The Eagle Scout is the highest achievable rank in the Boy Scout organization. Peter earned his Eagle Rank in less than 2.5 years after joining Boy Scouts, an outstanding accomplishment given what is required to advance through the ranks of Boy Scouting and the additional responsibilities of school and work. For his Eagle Scout project, he built green fly catcher boxes that were deployed by the Town of Babylon which will help keep the biting fly population down for town residents using our shores for recreation. Peter also earned 22 merit badges and held the positions

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.
Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture
the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Hero Campaign Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Special Assistant Terence McSweeney recently thanked the dedicated Lowe’s Hero’s Project participants for their donation of materials and labor which transformed North Babylon’s Spangle Drive Senior Center’s grounds. Human Services Commissioner Madeline Quintyne, Deputy Chief of Staff Gerry Compitello and
Beautification Program Director Florence Findley were also in attendance. The Town of Babylon and it’s senior community were thrilled to be the recipient of the Lowe’s Hero’s Project once again. The three-day project resulted in restored bocce and horseshoe courts, benches and picnic tables. Two brick patios were installed, and the perimeter of the facility was outfitted with pristine landscaping. Employees from Lowe’s locations in
Famingdale, Commack and Bayshore assisted with the project. The Town of Babylon enjoys the wonderful partnership and is most appreciative of all the enhancements the committed Lowe’s employees have made at our facility. Supervisor Rich Schaffer thanked store managers Rick Addamo, Michael Karlak and Doug Breindl along with their employees for their continuous efforts.
