Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and ﬂourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body, and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of burial or entombment in a mausoleum, the deceased is cremated. But first, you can have a wake if desired, religious services, and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underline the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgement concerning the choice that nearly 20% of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological, or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice.

New Blades Phase 4 of the Windmill Blade Repairs has been completed. Thanks to the great crew at Five Star Painting of Babylon four new blades have been painted and installed. Five Star Painting of Babylon donated their time and

Babylon Village is an amazing place in so many ways, not the least of which is the community commitment to charitable causes and community service. This past Sunday marked the annual Babylon Classic 10K Dirty Sock Run. This incredible sanctioned event benefits our local food banks and soup kitchens. Up to 1,000 runners make their way from Park Avenue north past Southard’s Pond along the green trail up to Belmont Lake. Circling the lake, the runners head back south and take the eastern trails back through Southard’s, returning to Park Avenue. Hats off to the organizers, participants and sponsors for their commitment to this wonderful event!

Volunteers from our own Babylon American Legion Post 94 took about 20 veterans from the Northport VA Hospital out on a fishing trip on Wednesday, August 9th. Hosted by the crew aboard the Eddie B III, it was a fun-filled day of fishing and eats, followed by a pizza party back at Post 94. Those who attended expressed their deep appreciation to those who cared enough to organize the great day out. By the way, Post 94 takes a crew up to the Northport VA each month to host a little party and visit for those who don’t get out. What a great way to express gratitude to our veterans who might otherwise feel forgotten! The Babylon Village Arts Council sponsored A Celebration of Arts & Family on Saturday, August

5th. The event took place at the Babylon Village Pool and attendees enjoyed live music, dance performances and lots of great kid’s activities including shell painting, a puppet show and so much more. There are still a few great shows remaining in the Friday evening Summer Concert Series at the Argyle Gazebo. All concerts begin at 8 p.m. In the event of rain, concerts are held at Babylon High School.
