But tires are one area of maintenance that often goes unchecked, even by the most diligent automobile owners. Tires undergo a lot of wear and tear, which only highlights the importance of proper tire maintenance. But many drivers do not give tires a passing thought until there is a problem, such as a ﬂat or excessive wear. Also, some drivers think that all tires are the same, failing to realize that the kind of tires vehicles need depends on various factors. In addition to the size and type of vehicle, drivers should consider the type of driving they do and the driving conditions they routinely encounter before choosing tires for

their vehicles. Many vehicles come off the lot with all-season passenger tires because these tires are among the most versatile. November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

Advocates for Change On Tuesday, October 18th, Thomas A. Lupo, from the Suffolk County Comptroller’s Office, spoke to attendees at the second annual Community Legislative Committee meeting, about Fiscal Management. Monthly meetings are scheduled at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bixhorn Technical Center in Bellport through May 2017.

This was the second in a series of meetings for those interested in learning about issues impacting school districts, BOCES, and how to advocate for positive change. Mr. Lupo informed BOCES employees, parents, students, and community members about the workings of the Suffolk County Comptroller’s Office and how it is

charged with auditing county departments and nonprofit agencies funded by the county. The Community Legislative Committee meetings are facilitated by ESBOCES Board Vice President William K. Miller. He said, “It’s inspiring to see adults and students interested in working together to benefit our community.”

North Babylon High School students Jennifer Parlow and Joseph Cuomo earned the prestigious Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award for 2016. The Suffolk Zone is part

On Wednesday, October 19th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey presented two proclamations to honor Walter H. Levins and The Mike Greene Great Guy Foundation at the Babylon Village Youth Project 2016 Fundraiser. Walter H. Levins is a long-time Babylon Village resident who has dedicated much of his life to helping others, particularly when Superstorm Sandy devastated the area. While his own businesses was hurt from the storm, Levins helped form Babylon Helps, and in conjunction with the American Legion on Grove place, the local village government and the Mayor’s office and an amazing group of volunteers, helped others in need. The group provided hot meals, supplies, money, labor and help to those that needed it. “Walter is an example of the type of upstanding, dedicated individuals we have here in the 14th Legislative District,” said

Legislator McCaffrey, “The fact that he made helping others a top priority while his livelihood was in jeopardy during Sandy is a testament to the character he has and is why I was proud to honor him at this important event.” The Mike Greene Great Guy Foundation was founded in 2007 by friends of Michael J. Greene in his memory. The purpose of the Foundation is to raise funds and donate those funds to help families and individuals in need in Babylon Village and its surrounding communities. Greene was an active community member who gave his life as a volunteer who was committed to serving and protecting his community. “The Mike Greene Great Guy Foundation is a meaningful effort to carry on the name and legacy of a man who dedicated his life to saving lives and was killed in the line of duty as a fireman,” said Legislator McCaffrey. “I am proud to have presented a

proclamation to the people who work to carry out his legacy in the community.” The event was hosted to benefit of the kids of the Babylon Village Youth Project. A large Chinese Auction was featured with a variety of items from Babylon Village to showcase local talent and products and to help raise money. Donations during this event make possible a wide range of activities, including a tutoring program for grade and high school students, travel to historic sites, visits to museums, computer classes, art classes, movie nights and boat safety courses, among others, “I would like to thank Director Eric Price and his team at the Babylon Village Youth Project for hosting another great event for the Village and members of the community,” said Legislator McCaffrey. “I am always ready and willing to support initiatives that provide services and opportunities to our youth.”

Night of Recognitions The October 17th Babylon Board of Education Business Meeting was full of recognitions for both staff and students. The night began with the recognition of the current Babylon Junior-Senior High School students who were named Advanced Placement Scholars. These students were commended for their academic dedication and presented with commemorative certificates. AP Scholar awards are bestowed upon students by the College Board based on the number of AP exams taken and the

scores they received on the tests. Babylon Junior-Senior High School football coach Rick Punzone was celebrated for recently being named a New York Jets High School Coach of the Week by Chase. Under his leadership, the team has won five Long Island and 12 Suffolk County championships, all within the past 20 years. The team recently defeated the Center Moriches Red Devils at homecoming with a final score of 42-6. To finish up the evening’s recognitions, the board of

education members were recognized for their selfless volunteer work toward the community and numerous hours given to ensure that students are getting the best education possible. The representatives were given many tokens of appreciation throughout the night, but perhaps the most memorable was Babylon Memorial Grade School’s gift of red superhero capes and a presentation portraying various members of the Babylon school community as superheroes.

The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police Officer training program is available to residents of Suffolk County at least 21 years of age. Festivities Shine A rainy day didn’t dampen the spirit of the West Babylon community as West Babylon School District celebrated its homecoming on October 22nd. Amazing Academics The North Babylon Academic Team, led by captain Haggai Anglade, Matthew Pecoraro, Noah Rothstein, and Richard Joyce, has achieved an impressive winning streak and is now nationally ranked. In September, the team placed third at the Smithtown West Invitational Tournament. On October 15th, it finished second at the Yale University Fall

Academic Tournament, and on October 29th, the team topped both of those achievements by placing first at the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights Invitational Tournament. This is the second year in a row North Babylon took first place at Rutgers. Anglade also distinguished himself once again by having the third highest points scored by an individual player at the Rutgers tournament.

This team has qualified for the HSNCT Nationals and PACE Nationals three times, and its next tournament will be a History Bowl at Seton Hall in New Jersey, where it will aim to qualify for the History Bowl Nationals. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer was recently on hand in Babylon Village to recognize the 2016 Nathaniel Conklin Award for Volunteerism winner, Dr. Christopher Proto. Dr. Proto, who owns a dental practice in the Village, has been an active member of the local community for many

Scholarships Available Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In 2017, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horiculture on Long Island by helping to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field.
