Vanderbilt’s Storied “Alva” Yacht William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva.

The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany.

On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943.

Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York.

The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the

The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

From May 9 to October 1, 1917, he patrolled U.S. coastal waters in his ship Tarantula II. (The following details of the Alva’s life as the USS Plymouth are from the Vanderbilt Museum archives and from Uboat. net, a history website based in Iceland with contributing writers from Germany, the United States, Canada and Europe.)

On April 20, 1942, the Plymouth was commissioned and based in Norfolk, Virginia.

Golf Outing Raises Funds

On a hot Monday in July, the Babylon Athletic Booster Club welcomed parents, coaches, and golfers to its fourth annual golf outing. This year’s outing venue changed to the beautiful Colonial Springs Golf Club.

The success of the event was measured by the community participation, many laughs and the over $10,000.00 raised at the event. All the monies raised go to support the student athletes in the Babylon School sports programs.

The event culminated with the dinner event and the presentation of the Ernie Busch Scholarship award to two Babylon Graduates heading off to college. This year’s winners

were Dana Bushery and Freddy Nocella. Dana is attending Penn State, Freddie is attending Clemson. Also receiving honors were John, Kevin and Dennis from Murphy’s Sport Shack, Babylon for their many years of service to the Babylon Community.

The Boosters thank the many golfers, tee sponsors, event sponsors, coaches, and volunteers for making this year’s event a great success. Thank you also to all the local merchants who provided donations for the raffle event.

Over the past three years the Booster Club has been able to purchase equipment for all the sports teams including two Scoreboards

for Field Hockey, Baseball and Softball, an upgrade to the Basketball Scoreboard, Gymnastic Mats, Chairs for Wrestling, Basketball and Volleyball, Lacrosse and Field Hockey Nets, Football Chute, Outdoor Rolling Scorer’s table, a baseball fence, track team canopy.

The Boosters also sponsor events for teams heading to NYS Championship competitions. The funds raised this year will go to sports programs at the Varsity, JV and Junior High level for much needed equipment.

LARGE GROUP TURNOUT IN 2017 - At last year’s National MPS Society race.

Race to Support MPS Research The Post Office Cafe in Babylon is hosting the 27th Annual Race for MPS on Saturday, October 20th in celebration of Mark and Casey Lessing. Proceeds from the race will benefit the National MPS Society, Inc. Registration and checkins begin at 8 a.m. at The Post Office Café. The 1K fun run begins promptly at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K at 10 a.m. Pre-registration, prior to October 7, costs $13.00 for the fun run and $25.00 for the 5K. Cost to register after October 7 is $15.00 for the fun run and $30.00 for the 5K. Online registration closes on Thursday, October 19th at midnight.

Thereafter, runners must register in-person at The Post Office Café.

The course is 3.1 miles – fast, flat and scenic. The race begins in the heart of the Babylon Village and continues through country roads overlooking the Great South Bay. The finish line is behind The Post Office Café in the municipal parking lot.

Awards are given to the top three overall male and female runners. In addition, awards will be given to the top three runners in eleven different age groups. A special award will be given to the first male and first female Babylon Village residents to cross the finish line.

PRE-RACE PARTY On Friday, October 19th from 4 to 8 p.m., The Post Office Café is hosting a “pre-race” party. Runners are encouraged to join the fun, pick up race shirts and bibs, and enjoy a complimentary buffet and drink on the house.

T-shirts are available on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.

7th Grade Student Orientation Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently hosted an informative orientation session for the incoming seventh-graders in preparation for the upcoming academic school year, which began on Sept.

6.

Upon entering the building, students and their families were invited into Rowe Hall for a welcoming presentation delivered by Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone and Assistant Principal

Jennifer Mangone. During their speeches, they spoke of opportunities incoming students can look forward to, including various clubs and activities offered at the school. Additionally, they touched upon the many classes offered at both the honors and Advanced Placement level, which will further enhance the students’ education.

At the conclusion of the Rowe Hall presentation, families participated in a question-and-answer session as the incoming

students were broken up into groups to further explore the school halls and engage in icebreaker activities within the classrooms hosted by upperclassmen.

Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books.

We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity.

The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride.

Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,

overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York.

After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen.

After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must

believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life.

I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure.

I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son.

Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership.

I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Sarah Logan, of Troop 835 in Babylon Village, earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts on August 2, 2018, at an official ceremony held at the Babylon Village Library.

For her project, Sarah recorded poems and short stories and completed an annotated companion guide to accompany the recordings for nursing home residents. She also provided the residents with comfortable headphones

for the recording device so they could listen anywhere in the facility.

The inspiration for her project was witnessing the loneliness many elderly people suffer and seeing her own Nana, who loved to read, unable to enjoy that activity as she aged.

Her project took about 89 hours in total to complete.

This included research into the issue of elderly loneliness and depression,
