8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk To Support Overdose Prevention & Education And Addiction Treatment Services On Long Island

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, hosted the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9. The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose

in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the support needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the

historic Jones Beach Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. It offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones.

Long Island’s south shore played host to the inaugural edition of Northwell Health IRONMAN® 70.3® New York – Jones Beach

triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 23. Participating athletes were treated to an IRONMAN 70.3 journey highlighted by the world-famous Jones

Beach State Park, home of 6.5 miles of beautiful white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean. In the age group men’s race, Ross Baldwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.),

in the 35-39 age group, was the first to cross the line with a time of 3:40:47. Evelyne Papillon (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada), finished first

in the 40-44 age group, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:32:44.

More than 2,300 athletes from 46 U.S. States and 43 countries, regions and territories travelled to Long Island to compete in the inaugural race that began with a shortened 750-meter swim in Zach’s Bay just outside the famous Jones Beach Amphitheater before embarking upon the 56-mile closed bike course on the flat and fast Wantagh Parkway. The 13.1-mile run course took athletes onto the boardwalk alongside the Atlantic Ocean with an unforgettable finish line on the beach.

Due to the weather conditions on race morning, IRONMAN and local officials made the decision in the interest of athlete safety and the strict benchmarks in place, the swim portion of IRONMAN 70.3 New York

triathlon shortened to a 750-meter (0.46 mile) swim.

The Northwell Health IRONMAN 70.3 New York – Jones Beach will return to Long Island’s South Shore on Sept. 28, 2024. General registration for the 2024 edition will open on Oct. 4, 2023.

Lung Association Launches First LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island – and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever LUNG FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023

LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as celebratory and welcoming events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness. The New York City Walk, which took place in May, saw more than 1,000 people participate, raising over $275,000.

“The Long Island community has been deeply impacted by Lung Cancer, and many Long Island residents have joined

us for events in Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. This year, we are proud to bring our LUNG FORCE walk right here to Eisenhower Park where more families impacted by lung disease are able to participate,” said Erica Masin, Executive Director at the Lung Association. “Today, more Americans than ever are surviving lung cancer. The survival rate has increased by nearly 40% in the past decade—but there is still so much work to be done. Nicole Sturiano, a resident of Ridge, New York and captain of Team Jeanine has helped raise over $50,000 and has participated in the New York City LUNG FORCE Walk since its inception in 2015. She said, “My sister, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 42 years old. After just two years of fighting the toughest battle of her life, Jeanine passed

Horseshoe Crabs: Blue-Blooded Laboratory Stars

Horseshoe Crabs: BlueBlooded Laboratory Stars, will be presented by Dr. John Tanacredi, at the South Shore Audubon Society Meeting on Tuesday, October 10th @ 7:30 PM. The program will be at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 W. Merrick Road (at S. Ocean Avenue).

Dr. Tanacredi has tracked up to 115 locations for Horseshoe Crab breeding conditions and habitat on Long Island, and will discuss why they and their habitats are so important.

He is Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Director of CERCOM (Center for

Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring) at Molloy University, and a founding member of the IUCN SSC Horseshoe Crab Specialist Group.

South Shore Audubon Bird Walk

Join the South Shore Audubon Society for a bird walk at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick on Sunday, November 24, starting at 9:00 a.m.

The entrance road to the Norman Levy Preserve is located on the south side of

Merrick Road, just east of the Meadowbrook Parkway. (It is the same road as the Department of Sanitation entrance).

Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you. The bird walk is

free of charge. Bring binoculars. To register, text your name and contact information to 516 467-9498. No walk if it rains. Text regarding questionable weather.
