– Helen Keller As I awaken on the morning of my forty-fourth birthday I am reminded of the first thought that crossed my mind four years ago, on the morning of my fortieth birthday. The thought was this: “Okay kid, the first half of the ride is over. What are you going to do with the second half? You’d better make it count.”

I knew immediately that for all the accomplishments I’d achieved up until that point - becoming a professional writer, some travel, motherhood, great times with people I love, some spiritual growth - one thing that seemed to be missing in that moment was my next great adventure. I’d always been fascinated by horses and felt a sense of peace around them. I wanted to further explore that connection. I immediately went down to a local horse ranch in Melville, called Thomas School of Horsemanship, and signed up for horseback riding lessons.

I’ll never forget the way my heart pounded and the initial fear I felt as I mounted a horse for the very first time. It was a combination of, “My God, this animal is big and high off the ground!” and “I’m doing it! I’m learning to ride a horse.”

At the close of my first lesson, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so accomplished and proud to have tried something new and unfamiliar. Now, four years later, riding horses is as natural to me as breathing; it is my sanctuary. I enjoy riding English-saddle when I am in New York, and Western saddle when I am in Florida. When I am on a horse, the chaos of 21st century life melts away and things feel simple and beautiful.

We all need that sacred retreat in our lives; something to look forward to that takes us out of our daily routine and allows us to be pure joyful consciousness.

You elected to come into this physical plane to experience all that being human has to offer. Fill your life with as many moments as you can that make you feel alive.

suddenly got an image in my mind from a scene in the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future (one of my all-time favorites).

Doc Brown points to three illuminated dates on a screen, on the DeLorean Time Machine’s dashboard. He explains to Marty, “This one tells you where you are; this one tells you where you’re going; this one tells you where you’ve been.”

If you visualize your mind as a camera, you can choose to pan out for a wider shot of your life.

It’s a great exercise and offers the gift of perspective to examine where you are, where you’re going and where you’ve been. Try to see your life from that higher perspective. You will gain some clarity and inspiration that may direct you towards your life’s next great adventure.

For many of us who are in our forties and beyond, the first half of the ride may indeed be behind us, but the second half, backed by earned wisdom, can be filled with unlimited new experiences if you allow it.

Owenburg joined the West Babylon Fire Department in 1970 at 20 years old. He joined his father-in-law’s fire company, Rainbow Hose Co. 1, and served as Lieutenant in 1973. In 1974 he moved to Mastic, where he joined the Mastic Fire Department.

He served with the Mastic FD for six years, serving as second Lieutenant in

1978, before moving back to West Babylon where he rejoined the West Babylon FD. He then rose up the ranks in West Babylon from Chief Driver, Lieutenant, Captain and now Treasurer of Rainbow Hose Co. 1.

In 1992 he became the Third Assistant Chief and then Chief of Department in 1998. In addition, Owenburg is a member of the West Babylon Rescue Squad as an EMT for 10 years.

A member of FASNY, he began with the Communications Committee and then moved to the EMS Committee. He has organized the Long Island Day at the FASNY Firemen’s Home for the past twelve years, where Suffolk County and Nassau County come together to visit and honor their fellow firefighters.

Owenburg is a member of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association where he served as President. He is also the Past President and Treasurer of the Suffolk County Firefighter’s Burn

Suffolk Parks Schedule for Fall Suffolk County Executive, Steve Bellone, today announced the fall schedule for Suffolk County Department of Parks facilities, postLabor Day. After another successful year with strong attendance across all County parks, beaches and campgrounds, the fall schedule aims to continue to drive visitors with new

permit and time incentives for a range of activities, as well as other important parks related information and events.

Craig T. Nelson on Book Club and Incredibles 2

From playing football fanatic, Hayden Fox, on the long running sitcom Coach; Zeek Braverman on Parenthood; and countless big screen roles, actor Craig T. Nelson’s career has been as versatile as it is prolific.

