Assemblyman Durso & Drug Free Long Island To Hold A Free Narcan Training In Babylon Village

Assemblyman Michael Durso and Drug Free Long Island (DFLI), in partnership with the Village of Babylon, Suffolk County Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey, Senator Phil Boyle, and Senator Alexis Weik, will be holding a free Narcan Training on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Babylon Public Library. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. The training will include an opiate informational

presentation, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

Babylon Encouraging Donations To Assist Puerto Rico And Florida In Wake Of Hurricanes Fiona And Ian

The images emerging from the State of Florida in recent days and Puerto Rico in recent weeks are heartbreaking. As a shoreline community that has experienced devastation caused by Mother Nature, our hearts are with the people of Puerto Rico and Florida as are our thoughts and prayers. We will soon mark the 10 year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy devastating our community. In the wake of Sandy, Babylon received immense support through all sorts of donations.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the Babylon Town Board are encouraging residents to show Puerto Ricans and Floridians the same generosity we were shown

10 years ago through monetary donations to private funds set up to support those affected by both storms.

PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is a disaster relief fund that has been focused on rebuilding Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Following Hurricane Fiona’s impact on the island, the organization is collecting money for short and long-term humanitarian needs.

The PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is organized in partnership with the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, a 501(c)(3) tax deductible corporation.

The Florida Disaster Relief Fund. The Florida Disaster Relief Fund is the state’s official private fund established to assist

Floridians in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Donations to the fund are made through the Volunteer Florida Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible charity organization. State officials have announced that the disaster relief fund is the best way to help Floridians who are struggling in the wake of Ian.

NORTH BABYLON’S RECORD-BREAKING RUNNING BACK - North Babylon High School senior running back Nathaniel Griffith broke three separate records during the varsity football game against Smithtown High School West on Oct. 1. Griffith made history during the homecoming game, breaking the North Babylon High School, Suffolk County and Long Island single game rushing yards record with 38 carries, 489 yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, the North Babylon varsity football team broke the previous school scoring record in their win by putting up 75 points. The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Additionally, the program offers nutrition and fitness workshops focusing on healthy lifestyle choices. If you would like more information about this program, please visit www. helenkeller.org.

Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought

4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer

Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8,

15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities; deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.

A New Principal For Babylon Memorial Grade School

The Babylon Union Free School District has hired Jeffrey Haubrich as principal of Babylon Memorial Grade School. He brings 24 years of experience in education to the district, including 17 years in administrative roles.

“I am excited to be here, and to serve this tight-knit school community,” Mr. Haubrich said. “Coming into a new district, my first steps are to get to know the students, parents and staff here. Between the people I have already met and the programs I have seen, it is clear there is a lot going very well here. I look forward to collaborating with my new school family as we build upon these successes.”

Mr. Haubrich received

his bachelor’s in human development and family studies from Cornell University, his master’s in elementary education from Boston University and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from Hofstra University. He was inspired to pursue a career in education while an undergraduate after observing a group of excited young teenagers at a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game. “I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life around kids like this, and my interest deepened from there,”

Mr. Haubrich said. “As I began studying to become a teacher, my passion for public education developed. I was inspired by the role that it plays in

creating an educated public that is so important to the success of our community and our country. It is a role that I take very seriously.”

Mr. Haubrich got his start in 1998 as a middle school teacher for the Port Washington Union Free School District. There, he became heavily involved in school activities such as student government, soccer and other various school programs. “It became my life and I loved it,” he recalled.

“From there I thought about ways to affect change on a larger scale and moved into the administrative track,” he said. In 2005 he became an elementary school assistant principal for the Half Hollow Hills Union Free School District, and in 2007,

principal in the NorthportEast Northport Union Free School District, where he spent 14 years in that role. In 2021, Mr. Haubrich briefly served as a principal in the Dorchester School District Two in South Carolina before returning to be closer to his family.

As he acclimates himself to the new school and district, Mr. Haubrich said his initial focus is ensuring student wellbeing and building upon that foundation. “There are many components to education that I am passionate about,” he said.

“For me, student wellbeing is a major foundation. That’s day one. We’ll grow programs from there.”
