Street Dedication Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-Massapequa) recently joined colleagues in government and leaders in the community in honoring local Vietnam veteran hero, Private First Class Salvatore Joseph Armato for a street renaming dedication ceremony on the very block he once called home. Private First Class Salvatore Joseph Armato was tragically killed in action while serving in the

Vietnam War on November 30, 1970. A graduate of West Babylon High School, PFC Armato grew up on Manhattan Avenue. In order to keep his memory alive and recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by he and his family, Manhattan Avenue in West Babylon will forever be known as “Private First Class Salvatore Joseph Armato Avenue.” “The West Babylon community lost someone

very special in the Vietnam War 49 years ago,” said LiPetri. “Private First Class Salvatore Joseph Armato may not be here with us anymore, but his memory and spirit will always live on in this incredible community. It was an honor and a privilege to join PFC Armato’s family and friends as we dedicated the street he grew up on in his name.”

Last week, Babylon Rotary Club invited VIBS to their weekly meeting at Long Island Yacht Club to enjoy lunch and accept the clubs donation of $2000 of brand new clothing items for their rape crisis centers. Established in 1976, Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS) has been a pioneer in the domestic violence and rape crisis movements. They STREET DEDICATION - Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-Massapequa) is joined by the work to assist domestic family of Private First Class Salvatore Joseph Armato, for a street renaming dedication violence, rape, sexual ceremony on the very block he once called home. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin assault, child abuse, elder McCaffrey, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Terence McSweeney, abuse, human trafficking & Councilman Tony Martinez, and members of the West Babylon Lions Club and West Babylon American Legion Post #1634 were also in attendance.

PATRIOT DAY LESSON - Fifth graders in Suzanne Cardone’s class at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District spent their social studies lesson on Patriot Day learning about Sept. 11. Students worked in tiered groups to read a differentiated passage about 9/11. The students discussed and annotated the importance of content specific vocabulary, dates, times and information. They used a question guide to select four subheadings in which they used information from the passage to create a pennant that can teach others about the events of Sept. 11. military trauma. VIBS has created a comprehensive program of serives to help support victims which include free legal services, counseling, 24 hour hotline & establishment of rape crisis centers. At the suggestion of Rotary Vice President Megan Noble, our club raised money to purchase new clothing items for VIBS rape crisis centers. These centers, embedded within Stony Brook & Good Samaritan Hospitals, are a safe place where sexual assault

survivors can receive emergency medical care and have forensic evidence properly collected by specially trained nurses. Many times this means that the rape victim will have to submit every article of clothing they are wearing for evidence. The donation was a mix of new mens’ and womens’ socks, underwear, t-shirts and sweat pants will be of great comfort to the victims. Anthony Zenkus & Paige Carbone were present to accept the 6 large boxes of donations.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of

the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