It was his voice work in 2004’s Disney Pixar movie, The Incredibles, that introduced Nelson to a young audience. His voice is so recognizable as the voice of Mr. Incredible, that the world stops spinning for a beat whenever a starstruck child hears him speak.

Nelson recently played Mary Steenburgen’s husband in the romantic comedy, Book Club and resumed his role as Mr. Incredible in Incredibles 2.

Allison Kugel: What does an ensemble piece like Book Club allow you to do as an actor?

Allison Kugel: Book Club addresses that mid-to-later-life slump that people can slide into without even realizing it’s happening. How do you think men experience this phase of life differently from women?

Craig T. Nelson: I think we experience it in much the same way. It depends

Allison Kugel: In Book Club, your wife, played by Mary Steenburgen, is upset because she feels your marriage has fallen into a slump. Do you think marriage should be able to go through its natural ebbs and flows?

Craig T. Nelson: If you’re married to your best friend, as I am, you have to realize you’re going to have ups and downs. You’re physically going to change, emotionally you’re going to change. You have to adapt and be prepared for that stuff. That’s also part of the adventure. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to older actors about aging. I was a young working actor, and they were all telling me how difficult it was for them, and how they were approaching a period in their life where they felt they weren’t working as much. When it started happening to me, I think I was prepared for it to a certain degree.

Allison Kugel: People may not know that you began your career as a standup comedian.

Craig T. Nelson: Barry Levinson and

I did stand up [comedy] together for four years, and then another guy, Rudy DeLuca, joined us. We wrote and performed comedy, and then we worked with Tim Conway, John Byner and Alan King. That’s how I started in the business.

Allison Kugel: How did that experience inform how you approach a role?

Craig T. Nelson: I was never really interested in doing standup comedy.

Barry Levinson and I were in the Oxford Theatre together, which was a theatre group in LA. We got to talking and Barry said, “Why don’t we do a standup act?” I had never done that and never even thought of it, but we put an act together. We went out and auditioned and started doing clubs. It was an intro into the business, and I met so many incredible people during that time. It does give me a different perspective on acting. Comedy helped me to enlarge and be better at what I did. Another important thing is that you just get better as you get older.

I’m so much more comfortable in a scene now than I ever was. There are so many experiences and so many people to draw on. It’s a wonderful place to be.

Allison Kugel: This is not your first time playing Mary Steenburgen’s husband. You also played husband and wife in the 2009 movie, The Proposal, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. How was it playing her husband again in Book Club?

Craig T. Nelson: She’s so much fun to work with. She’s got this wonderful quirkiness to her that is so beautiful. It’s also very challenging, because you need to stay on top of your game with her, as with all the actresses in this film. I’ve worked with Diane [Keaton], I’ve worked with Jane [Fonda], I hadn’t met Candice [Bergen] until this film, so that was neat. I look forward to continuing to work with Mary. There is an understanding between me and Mary. You’re able to ask questions of each other or address problems in a scene together. There’s no wandering around, trying to get to the truth of something.

Allison Kugel: Let’s switch gears and discuss Incredibles 2! In the first movie, The Incredibles, your character, Mr. Incredible is struggling with living life as a civilian. He’s dying to be a superhero again and to use his powers. Holly Hunter’s character, Elastigirl, wanted a normal family life.

In Incredibles 2, it’s reversed. She’s

out being a superhero and you’re the stay-at-home dad. How does that go for Mr. Incredible?

Craig T. Nelson: He doesn’t quite understand it and is feeling rejected, like, “Why don’t they want me out there?” He now has to take a back seat and for him that’s difficult. He makes the sacrifice for his wife. He’s got a resentment going on, but as you watch him at home you get to know these kids in a way that’s fun and interesting. And you get to see a guy have to adapt and get to know his children in a way that he hasn’t. That was neat for me to play.

Allison Kugel: How do you get into character when you’re voicing Mr. Incredible?

