At a recent meeting of the Babylon Town Board, Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, and the entire board gathered to recognize and proclaim a day in honor of a North Babylon veteran who recently returned home from a tour of duty in the Middle East.

Matt Humpf, 21, of North Babylon, enlisted in the United States Army upon graduating high school. He took his oath in December of 2017, and left for basic training in July of 2018. He was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina before being deployed to the Middle East for Operation Inherent Resolve. He spent five months in the Middle East before coming back home and then being redeployed to Kabul, Afghanistan for Operation Freedom Sentinel. Humpf returned home to the United States on September 17, 2021 and

Santa Claus, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and a group of elves helped welcome the 2021 holiday season to Babylon as they recently joined Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello at the holiday drive-thru experience at Town Hall.

Suffolk County Legislators Jason Richberg and Kevin McCaffrey were also joined in on the festivities.

Each year, the Town of Babylon Department of Public Works’ Building and Grounds division decorates the front of Town Hall with an array of holiday lights, including the large tree next to the main entrance. Last year, the Department of Parks and Recreation transformed the annual lighting ceremony into a holiday

Babylon Ushers In Holiday Season With Drive-Thru Experience At Town Hall drive-thru experience for the community to enjoy.

The event was so popular in 2020 that it returned for not one, but three nights in 2021. In addition to the lights, staff from the Department of Parks & Recreation created several different festive holiday scenes including Santa’s Workshop and a Reindeer Barn.

Hundreds of community members came out to enjoy night one of the drive-thru experience and drop their letters off in the mailbox to the North Pole. Members of the community also generously donated hundreds of non-perishable items that will benefit the town food pantry.

The Drive-Thru Experience will remain at Town Hall throughout the month of December.

In 2020, Blue Point Brewing launched the aptly coined ‘Toast Your Hero’ campaign as a way to thank frontline workers and hometown heroes at the start of the pandemic.

Babylon Gives Thanks To Wyandanch Supermarket For Contributions To The Community

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Terence McSweeney and Receiver of Taxes Jennifer Montiglio recently gathered with Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg at the Wyandanch Senior Nutrition Center to recognize and give thanks to Compare Foods of Wyandanch for their contributions to our community.

The Wyandanch Senior Nutrition Center, under the leadership of Chief Head

Cook Brenda McDonald, provides close to 500 meals a day to all four of Babylon’s senior center’s as well as the Rainbow Center in the Village of Lindenhurst. Over the years and throughout the pandemic, Compare Foods has become essential to the nutrition center’s operations as they generously donate additional food whenever needed.

“Compare Foods is a staple of the Wyandanch community, and I thank

them for all they do for not only their patrons, but also for the Town of Babylon. They are a great asset to Brenda and her staff always, but especially earlier this year when we were still providing meals to seniors at home during the pandemic,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“Whenever I call, whatever I need, they are always here to help me feed our seniors,” added Chief Head Cook Brenda McDonald.

Online Grief Support Workshop Series Pinelawn Memorial Park, in collaboration with COPE Foundation, offers a free, monthly online grief support workshop series to help families on their journey of grief after a loved one has passed.

tribute to their loved ones.

Participants can use found objects such as wooden spoons, dowels, or any other “drum stick like” objects they can find and play on buckets, shoe boxes, trash bins, or any other object that makes some substantial noise.

Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to significantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:

Upon completion of the course, you will be more confident in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. Your business, organization, daycare, etc. will be deemed Autism friendly.

Student Takes Second In Veterans Awareness Contest The North Babylon Union Free School District would like to congratulate Robert Moses Middle School sixth grader Ryan Zayer for taking second place in the Town of Babylon Veterans’ Awareness Week Essay

Contest.

The New York State Assembly passed a resolution in 2004 to set aside the week before Veterans Day as Veterans’ Awareness Week in the state. This annual event

honors veterans and recognizes students from the community for their essay submissions about veterans that inspire them.

The district applauds Ryan for his efforts in honoring local veterans.
