organization allowed me to better focus on the {many} tasks at hand in the fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment of a weekly publication. Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area.

Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years.

There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk floral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new

The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reflections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately.

While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close.

I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of

job,” a fixture from the very beginning. There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log flume, holding on for dear life.

And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way.

In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.

Suggested items for donation include binders, colored pencils, erasers, glue sticks, notebooks, pencils, pens, and backpacks.

In celebration of United Way of Long Island’s campaign, the initiative will culminate with “StuffA-Bus” Day at NYCB LIVE on Thursday, September 6th, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall. During this time, volunteers will help sort and pack the essential items students

need at the start of the new schoolyear. After the sorting in complete, school buses will deliver the supplies to the school districts.

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and other special guests recently attended a Court of Honor ceremony to congratulate Michael Quinn on becoming an Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest achievable rank in the Boy Scout organization.

CREMATION AND THE CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITES PART THREE This is the third part of a series about the changes in the Catholic funeral rites as they relate to cremation.

There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body, and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased memebers of the Catholic Church.

Nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains of a person at home on the mantle or in the garage. The Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn.

The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious service prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of a burial or entombment in a mausoleum, the deceased is cremated, but first you can have a wake if desired, religious services, and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underline the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgement concerning the choice that nearly 20% of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological, or family factors, on occasion, make cremation the only feasible choice.

members started on an ambitious hike starting in Brooklyn Atlantic Terminal, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and to Battery Park in the pouring rain. The sun finally came out for our boat trip to Liberty Island where the boys learned about the statue. Then we went to Ellis Island for a history of immigration to the United States. Many boys researched their ancestry and found family names on the wall of immigrants.

After our adventure through history the scouts continued their hike from Battery Park over the Highline to Penn Station.

The entire troop was delighted to have pizza and drinks delivered to them in Highline Park by On August 4th, North adventure to the Statue Highline Pizzeria. It was a Babylon BSA Troop 399 of Liberty. 19 scouts and challenging 17 mile hike embarked on a NYC 21 leaders and family but the troop rose to the

challenge.

Accepting Applications Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program for undergraduate and graduate students seeking internship opportunities in county government.

The new program offers real world experience for students interested in gaining professional public

sector experience and a true understanding of the mechanics outside of the classroom. Students must submit applications no later than August 24th.

“An internship with the Suffolk County Government provides firsthand, invaluable experience in public service,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve

Bellone. “Being exposed to real world innergovernment situations and working closely with the teams in our departments is an education in and of itself.”

This program will provide students with an opportunity to interact with Suffolk County’s residents and key community groups, including exposure

to the inner workings of County department and agencies. Over the course of an internship, interns will have the opportunity to liaise with staff on key initiatives and projects to enhance the Suffolk community.

Students interested in this program should be detail-orientated professionals, with strong time management and

communication skills.

The Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program is a selective program that selects and places candidates within multiple agencies or Departments within Suffolk County government.

Interns are required to work a minimum 15 hours per week, must be 18 or older

and currently enrolled in college. All internships within the program are unpaid.

Timothy Hill is a wonderful nonprofit that offers group home and transitional living programs dedicated to creating hospitable, Christ-centered communities where lives are renewed and restored through love. Timothy Hill opened its doors for the first time in 1980 and has been a safe haven for hundreds of children during desperate times of abuse, neglect and crisis. They have a beautiful ranch in Riverhead, NY on 86 acres, where they have eight group and transitional homes and two horse farms. They are in need of the following supplies for students going back to school: blue, black or brown backpacks, 2 or 3-inch binders and dividers, 3 or 5-subject notebooks, college-ruled; folders with pockets, file folders, regular and scientific calculators, paper clips, small binder clips and wite-out tape.