Craig T. Nelson: You prepare ahead of time in the session, especially vocally because there are a lot of different ranges you have to get to.

There are scenes when you’re doing a lot of yelling and shouting. And it’s a long and involved process that’s complexly different from regular acting.

And then you have to convince this kid that you are! And you feel like an idiot trying to get a seven-year-old to believe you (laughs). They look at you with this wonder, yet at the same time disbelief. It gets confusing even for me.

Allison Kugel: My nine-year-old is obsessed! He loved both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, when it hit theatres this summer.

Craig T. Nelson: The special FX are extraordinary. Since 2004 when the original movie was out, they’ve developed a whole new range of different processes that have gone into this second movie, including its color enrichment. For me, the exciting thing about the second movie is the character Jack Jack, the baby, really comes alive and that’s going to be so much fun for people to see. What’s so great about this movie is that it’s a family deal. You can take your family to this movie and have a great time. And same with Book Club.

It’s two movies I’m proud to let my family watch.

Allison Kugel: I’m sure you’ve watched the first movie, The Incredibles, with your grandchildren.

What do they think of you playing Mr. Incredible?

Although in Book Club, most of my scenes are with Mary [Steenburgen]. There are only one or two scenes where I’m with everyone.

Cosmetically and pharmaceutically you’re supposed to be able to prolong your life, or at least the appearance of it. The reality is that you do age. Yes, we are living longer, but there’s more pressure. I suppose it’s how that manifests in each of us, which has to do with our own personality. There’s a lot of pressure to be young. But there is also a lot of pressure being old, not to get any older. I think that is so screwed up.

Babylon Beach Blast Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board invited residents to Overlook Beach on Saturday, August 20th for the Town’s annual Beach Blast. The event featured live music, raffles for charity, rides, games and even an ice creameating contest.

Beachgoers lined Overlook for a latesummer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves.

as they were cheered on by friends, family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group.

After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2018 summer season.

The 50+ LifeStyles Golf Outing, has announced openings are still available for their 25th Annual Event, to be held at Timber Point Country Club in Great River, NY. This is the only golf event on Long Island held strictly for Baby Boomers and seniors who love golf.

This year’s event is being co-sponsored by AARP Long Island and Bristol Financial.

The golf event is open to all individuals and foursomes.

Men and women golfers of all abilities, age 50+ are welcome to participate, along with their sons or daughters or grandchildren. The annual event, now in its 25th year, includes greens fee, cart, breakfast, lunch, dinner and open bar after golf.

Making funeral arrangements at the time of need is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. You have a limited time to make emotional decisions, economic decisions, and personal decisions that may affect you and your family well in to the future. “Necessity”, or limited time to make decisions as Ben Franklin says, never made for a good bargain - meaning that you make economic decisions that will cost more than they would if you had more time to contemplate the cost of a funeral including cemetery, cremation, caskets etc. This saying may well refer to emotional decisions as well as personal decisions. Making emotional decisions under undue stress and strain may skew your thinking, thus offending someone unintentionally or making the funeral unnecessarily difficult for you and your family because of interference from someone outside your immediate family.

In legal terms, if somone else forces you to make a decision such as this, it is called duress and the decision can be rendered null and void. But if you make such a decision on your own, unfortunately, you will have to live with it.

Pre-need funeral arrangements allow individuals and families to examine their options, and the opportunity to discuss with each other the type of funeral they want for each other. Although you can pay for a funeral in advance if you desire, you do not need to pay for a funeral to have the type of funeral you wish on record. Simply give us a call and we can discuss your options over the phone or you and members of your family can come into the funeral home and we will gladly explain all your options. We can show you caskets and discuss costs with you so that you will be prepared. Our funeral directors are always prepared to help you. You need to be prepared to deal with funreal directors. Take our word for it - it is better to deal with them in advance before the “Necessity”, than it is to deal with them under emotional personal strain.
