Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

By: Jon Taylor Winter arrived a bit early this year with two snowfalls already in the books, and some below normal temperatures! Still, our village holiday spirit cannot be chilled. Thankfully, the weather held off for the Old Fashioned Village Christmas event. Once again, the Chamber of Commerce staged a fabulous event. The holiday carousel, the big screen holiday classics and the entertainment were a big hit with the throngs of families that turned out to celebrate and shop. I always look forward to holiday selections performed by the Brass Ensemble from West Islip High School. These students are just great and their performances up and

down the street add so much to the great spirit of the event. Of course Mr. and Mrs. Claus were the crowning stars of the event, arriving on the beautiful horse drawn carriage to the cheers and the great big smiles of kids young and old. Special thanks to our village officials, the code officers, and Skip and the gang from our highway department, whose hours of effort make it happen. A heartfelt thank you to all the businesses and residents who participated in the wonderful Giving Tree, sponsored by our village Chamber of Commerce. The program provides gifts for families and individuals less fortunate than many of us. These are never extravagant

wishes, but they do make someone’s holiday a time of joy, and warm their hearts knowing that somebody cares enough to give. A special holiday hug to the folks at Healthy Alternatives and Ooh-La-La for coordinating the program. If you have not yet seen the incredible model train display at the Babylon History Museum, treat your family to a visit! This year’s display boasts three railroad lines and a trolley, plus three running streets with over 150 buildings and structures. Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Individuals from AHRC Suffolk’s Day Habilitation programs and the Suffolk County Parks Department formed a unique partnership to help breathe life back into the Meadowedge Greenhouse Cooperative located on the West Sayville Golf Course. loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances (10K, 5K and 1 mile), by

riding hand and foot cycles. Many participants honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course.

Students enrolled in both Foreign Language and English as A New Language courses throughout the Babylon School District continue to make bountiful strides toward mastering new languages, due to the help of engaging activities and robust instruction from district staff. At Babylon JuniorSenior High School, ENL students and their parents were invited to attend a presentation on the district’s new ENL program. Throughout the workshop, presenters Rebecca Cifelli, BHS guidance counselor, and ENL teachers Elizabeth Barry and Kyle Cropsey provided parents with information regarding graduation requirements,

grading, testing and an introduction to school personnel who work directly with their children. Additionally, to showcase one aspect of the program, the students took what they learned about the Thanksgiving holiday and gave a presentation to the attendees, explaining its origin and traditions. For these students, this curricular project served as their first introduction to the American holiday and the customs many families follow when celebrating the day. Sixth-grade students from Babylon Memorial Grade School in Melody Wubbenhorst’s World Languages program showcased their skills in the French language by identifying school-related

items such as books, pens and calculators. Throughout the course of the World Languages program, the students take French during the first semester, and study Spanish during the second semester. “As they progress in the World Languages Program at the grade school, students work on foundation skills and grow comfortable with the language pronunciation along with cultural connections,” said Babylon School District Director of World Languages Michelle Scharff. “The students work in thematic units of study with a strong emphasis on communication skills and have fun doing so.”

Dinner and a Show The Babylon JuniorSenior High School Leo Club recently hosted their annual Senior Citizen Dinner and a Show event, inviting senior citizens within the community to enjoy a tasty three-course meal followed by the Theater Club’s production of “Almost, Maine,” which ran the weekend of Dec. 9. Upon entering the school’s cafeteria, the attendees were warmly welcomed by members of the Leo Club, along with advisers Lisa Brush and Mike Birnbaum, as they took their seats and prepared to enjoy a
