The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction.
This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”
What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.
Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

Due to their vast efforts in showing care for the environment, four Babylon Junior-Senior High School students who are enrolled in the school’s STEAM program secured the firstplace title at the high school level in EmPower Solar’s semiannual Student Solar Competition. Under the guidance of STEAM teacher Mary-Beth Schappert, students Haylie Kelly, Jenna Petraitis, Alessandra Van Rossem and Iqra Yousef, otherwise known as “Beach Bums Solar Power” for the competition, completed a series of math problems to determine how much energy and money could be saved by using solar power in personal homes, small

The students went on to create a mock news video in which they described how using solar energy could directly impact the local wildlife and environment, in and around the Babylon community. Due to their efforts, the four future engineers were presented with a $2,000 check toward scholarship funds, courtesy of representatives of EmPower Solar. The students were extended an opportunity to intern with engineers at EmPower Solar. EmPower Solar, a Long Island-based solar energy company, challenges New York State elementary,
middle and high school students to participate in a multi-faceted competition that encompasses STEM and creative components on a semi-annual basis. The Babylon students competed alongside sixtyfour teams from schools across both Long Island and New York City, and boasted ten total teams of its own.

North Babylon Homecoming Although the weekend rain canceled the North Babylon School District’s 2018 homecoming parade, the Robert Moses Middle
School was alive with energy as the high school’s varsity football team reigned as champions of its homecoming game, with a
32-6 victory over the Deer Park Falcons. While the varsity cheerleading team kept the packed bleachers pumped
up throughout the game, the high school’s marching band, flag team and kickline team entertained the crowd during the game’s
halftime show. In addition, queen. high school seniors Frank Concrete Toney and Adriana Harris Concrete was invented were crowned the 2018 homecoming king and by the Ancient Romans.
Students Scare Off Drugs North Babylon School District’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School grades K-5 students, staff and PTA members teamed up on October 19th to create scarecrows as a way to send a message about saying no to drugs. This event honored Red Ribbon Week, which is an annual campaign that raises awareness to prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and violence.
With 20 classes participating in the event, students marched outside the building and were put into groups, where they took handfuls of hay and eagerly stuffed the dressings of different scarecrow heroes and characters. This included characters such as Peter Pan, Mr. Incredible from Disney’s “The Incredibles,” Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen,” The Tin Man from “The Wizard of Oz,” a North Babylon football
player, and other creative scarecrow versions. After students were done stuffing and decorating their scarecrow, they strapped them to the fence along the building, as a way to ward off drugs. DeLuca Principal Vincent Fantauzzi said that the premise is that these newly scarecrow transformed heroes and characters will help students be brave when taking a stand against drugs.
