By: Jon Taylor With all that summer on Long Island has to offer, it is too easy to lose sight of what a wonderful town we have in our own Babylon Village! When my big brother made a recent visit, we decided to stay local and enjoy my hometown. We visited the Babylon Historical Society and the Babylon Museum at Old Town Hall. Both provided eye-opening reminders of the significant parts of history written right here in our village. The lesson continued as we visited the new Bayman Statue and informational displays, and the Veteran’s Monument at Argyle Park. Wow, what an amazing history Babylon Village has had! Make plans to make your own visit and see what gems you can discover.

After our tour of discovery, we decided to peruse the shops and eateries. Brother Bill remarked on the wonderful array of diverse places to shop and dine lining Deer Park Avenue and Main Street. I guess the point is that during the fun and sun of summer, let’s not forget the local businesses that make Babylon Village such a special place! A great big salute to our village for the parking improvements being made on the south side of Main Street over in the area behind Bunger’s Surf Shop. With the growth our village has enjoyed, every improvement to our available parking is a big plus. Don’t miss out on the

current production of “Hairspray” now through August 26th at The Argyle Theatre. Raves continue to pour in on the theatre itself, and their wonderful productions. What could be better than dinner and a show right here in Babylon Village? The Babylon Village Arts Council will hold another Family Film Night at the gazebo on Wednesday, August 8th at 8 p.m. featuring the movie Ice Age. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years and has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering a considerable amount, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes, something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. Eileen is very dedicated to The Emergency Shelter of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, where she provides her services for free to their residents when they are open in the winter months. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each

and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products! Metamorphosis “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

BACCA is proud to announce The Veterans Art & Photography Exhibition, an art exhibition open to all Active Duty Military and Veterans on Long Island. This exhibit will be open from August 10th to September 11th, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street in Babylon Village. There will be an Artists’ reception that is free and open to the public on Thursday, September 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and refreshments will be served. In conjunction with this art exhibition, BACCA will be hosting two Veteran authors, Jack Bilello and Byron Nernoff, who will speak about their books. This will be held on Thursday, August 30th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street, Babylon Village. Refreshments will be served. BACCA is well known for its support of the arts in the Town of Babylon. This

updates on Double Track, Third Track, upgrades at Penn Station, plans to improve the railroad’s performance, reliability and communication and connections to TOD opportunities. “The LIRR continues to make necessary infrastructure upgrades in an effort to provide the

For the past several weeks I have been discussing the changes in the Catholic Funeral Rites as they pertain to cremation. It is important for all to understand the Catholic Church views the cremated remains of a person the same as it views the body of a person. Therefor, the cremated remains are to be treated with the same reverence and respect as the body which houses the person’s spirit. Another problem arising from cremation is many people think all cremations are “direct cremations” without any services or mass. A cremation can and often does take place after a wake and a funeral mass. A direct cremation does not allow for any pastoral care which is recognized by the Church as an integral part of the grieving process. It has long been a Christian and Catholic tradition for family and friends to gather before the funeral mass to offers support to the bereaved, as well as offering of prayers for the deceased with family and friends present, as opposed to the Jewish tradition when the family sits Shiva only after the funeral service and interment.
