Her idea earned her Girl Scout’s Silver Award. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2013-2014 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! The start of the school year was a celebratory one in the Babylon School District, as more than 20 staff members were recognized for their years of service during this September’s Superintendent’s Conference Day. District administrators, teachers and staff members convened in Babylon High School’s Rowe Hall to congratulate those individuals who have worked in the district for the past 20, 25 and 30 years. Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis thanked the staff members for their dedication to Babylon and presented each of them with a small token of the district’s appreciation. To mark the twelfth anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks, the Town of Babylon and the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association hosted a remembrance ceremony at the Town’s 9/11 Memorial, located in between Cedar and Overlook beaches on Ocean Parkway. At the ceremony, a list of the names of those from the area who died that day was read. Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer delivered the

opening remarks. “Forty eight Babylon residents lost their lives that fateful day and this community will never forget them,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “We lean on each other, we pray for the victim’s families, and we give thanks for the heroes of that day, as well as the heroes that still protect us, from our local firehouse to our armed forces abroad. As remember 9/11, we stand united as a community,

and as a country, stronger and more resilient than ever.” Several local fire departments were in attendance for the memorial, as well as local officials including Councilman Tom Donnelly, who served as a decorated member of the New York City Fire Department for over 20 years and was part of the recovery effort following the events of 9/11.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Tom Donnelly have announced that the Town of Babylon will be hosting the Sean’s Hope workshop, which is a series of free seminars to promote awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and educate friends and family members of those who are experiencing symptoms. Each seminar will revolve around a different topic of discussion and will feature different guest speakers. The program will discuss ways to recognize PTSD symptoms related to the experiences of veterans and members of the armed forces, Superstorm Sandy survivors and victims of crime and domestic abuse. “From our proud service members to the residents affected by Superstorm Sandy, many of our friends, family members and neighbors are fighting a silent battle within themselves as a result of a traumatic or lifethreatening experience,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “I strongly encourage those who know someone struggling with PTSD to attend these seminars so that we can gain a better understanding of what they’re going through and help them the best we can.” The eight week workshop will start on September 18th and will be held every Wednesday through November 6th. The first six seminars will be held at the Spangle Drive Senior Center in North Babylon from 7 to 8 p.m., with the final two nights at Tanner Park Senior Center in Copiague. This program is intended only for friends and family of those who suffer from PTSD, not those who have the disorder themselves. Sean’s Hope is strictly an informational program and does not serve as professional therapy or counseling. “The Sean’s Hope Workshop is a tremendous resource for friends and family members of someone

who may be experiencing the effects of PTSD. I strongly encourage all of those interested to join us for our free-flowing conversations to help us better understand the struggles of our neighbors and loved ones,” said Councilman Donnelly, who serves as chairman to the Department of Human Services. The Sean’s Hope Workshop was started by Marie LaPersonerie in honor of her son Sean. Sean served fourteen months in Iraq as a soldier in the United States Army and returned home with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. On New Year’s Eve 2011, Sean was struck by a car while crossing East Main Street in Babylon and died from his injuries four days later. Following Sean’s death, Marie approached the Babylon Town Board with her story and her desire to help others understand what those who have PTSD go through. The topics of the first four seminars of this year are as follows: - September 18th: What is PTSD and How Does it Affect Families? September 25th: Relationships and PTSD - October 2nd: What is Normal Now – Establishing a New Normal - October 9th: Anger and Trauma - October 16th: Self-Care – Maintaining your well-being while caring for someone with PTSD. - October 23rd: Trauma – Childhood Sexual Abuse - October 30th: Sandy Survivors - November 6th: What is Survivor Guilt? Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board recently declared September 3rd, Live Like Ron Day in the Town of Babylon in honor of the late Ron Dieumegard, a longtime resident who was known for his volunteer work and desire to help others. Dieumegard passed away on July 20th at the age of 75 after a five month battle with cancer. Supervisor Schaffer presented Ron’s friends and family members with a proclamation to recognize Ron’s achievements and community service. Dieumegard was a lifelong Copiague resident and a graduate of

Amityville Memorial High School. He volunteered for over 20 years with several organizations including Camp Adventure on Shelter Island, which is a week-long sleep away camp for children with cancer and their siblings. Ron was also an organizer for the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, a member of the Long Island Citizens for Community Values and a donor to the Long Island Teens Challenge. Known for his road trips across the country in his RV, Ron would collect clothing to pass out on his journeys. On one trip, Ron encountered a group of Iraq War veterans on

motorcycles who were riding to raise money for wounded soldiers and ended up traveling with them for six months to help their cause. Ron’s friends and family members decided to start “Like Like Ron” to encourage others to embrace the same charitable spirit and goodwill towards others that Ron himself practiced. “Live Like Ron Day” serves to recognize and promote these values within the Town of Babylon. Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day. In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth. That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch. The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next. And the one after that. Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.) In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

At Johnston’s Wellwood Funeral Home we have a number of pictures of some of the first buildings in Lindenhurst along with pictures of the founders of Lindenhurst, Thomas and Abby Welwood. While we like these pictures there are two we have that we are most proud of. The first is a picture of a 1916 Dodge Hearse, which was the first motorized Hearse in Lindenhurst, depicted on Harrington Avenue in Lindenhurst right in front of the first funeral home in Lindenhurst which is Johnstons’ Wellwood Funeral Home. At the time it was only know as Wellwood funeral home while it was owned at the time by the town undertaker, Charles Heling, who later became mayor of Lindenhurst. The second picture is a page out of a newspaper from 1958 called the Lindenhurst Star. the newpaper shows a picture of the newly named Johnstons’ Wellwood Funeral Home with the new owner Richard H. Johnston standing in front of it. The ad discusses how the funeral home has been purchased by Mr. Johnston and the addition to the funeral home he has added on making it at the time (and currently) one of the largest chapels on the island. Since the purchase by Mr. Johnston it has seen 4 generations of the Johnston family come into the funeral home to service the families of Lindenhurst. We are proud of these photos because of how they display how his facility has been servicing the public for almost 100 years, 55 of those years being under the care and supervision of the Johnston Family.
