The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life.

This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.

EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.

Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their specific needs.

Sherri Flournoy, Program Director at New Path Treatment Center stated, “In recognizing that recovery

is possible and is a life-long journey, we can help to reduce the stigma of substance use and mental health disorders.

Our role at New Path is to assist individuals to achieve and maintain their recovery goals. Our services follow a recovery model whereby participants are encouraged to develop their intrinsic motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices.”

Experiential Gifts

Shopping is foremost on the minds of many people come the holiday season. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making holiday shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. However, experiential gifts also merit consideration. Experiential gifts are those that focus

on experiences rather than items. These can include anything from a horseback riding adventure to a spa day to concert tickets to getting behind the wheel of a race car. Experiential gifts can be tailored to people’s interests. A study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed people tend to realize greater well-being from life experiences and

consider them to be a better way to spend their money. Overall satisfaction tends to be greater with gifted experiences than with material things. Furthermore, the Harris Group found that 72 percent of millennials actually want to spend more money on experiences rather than things.

Babylon Soccer Teams Are Suffolk County Champs

Babylon’s boys and girls varsity soccer teams have been named Suffolk County champions for the fall 2022 season. This great accomplishment came after a season of hard work and success for the Panthers.

The varsity girls team made it to the championship game with an overall record of 8-8 for the season, ultimately prevailing against Center Moriches 2-1 for the title. “Our goalie Ava Hanson was outstanding, and our

leading goal scorer, Ashley Bell, scored an amazing 20 goals,” said Coach Olivia Stenger. “As a new coach in the program, I knew right away there was a lot of talent on this team. I knew our season was going to be a bit challenging, but our goal as a team was to get to the county championship and beat Center Moriches.”

This was the third straight season in which the boys varsity team earned the county title, coming through with an overall record of 16-3. The

team overcame great odds: the preseason coaches’ poll predicted the Panthers would only finish 4th place in the league. “A huge part of our success was the emergence of our younger players,” said Coach Dennis McGovern. “We also had the experience of our senior group, which has compiled a 43-8 record over the last three years and winning a Long Island Championship last year as well.”

Babylon Town Hall 2022 Holiday Drive-Thru Experience!

Santa Claus, Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman as they recently welcomed the community to Babylon Town Hall for the 2022 Holiday Drive-Thru Experience!

Now in its third year, the Holiday Drive-Thru Experience continues to be one the Parks Departments most popular events, welcoming hundreds of participants who came out

to see the lights and displays and mail their letters to the North Pole. The event also collected hundreds of nonperishable food items that will benefit the Town Food Pantry this holiday season.

If you missed the Holiday Drive-Thru Experience, the displays at Town Hall will be open to the public all season long. The lights come on every evening at dusk, and we invite you

and your family to walk around the grounds at Town Hall and take photos with all of the different holiday scenes. We wish you a wonderful holiday season!

U.S. Postal Service Issues New Hanukkah Forever Stamp

With the release of this vibrant new stamp, the U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of issuing stamps for the Hanukkah celebrations.

This joyous Jewish holiday commemorates the liberation and reconsecration of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together to rejoice.

A dedication ceremony for the stamp was held recently at Temple Emanu El.

“I remember looking forward to Hanukkah as a child, especially the traditional foods, gifts, and games,” said Lori Dym, U.S. Postal Service managing counsel for procurement and property law, who served as the dedicating official. “And now, on behalf of the 655,000 men and women of the United States Postal Service, I am honored to participate in the unveiling of our new stamp celebrating this joyous Jewish holiday.”

Dym was joined by Susan Krantz, president of Temple Emanu El; Rabbi Matt Cohen; Jeanette Kuvin Oren, the stamp’s designer and artist; Kathy Mulcahy, mayor of Orange Village, OH; and Darcy Hershey, congregant and administrative assistant at Temple Emanu El.

“Temple Emanu El is honored that the United States Postal Service approached our congregation to host the

first-day-of-issue ceremony for the launch of the 2022 Chanukah Stamp,” said Krantz. “We are proud that in selecting Temple Emanu El, the USPS recognized our long-standing passion for social justice which is deeply embedded in our traditions. Our congregants care about the world around us and engage in the ongoing work of helping to improve the world in which we live. Our temple is a Jewish institution of connection, gathering, learning and practicing spiritual life. Working together we bring meaning to our lives and to the lives of others.”

“The miracle of Hanukkah came early this year (kind of)!” said Cohen. “While our Hanukkah menorahs are not yet kindled, this communal celebration reminds us that despite all odds, throughout time and history, the lights of the Jewish people have miraculously continued to grow brightly and illuminate the world with wholeness, blessing, and peace. Our Temple Emanu El family is honored to host this event and to welcome our friends from the Greater Cleveland Community into our sacred home.”

Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew.

