Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Summer 2023 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

New Assistant Superintendent For Curriculum At Babylon

The Babylon Union Free School District has hired Jeffrey Haubrich as its new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. He replaces Carisa Manza, who is now Babylon’s superintendent of schools.

Mr. Haubrich brings 25 years of experience in education to the role, including 18 in administrative positions. He previously served as principal of Babylon Memorial Grade School, where he was brought on for the 2022-2023 school year. “I had an amazing first year at Babylon Memorial Grade School, and I have had the pleasure of working with outstanding educators and supportive members of our school community,” Mr. Haubrich said. “I have seen great work being done throughout Babylon School District, and I am excited to engage in collaboration with all stakeholders at the district level.”

Mr. Haubrich received his bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from Cornell University, his master’s in elementary education from Boston University, and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from Hofstra University. He was inspired to pursue a career in education while an undergraduate after observing a group of

excited young teenagers at a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game. “I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life around kids like this, and my interest deepened from there,” Mr. Haubrich said. “As I began studying to become a teacher, my passion for public education developed. I was inspired by the role that it plays in creating an educated public that is so important to the success of our community and our country. It is a role that I take very seriously.”

Mr. Haubrich got his start in 1998 as a middle school teacher for the Port Washington Union Free School District. There, he became heavily involved in school activities such as student government, soccer and other various school programs. “It became an important part of my life, and I loved it,” he recalled.

“From there I thought about ways to affect change on a larger scale and moved into the administrative track,” he said. In 2005 he became an elementary school assistant principal for the Half Hollow Hills Union Free School District, and in 2007, principal in the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, where he spent 14 years in that role. In 2021, Mr. Haubrich briefly served as a building administrator in the Dorchester School District Two in South Carolina before returning to be closer to his family.

As assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, Mr. Haubrich said he looks to further improve instructional continuity and communication between grade levels and between District buildings. He also looks forward to continuing to build trust and foster open lines of communication between the Babylon community and the District leadership.

“I am honored and excited to join the leadership team as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be in the role,” Mr. Haubrich said. “I am looking forward to all of the great work we will do together on behalf of our students and families.”

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation

Babylon JuniorSenior High School has been named a School of Distinction for the 20222023 school year by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). This prestigious award is given only to schools in which all of their varsity sports teams have achieved NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team status throughout the course of the school year. Babylon was one of only 20 high schools in Suffolk County to be named a School of Distinction, and one of only 35 across the Island.

“This recognition is a testament to our student athletes’ dedication both on the field and in the classroom,” said Babylon Athletic Director Michael De Joseph. “Congratulations to our students, coaches, and staff for this great accomplishment.”

Towards the end of each sports season, the NYSPHSAA honors varsity teams that have excelled both athletically and academically as Scholar Athlete teams. The NYSPHSAA specifically awards varsity teams

that collectively earn a grade point average of 90 percent or higher during the season. Babylon High School had all 24 of its teams achieve Scholar Athlete status throughout all three seasons for 20222023.

“This is another reminder of the Babylon School District’s excellent record both academically and athletically,” said Superintendent of Schools Carisa Manza. “Our student athletes worked so hard throughout the year, and we are so happy that their collective efforts are being recognized.”

Babylon UFSD Selects New Assistant Superintendent For Curriculum And Instruction

The Babylon Union Free School District has hired Carisa Manza as its new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Ms. Manza brings nearly 23 years of education experience to the role. She replaces Travis Davey, who is now superintendent of schools for the Fire Island School District.

Ms. Manza got her start in education in 2000 as a high school social studies teacher for the Sewanhaka Central High School District before moving on in 2002 to teach the same subject for the Hauppauge School District. She received her bachelor of arts in social studies education from Stony Brook University, her master of liberal arts degree and diploma in school administration and supervision from Queens College.

“I’ve always liked helping people, and I felt that teaching was a profession that allowed me to do that,” Ms. Manza said. “I’ve always wanted my students to feel comfortable taking risks, and I’ve always wanted to find ways to ensure that every student is able to access the

curriculum. To do that, it has been always important to me that I establish positive relationships with students as both people and learners, to set high expectations, and to inspire students to meet those expectations.”

In 2008, Ms. Manza began her transition into the administrative side of education and was hired as assistant principal at Seaford High School in the Seaford Union Free School District. In 2014 she became assistant principal of the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District, and in 2016 became principal of John H. Glenn

“I’ve always wanted every student to meet with success, and when I was able to accomplish that in the classroom my mentors encouraged me to take my model of a safe and rigorous instruction to the building level,” Ms. Manza recalled. “Now, I’d like to take that philosophy to the district level.”

“Ms. Manza has long proven to be an effective building administrator, and I look forward to seeing the ways in which she will maintain and push the Babylon School District’s tradition of academic excellence to new heights,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Brian Conboy.

For now, Ms. Manza said her first priority will be getting to know her new school community. “I believe that great work can happen when you build strong relationships,” she said. “The sooner I do that, the more work we can accomplish together. I’ve always believed that schools, teachers and district administrators exist to serve the larger community. I’m a servant leader, and I’m here to serve.

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and non-breast cancer survivors—are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm.

Attendance at all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising.

Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.

Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience:

I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was life-altering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.

I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I

was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind

of help to others. I do peer support for two women— linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health

and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.

The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.
