A ‘Where’s Warhol’ style family scavenger hunt will be a children’s component in which a dozen Andy Warhol characters will be hidden in windows at locations throughout the village. Permanent art fixtures such as Jack Jack’s J2X Abstract Art Gallery,Village Art and Frame as well as the Bayman statue by artist and sculptor Jose I. Fernandez will be featured on the walk. BVAC will set up a welcome station at Ooh la la Boutiques where maps can be picked up and there will be giveaways for children who find all of the hidden Warhol’s. BVAC strives to create innovative programs for the community and artists of all ages. This event has been in the planning phase for over a year and

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:

Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers.

Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. If you would like to volunteer, you can as well! This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. Rising juniors at Chaminade High School Matthew and Thomas Stueber have always been thinking about what their plans are after high school. When they were eight, the boys had the opportunity to attend a football game and

tour the campus at West Point. This visit led Matt to setting the dream of attending a military academy and serving his country. Through the years Matthew and Thomas have always sent items the soldiers were in need of to different

charity organizations. After speaking with an Army Ranger after a recent deployment Matt realized what the soldiers really miss are those comfort items that we all take for granted, from there the idea of Sacks for Soldiers took hold. The

18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival Streaming Online For 2020 Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, in cooperation with Suffolk County and the Bluegrass Club of Long Island, is pleased to announce the 18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival. Due to ongoing health concerns, this year’s festival will be presented online, featuring a series of six Saturday night concerts beginning September 26, 2020, and five Wednesday night workshops beginning September 30th. BACCA’s Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, stated, “We are grateful for the support of Suffolk County, ensuring that even during this difficult time we are able to continue the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival into its 18th year. With their help, we can promote our local artists and share their music in a way that is both safe and accessible.” The Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival is a celebration of traditional Bluegrass, Americana and Roots Music. New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up

about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the

summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means

encouraging donors to take the extra step of making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these first-time donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of

drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more donors. Blood from volunteer donors is needed every two seconds to help meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, newborns and mothers delivering babies,
