The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final weekend of 2015 with its first-ever Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Sunday, October 11th. Hundreds children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. In honor of the high seas adventure theme, The Priceless Parrot Rescue Organization was in attendance to host a “take a pic with a parrot” booth. The photo opportunity exhibit raised donations to support the Priceless Parrot’s rescue efforts. The event also supported the Long Island Butterfly Effect Project by encouraging all event attendees to

Semifinalist Named West Babylon Senior High School senior Alexander Barrett has been named a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition. He will have the opportunity to compete with 16,000 other semifinalists for some 8,000 National Merit scholarships to be offered next spring. Barrett was among the 1.5 million juniors who
entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, commonly known as the PSAT. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. To be eligible to advance to the finalist
stage of the competition, Barrett will be required to submit a detailed scholarship application with information about his academic records, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, honors and awards. Scholarship award winners will be selected from among the finalists, who will be announced in February.

Miscellaneous Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

The team wore custom made t-shirts in honor of 2001 West Babylon School District graduate Shannon Saturno (Romanchuk), who also participated in the run with her friends and family. Placing second place overall for the female division was sophomore Tara Hauff, who also won her age division (15-19). Portions of the proceeds of the race went to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

Going National After capturing first place at the county and state levels of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Safety Poster Contest, West Babylon Senior High School ninth-grader Giuliana Grosso’s creation is now heading to judging on the national level. The theme for 2015
contest was “Bully Free Zone” and called for submissions in the following categories: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and special education. Guliana’s poster won in the 6-8 grade category, as it was submitted last year when she was at the junior high school. The National School
Bus Safety Poster Contest is sponsored each year by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and the National School Transportation Association.
Lifelong Learners More than a dozen West Babylon School District teachers, along with curriculum specialist Jennifer Hoffman, attended two conference days at Teachers College at Columbia University this fall. The “Units of Study Conference Days: Implementing Rigorous Coherent Units of Study in Reading and Writing” were led by Lucy Calkins. The conference was
designed to help teachers learn how to use a workshop approach to reading/ writing instruction in ways that accelerate students’ progress toward meeting ambitious new global standards. The conference supports West Babylon’s initiative of implementing the Teachers College Units of Study in Writing in grades K-5. Teachers were also provided the Teachers College Units of Study in
Reading, with a planned implementation in 20162017. “The commitment to these trainings shows how West Babylon educators engage in and value their own professional learning and support the learning of colleagues,” said Hoffman. “The teachers worked as a team to take collective responsibility for the high achievement of our diverse student population.”

Keep On Walking Babylon Elementary School students laced up their sneakers, put on their backpacks and headed to school on October 7th without the help of conventional means of transportation as part of International Walk to School Day. With walking-themed music playing over the school’s outdoor speakers, students, parents and staff took part in the
movement that shows their commitment to a healthy lifestyle and protecting the environment. Upon arrival, either on foot, by bicycle, scooter or even wagon, students showed off their colored paper sneakers decorated as part of the day’s program. The colorful sneakers will be displayed in the building as a reminder to stay active. The international event
features communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 and has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and active, healthy lifestyles. This is the eighth year BES has participated in the event, which was coordinated by physical education teacher Rob Andrews.

School Pride Shines Even though Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s homecoming festivities were rescheduled due to the weather, the school didn’t pass up the opportunity to show off their school pride with activities such as spirit week, spirit night and a pep rally.
At the pep rally on October 8th, each of the fall teams were introduced, the high school marching band entertained the crowd and members of the gymnastics and cheerleading teams showed off their skills. Kyle Baldwin and Shayne Antolini, who were announced as homecoming
king and queen the night prior, were seated front and center in their respective thrones. During the October 7th spirit night, the different classes took part in teambonding events, such as dance-offs, scooter and potato sack races, a basketball shoot out.

On Friday, September 25th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey hosted a Senior Health Fair at the Babylon Public Library. Although the event was created specifically for those 60-plus, it was also open to their families and to businesses that provide services to the senior population. The purpose of this event was to fully inform local seniors of the wide array of service that are available to them through both Suffolk County government and various non-profit agencies. Seniors had the opportunity to learn about important issues related to veterans,
medical conditions, identity theft, and so much more. Additionally, if they so desired, seniors were offered free identification cards, blood pressure screenings, and the ability to safely discard prescription medications. “Suffolk County is very fortunate to have both a thriving senior population, and the support system that such a group needs,” said McCaffrey. “Although plentiful senior services exist throughout Suffolk County, they are all-toooften overlooked. I believe one of the most important things that an elected official can do is to educate the public,
and we are doing a great job at that today. I am so grateful for all of the participating agencies and organizations, as it could not have happened without them. As part of National Fire Safety Week, students at William E. DeLuca Elementary School in the North Babylon School District received a visit from the North Babylon Fire Department for an informative lesson on fire prevention, fire safety, and fire equipment. Students in all grade levels had the opportunity
to participate in a variety of activities designed to make them aware of fire hazards and how firefighters work to protect them. In one activity, students were helped to escape from the window of a trailer that was set up as a room in a home. Students also watched videos and lectures, completed readings and handouts, and climbed into

