Kerry Farrell as principal of Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School. She was promoted from her role as assistant principal of POB Middle School, which she had held for the past five years.“My parents always held education in high regard and instilled the importance of education in my sisters and me,” Ms. Farrell said. “I had wonderful teachers growing up and always knew I would be a teacher one day. There is nothing better than being a role model to students and seeing that lightbulb moment in their eyes when you teach them something new.” Ms. Farrell received her bachelor’s in education administration from LIU Post and her master’s in education from Queens College. She began her career in education as an elementary school teacher at PS/IS 266 in Bellerose, Queens. There, she began her transition to administrative roles by becoming a literacy coach, helping her colleagues on how to best meet goals in the classroom. From there, she moved on to become assistant principal at the school. “My experience as a literacy coach honed my skills at building relationships with teachers and sharing best practices,” Ms. Farrell said. “The trusting relationships I built made the transition to assistant principal easier.” From PS/IS 266, Ms. Farrell came to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District as assistant principal of POB Middle School, where she would need to make new connections with staff, students and families alike.“My first goal was to build those relationships with the teachers and community,” she recounted. “The trusting relationships create a positive environment for students. The students are always at the forefront of myAtefforts.”POBMiddle School, Ms. Farrell said she was and continues to be struck by the commitment that staff, families and administrators have shown toward the children’s wellbeing.

Plainview-Old Bethpage School District Hires New Assistant Superintendent For Business
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District has hired Dr. Christopher Dillon as its new Assistant Superintendent for Business. He takes on the role from Richard Cunningham, who retired this spring. “Dr. Dillon comes to our District with impressive credentials and a proven track record of putting students first,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary O’Meara said. “I know he will continue the hard work of responsible budgeting that is mindful of taxpayer concerns while providing the bestpossible education for ourDr.students.”Dillon got his start in education as Assistant Superintendent of Administration for the Plainedge School District. Later, he served as Assistant Superintendent of Business for Valley Stream District 30 and, most recently, the Levittown School District, where he oversaw an operating budget of $240 million for 7,300 students and more than 300 employees across 11 school buildings. As Assistant Superintendent for Business, Dr. Dillon is responsible for the daily operations of the District, including managing finances, investments, security, transportation, facilities, insurance, food service, purchasing and athletics. Before entering the education field, Dr. Dillon worked in the private sector, first in the equipment operations department for the PepsiCo company, and then with the Kohler Company as an Account Manager.“Icome from a family of educators,” Dr. Dillon said. “My mother was a teacher, recently retired, and my father is the superintendent for Nassau BOCES. What drew me back to education was being able to do what’s best for the children. Since then. I haven’t looked back, and I enjoy every second. Bethpage Summer Enrichment Program Combines Learning, Fun
DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES - Musical theater students performed their show “Dancing Through the Decades” during Bethpage’s elementary summer enrichment program.
More than 500 students entering grades K-7 participated in the Bethpage Union Free School District and Nassau BOCES’ elementary summer enrichment program from July 5-28. Housed at Central Boulevard Elementary School, the program consisted of meaningful academic and enrichment courses based on grade level. Each day was split into two sessions so students could enroll in two different courses if theyLedwished.by New York State certified teachers, students strengthened their knowledge in core subject areas through courses such as Wordplay, Math Fun and Math Challenges. The summer program also contained specific preparation skills classes for English language learners and students entering kindergarten through seventh grade. For those interested in science and technology, the summer was all about exploration and discovery. Students utilized their critical thinking skills in hands-on courses which included Engineering Shark Tank, KidOYO for Kids, Science Discoveries, STEM and Science Wonders.Bethpage students also developed their creativity through the summer enrichment program’s Arts and Crafts, Art in Nature, Music Fun, Set Design, String and Bead Art and Musical Theater courses. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was the first summer since 2019 that those enrolled in Music Fun and Musical Theater were able to perform. Musical Theater students showcased their talents and closed out the 2022 program with an entertaining and highenergy show, “Dancing Through the Decades.” Incoming first and second graders enrolled in Music Fun also performed an entertaining show on the final day of the summer enrichment program. In addition, some students stayed active through a physical education class and others learned a new language through Spanish is Fun and Italian is Fun. These language courses allowed Bethpage students to learn something new through conversation, song and play. Throughout the program, Bethpage High School students assisted various classes and enjoyed playing a role in making it a memorable month for the young students.
