For some reason, drama classes have become competitive, sometimes overwhelming.

Large groups of musical theatre productions are more concerned about bringing

in big audiences to make money instead of focusing on the individual and their needs. Enticing hyperfocused parents whose goal is to have their child on stage right away before being ready. Adult Actors are in a rush to go on an audition before they know the pitfalls of a complicated business or parents who may fall for a scam just to make their child be the next greatest star. Only to be disappointed.

There is an overwhelming amount of these places on Long Island that promise such things and there are many choices and opportunities to be on the stage or on front of the camera.

But not every adult or child is ready or feels comfortable being thrown into a large environment filled with unrealistic promises.

Bethpage’s Groom Graduates U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Matthew Kevin Groom of Bethpage recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, NY. Groom earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U. S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license in the U.S. flag merchant marine, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine.

The Academy is one of five U.S. federal service academies. It educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers to serve the nation during peace and war. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their Congressman or Senator.

Groom was nominated by Congressman Tom Suozzi.

All USMMA graduates incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine – manned exclusively by American mariners – is essential for securing the country’s commerce in peacetime and delivering warfighters, weapons, and military supplies in times of conflict. The majority of “Kings Pointers” serve for eight years as Navy reservists in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program while working aboard U.S. flag vessels; others will serve on active duty in our nation’s armed forces.

By virtue of their elite training and real-world experience, graduates are ready to go on day one in service of American military strength and economic power. As part of his four year education, Groom spent one year training as a cadet aboard ocean going vessels.

POBJFKHS Class of 2022 Celebrates Graduation Commencement Ceremony The graduating seniors School marked the end on June 26 as the class of Plainview-Old Bethpage of one journey, and the of 2022 celebrated their John F. Kennedy High beginning of another commencement ceremony.

Speakers reflected on the last four years, and gave advice for the many more to come before the young adults took the last steps of their high school careers and received their diplomas.

Salutatorian Justine Choi advised her peers to not lose sight of the smaller tasks in front of them, lest they become overwhelmed by the bigger picture.

“Wherever we end up after high school, whether its college, trade school, a gap year, the military or a job, it’s important to keep in mind the significance of taking small steps,” she said. “Because change is the result of many cumulative actions, and because in the long run it will enable us to reach our most important goals.”

Valedictorian Olivia Schmidt noted the importance of loved ones and those closest to you in achieving one’s goals.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary O’Meara asked the graduating students to be open to change, should the need arise. “Where you are in any one given moment does not have to determine where you will be in the future,” she said. “There will be many times in your lives where you will be faced with questions such as ‘is this really where I want to be?’ or “Is this really the person I want to be?’ When contemplative

questions come your way, make time to contemplate.

Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) recently partnered with the Nassau County Police Department and Nassau County’s Department of Traffic Safety to perform free car seat safety checks at the PlainviewOld Bethpage Library.

Throughout the day, certified technicians inspected vehicles to ensure that the car

seats within were installed properly and providing children with the maximum level of protection. The Nassau County Police Explorers were also on hand to assist with the event.

“As Nassau families take to the open road in greater numbers than ever this summer, it’s more important than ever to ensure that we protect our most precious

cargo - our children,” Legislator Drucker said. “I thank the Nassau County Police Department, the Department of Traffic Safety, the Nassau Police Explorers and the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library for partnering with my office to provide this important resource to our residents.”

Recognitions Come After Years Of Hard Work

Twenty-one PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District educators, administrators and support staff received tenure on June 6. The achievement marked a major milestone in their careers and were a recognition of the years of hard work and dedication.

“We pride ourselves on being an example for our students and putting forth the best versions of ourselves in our schools,” said Plainview-Old Bethpage Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary O’Meara.

“Day-in and day-out, these teachers, administrators

and staff have exemplified this philosophy by proving that no matter the obstacle, nothing is impossible.

This recognition is well deserved.”

Among their higher ups who recommended the staff members for tenure, many noted that most had only

just started their careers in education when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Samantha Kauhuaus of the Bethpage UFSD, a student in the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Horse Science and Management program, earned first and second place at the Future Farmers of America Horse Show, held at the North Shore Equestrian Center, located on Long Island University’s (LIU) C.W. Post Campus. She took first in the Two ft. Jump Course and second for Walk/Trot/Canter.

COMPETITION INVOLVES ITALIAN POETRY READERS - Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Junior Paula Andrade has won first place in the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) Long Island Chapter Italian Poetry Contest.

Paula won the contest with her recitation of the poem Il Colore de Mestieri (The Color of Professions) by the famed children’s author, Gianna Rodari. Each year, Italian language students at POBJFKHS take part in the AATI competition, which requires them to memorize an Italian poem by heart and perform it in front of a judging committee.