Student Spotlight THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE SUBMITTED BY: JUSTIN MCGOWAN, AGE 16, MASSAPEQUA HIGH SCHOOL
I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed
over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.
History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

The gastronomic tradition known as “Great Chefs of Long Island”, benefiting Family Service League (FSL), will be held on Monday, November 9th, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Babylon Memorial Grade School art teacher Patricia Stork was selected as one of 51 participants in the 2015 National Gallery of Art Teacher Institute on Art of the Renaissance in Washington, D.C.
The six-day seminar brought together teachers of art, English, history, math, and related subjects from 25 states. The program emphasized the social and cultural context of Renaissance art in Italy and Northern countries between the 14th and 16th centuries. “The National Gallery’s Art Teacher Summer Institute was a fantastic experience for me,” Mrs. Stork said. “The program allowed me to really delve deep into Renaissance art. I am excited to bring this experience back to my students and hope
that they will gain a better understanding of Renaissance art.” Participants studied works by leading Renaissance artists and learned about the development of oil-painting techniques, the role of prints in disseminating new ideas, using works of art as primary resources in classroom instruction, incorporating art into interdisciplinary teaching, and strengthening students’ visual literacy. Social Studies Storytelling As part of their social studies curriculum, West Babylon Junior High School seventh-graders have been learning about the history of the Iroquois Native Americans and recently participated in an oral history lesson on the Iroquois creation myth. Surrounded by a mock
campfire, soft music and their social studies teachers, who were dressed in Native American attire, students learned about the way stories were passed by the tribe. The school’s three social studies teachers took turns presenting the interactive story to the active listeners.
After the presentation, students were asked about the different symbols presented in the story and cited specific examples. Back in class, students drew pictures of the characters in the myth and also designed their own creation myth scenes.

The students met with the County Sheriff in his office and then were escorted through many of the jail’s housing areas, the holding pen, internal intelligence operations, and its specialized units
where correctional staff book and perform iris scans of incoming inmates. The Sheriff’s Office provides tours of the Riverhead Jail for more than a thousand high school and college students each year through its popular Youth Enlightenment Seminar (YES) initiative. The Jail also offers personal YES tours for parents to accompany their atrisk youth to give them a firsthand look at life
behind bars. “These tours give students a realistic view of corrections work and, from a different perspective, what daily life is like for an inmate at the County Jail. You just can’t get this kind of understanding from a TV show or from reading a textbook,” stated DeMarco. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and the League of Women Voters of Suffolk County on October 8th hosted 27 high school students from Hauppauge High School, Commack High School, Smithtown High School East, Huntington High School and North Babylon High School for a

The League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, and this program served to expose our students to the workings of their county legislature, and actually experience, via role-playing, how a bill becomes a law in Suffolk County.” Following presentations from officials representing various county agencies, students broke into caucuses to discuss mock legislation that would ban the use of drones over school property. In a simulated General Meeting, students portrayed legislators and concerned citizens who argued for or against the bill. After lively debate, the bill failed to obtain the majority needed to pass, as the vote tied at 9-9. “Student Day at the Suffolk County Legislature was a valuable experience that helped me better my communication skills and increase my knowledge of our local government,” said Ally McFadyen, a senior at Smithtown High School East. “I loved posing as the Presiding Officer because it gave me the power to conduct a General Meeting and understand how the Legislature functions. I plan on incorporating the skills I acquired during this exercise into my daily life by addressing issues clearly and working in a group to find the best solution to a problem. I would like to thank the Suffolk County Legislature and the League of Women Voters for organizing this event, which has inspired me to get more involved in my community.” In addition to Presiding Officer Gregory, the day’s speakers included: 12th District Legislator Leslie Kennedy, 13th
District Legislator Robert Trotta, Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy and Suffolk County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Caplan. Representatives from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Suffolk County Police Department, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Protection also addressed the students. Additionally, community volunteer Leah Richberg of West Babylon offered a presentation on cultural competency, and representatives from Long Island Cares and Habitat for Humanity spoke about the public service performed by nonprofit organizations and how they interact with the county to further their missions. “I’ve worked with the League of Women Voters for many years, and I hold that organization in very high regard,” said Comptroller Kennedy, who previously served as a county legislator. “It comes as no surprise that the League would offer this opportunity for students to
learn about public service. I encourage these young people to pursue further opportunities in county government by interning with one of our elected officials or agencies.” “I am thrilled that several school districts from the area I represent attended this event,” said Legislator Kennedy. “We will one day have to pass the responsibility of policy-making to the next generation, and they will be making the decisions that affect us as senior citizens. It is important that we instill in these youth now the importance of both compassion and fiscal responsibility.” “I think this event provided a great opportunity for students to learn how county government works and to meet some of the legislators,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. A pizza lunch was donated by the office of County Executive Steve Bellone.