The story of Hanukkah begins with the victory of the Maccabees, an army of Jewish fighters, over the forces of Hellenic emperor Antiochus IV, whose supporters had desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem by building an altar to the Greek god Zeus.

After reclaiming the Temple and preparing to rededicate the holy space, the worshippers discovered that only one small jar of consecrated oil remained — enough to last one day. Rather than wait for more oil to arrive, they lit the Temple menorah, which miraculously burned for eight days.

The miracle of the oil is celebrated with the ceremonial lighting of the hanukkiah, the ninebranch candelabra used only at Hanukkah. The hanukkiah, also called menorah, holds eight candles, one for each night of Hanukkah, plus one known as the “shamash,” which means the servant

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.

“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.

The candle for the first night is put on the farright side of the menorah. On each subsequent night, an additional candle is placed to the immediate left of the previous night’s candle. The candles are lit from left to right, so that the lighting begins with the newest candle.

A family-centered holiday, Hanukkah celebrations usually take

place in people’s homes, with games, songs, gifts and feasting. Traditional fried foods include latkes — potato pancakes — and doughnuts called sufganiyot.

Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, a date that falls in late November or December. In 2022, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Dec. 18.

Stamp Artwork

The stamp art features the design from an original wall-hanging. The fiber art was hand-dyed, appliquéd and quilted to form an abstract image of a hanukkiah.

The blue and purple colors are used to represent the sky, the greens and browns represent the earth. The bright yellows and oranges represent the Festival of Lights, as Hanukkah is also known. Along the bottom

of the stamp, the words Hanukkah, Forever and USA appear in white capital letters.

Jeanette Kuvin Oren was the stamp designer and artist. Ethel Kessler was the art director.

The Hanukkah Forever stamp is sold in panes of 20. Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

Holiday Model Train Exhibit At Old Town Hall

For the first time in two years, the Town of Babylon History Museum is proud to present the annual Holiday Model Train Exhibit at Old Town Hall, 47 W. Main Street in Babylon Village. Each December, the History Museum, and the Babylon

Town Historical Society feature an interactive model train display (240 sq. ft) that highlights historic points of interest from the Town of Babylon.

As we celebrate our 150th anniversary this year, we invite you to bring your kids to Old Town Hall

to see the model train display, which will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until January 1, 2023, from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. (CLOSED Christmas Day).

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water, so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.

WEST BABYLON STUDENT WINS LOCAL POSTER CONTEST

- West Babylon Junior High School seventh grader Reese Walsh was selected as a winner of the “Littering is Trashy” poster contest, sponsored by the Town of Babylon. On Nov. 29, Walsh was recognized at a ceremony at Town Hall. Her poster was chosen earlier this year to be printed out and made into a sign that was placed around the Town of Babylon. The sign is located at the Chelsea Avenue and Claremont Avenue intersection of Little East Neck Road, in front of the municipal parking lot and West Babylon sign. KiDS NEED MoRE Announces 8th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS Elf Ride

Kids Need More, Long Island’s premier 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of children coping with cancer and life threatening illnesses, is proud to announce their 8th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS Elf Ride taking place Sunday, December 18th, 2022.

For the eighth year in a row, KiDS NEED MoRE’s HoLiDAY CHEER BUS ELF RiDE’s buses stocked with toy-delivering elves will drive directly to homes all over Long Island to make wishes come true for over 1,000 children coping with cancer and serious illness.

“We started this event knowing that all parents feel the pressure to make the season magical for their children, but when families are stressed with medical visits, painful treatments, and financial burdens, taking part in holiday festivities can be overwhelming, notes Melissa Firmes, President, KiDS NEED MoRE. “We wanted to make the experience not only wonderful for the children, but also as a gift to the entire family, and a way for everyone to enjoy the holiday together.”

KiDS NEED MoRE will have a fleet of over 40 buses with over 20 volunteer elves on each vehicle delivering holiday

wishes for kids coping with life-threatening illnesses and their siblings this year, in the hopes that parents and caregivers do not have to pay anything for the holidays. Many of the volunteers are survivors or bereaved family members themselves. One bus will also be delivering to New Jersey families on Saturday, December 10th, 2022.

The rest of the fleet will be delivering all across Long Island, NYC, and one bus in CT Sunday, 12/18 beginning at 9:30 AM and going into the evening until all the gifts have been delivered. The Holiday Cheer Bus Elf Ride always takes place the Sunday before Christmas each year.

There will be free food, drinks and music at The

American Legion Post 1120 in Lindenhurst, NY all families and volunteers who would like to join in the celebration.

How to Help

KiDS NEED MoRE is recruiting community partners for this year’s event to sponsor buses and collect toys, volunteers to bring joy and merriment, and seeking referrals of local families to gift. From bus sponsorship to becoming an Elf yourself, there is something for everyone. Below are details from KiDS NEED MoRe on all the ways to participate this year:

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences,

and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for

NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.
