Addressing students’ social-emotional needs is an area that was top of mind as the West Babylon School District reopened its doors in September. The district created an SEL committee that began working during the summer on a variety of topics. “The social emotional committee was formed to address the needs of our students and to integrate student engagement, mental health and students/staff social responsibilities as part of classroom instruction,” said director of guidance Gina Curcio. Committee members were from central administration, guidance, building administrators and faculty. A subcommittee was also formed to create the framework to support teachers and students. “We targeted transitioning students, such as incoming kindergartners, sixth and ninth graders,” Curcio said. “Additionally, we created

a tier 1 intervention for all students in a teacher framework that consisted of SEL lesson plans that were age appropriate for all students K-12. Every teacher was trained on the framework, including warning signs, and how to report anything alarming. They were also given a tool kit with a variety of resources for all of their students.” Reorientation was a focus, so students and staff could get reacclimated. The SEL committee focused on making students feeling safe and understanding

what was going on around them. “Learning how to be academically successful is crucial to their success but they also need to learn how to deal with stress and what school expects from them,” she said. Teachers were trained to provide students with strategies to selfregulate and implementing structures that motivate them to learn. The SEL committee created a teacher framework for the first two weeks of school. “The first two weeks were crucial to engaging and fostering

social emotional wellbeing as well as administering academic assessments to obtain baseline data on how to develop the whole child,” Curcio said. The lesson plans were narrowed down into different themes: community, regulation, stress, resilience and empathy. The framework for these lessons was then broken up into different tiers, depending on if students needed further intervention from members of the district’s mental health team. Throughout the district’s schools, psychologists, social workers and counselors have been working on creating virtual interventions of their program. Sessions with students have been held via Google Meet or in person with safety precautions being followed. The first priority for counselors was scheduling students, and providing interventions for any concerns, Curcio added.

How To Prepare For A Unique Election Day

The Babylon Beautification Society is accepting volunteers for their annual Holiday Lamppost Decorating, which takes place on Sunday, November 29, 2020. Decorating will take place from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00p.m The event takes place, rain or shine. All materials are provided, just bring a ladder. Most volunteers decorate between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Note: it takes approximately 30 minutes to decorate one lamppost Each year over 1,000 volunteers decorate the

lampposts throughout Babylon Village and within a few hours, the village is transformed into a holiday wonderland. In the past, they have fully funded the event, however, this year all of the fundraising events were canceled due to COVID-19. To offset expenses, there will be a nonrefundable cost of $20, per lamppost to decorate. The Babylon Beautification Society provides all of the decorations (tree roping, lights, red bows) and volunteers are required to

provide their own ladder and holiday spirit. You must sign-up in advance - Even if you participated last year. According to Vote.org, some states, including Colorado and Connecticut, allow eligible voters to register on Election Day and cast their ballots that very same day, but many states, such as Alaska, Hawaii and Louisiana, require voters to be registered 30 days prior to Election Day. Many voters may not vote via mail-in ballots on a typical Election Day, but 2020 is not a typical year. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. notes that all states offer some form of mailin ballots. Many states are asking voters to vote via mail-in ballots in 2020 in an effort to reduce voters’ risk of getting and spreading the COVID-19 virus. Confirm the mail-in ballot policy and procedure in your state as early as possible to make sure your vote is counted.

• Return your completed mail-in ballot as soon as possible. Many states are urging voters who plan to vote using mail-in ballots to return their ballots as early as possible. In a mailer sent to all registered voters, the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections in New Jersey noted it is critical that voters return their mailin ballots early in the upcoming election season. Mail-in ballots can be returned via the United States Postal Service (all ballots include postage paid return envelopes), and voters also may be able to return their ballots in person at their designated polling locations or by placing the ballots in secure ballot drop boxes. Confirm your mail-in ballot return options with your local County Clerk of Elections well before Election Day. Election Day 2020 will be unique. Voters should not hesitate to take all necessary steps in advance of November 3 to ensure their votes are counted this fall.

confronting this pandemic on a daily basis and we want to make sure they are protected and safe while helping others.” Commissioner Jordan accepted the generous donation, which will be distributed to firefighters and police officers throughout the county. The effort reflects BDG’s ongoing efforts to assist essential personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Babylon Dancer Joins Faculty At Long Island High School For The Arts Stephanie Colesanti of North Babylon, a nationally acclaimed dancer and distinguished educator, is now a member of the Dance Department faculty at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Among her top priorities is instilling in her students the selfreliance and personal drive that will empower them to gain admission to the college of their choice and pursue their dream jobs. “As special and as talented as you are, there is always someone waiting to take your place,” is Ms. Colesanti’s tough-love advice for her students. “The only way to set yourself apart is to be the most reliable, hardworking and determined

individual you can possibly be. If you are not reliable, you are not hirable.” This invaluable wisdom was hard won. A professional ballroom dancer, Ms. Colesanti has faced her fair share of stiff competition. She has earned a number of championship titles, including first place in the Theater Arts Division of the American Star Ball Championship. She was ranked first in the nation in the U.S. Rising Star American Rhythm Championship, and named a national finalist for mambo in the United States Dance Championships. Some of her students have gone on to great success as well, earning invitations to the

Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) tour opener, and placing first in the DWTS Pro/Am Competition. In addition to competing in dance, Ms. Colesanti has served as a national judge for the United States Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and the National Dance Council of America (NDCA), as well as a licensed invigilator for the NDCA. This inherent understanding of her industry has underscored how important it is to be a lifelong learner. She walks the walk she talks, continuing to take classes and to train seven days a week. “Never stop learning and growing,” Ms. Colesanti tells her students. “Listen to those who have already

done it and learn how to do it yourself. And never give up. When you fall, find out why, analyze and learn from your mistakes, have a good cry, then get back up and get back to work.” Ms. Colesanti is a selfmade success story. She is the founder of the Ballroom and Latin Dance Program at the Archimedes Academy for Math and Science in the New York City school system. This diverse, multicultural program serves students of all backgrounds and abilities, including those who are physically challenged. She is also the owner of Dance With Us studio in Syosset, where she not only teaches dance technique, but

also mentors, advises and promotes confidence in aspiring dancers of all ages. “If you don’t practice, you don’t progress,” is Ms. Colesanti’s philosophy. “And if you don’t want to practice because you are bored, tired or overwhelmed, you should consider another career.” Her advice is from the heart, as she never wants to see one of her students set themselves up to fail. “You have a choice in what you do,” she counsels them. “You pick and choose your life. I count every day a blessing when I can do what I love.” Ms. Colesanti holds a master’s degree in education and counseling from Hofstra University,

According to Smithsonian.com, the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating traces its origins to the Celtic tradition of dressing up as evil spirits at the end of the year, but unlike the trick-or-treaters of today, the Celts did not dress up for fun or in search of candy. According to Celtic belief, the dead and the living would overlap

during the transition from one year to the next. Celts also believed that demons would roam the earth during this transition period. So Celts dressed up as evil spirts so the demons they believed were walking the earth would mistake them as one of their own. It was not just the Celts who contributed to what Halloween has become today. Historians believe

that trick-or-treating may also be rooted in the medieval practice of “souling,” in which poor children would go from door-to-door on All Souls’ Day and ask for food in exchange for prayers for the dead, both Celtic traditions and the practice of souling no doubt contributed to modern Halloween traditions.
