The daylong event kicked off with a family breakfast, complete with a slideshow presentation of photos of the students throughout their elementary years. Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

Suffolk County Community College’s Women’s Bowling Team has been honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) as one of the 20142015 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year. CUP CHAMPIONS - The North Babylon Pride soccer team won 3-2 against the Emily Clark of Port Franklin Square Storm at the Long Island Cup finals, an elimination tournament Jefferson Station; Emily similar in style to the World Cup. The girls have worked hard this season, and their Halbert of Islip; Jordan efforts paid off! Kruger of East Islip; Brianna Meyer of Middle Island; Laura Molloy of St. James and Lena Sorrentino of East Islip ™ were recognized for earning the highest gradepoint average – a 3.37 -- in their respective sport and gender during the 2014-15 academic year. Twelve awards were Featuring The Best Of Long Island, Seasonally! earned by men’s programs and 13 by women’s. Teams are required to compile at least a 3.0 grade-point average to be considered for the honor.

Blocking Out Hunger The Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School held its fourth annual Block Out Hunger Day to raise the children’s awareness of the needs of others in our community. Each child brought in a box of cereal to help build gigantic tower of cereal which was later donated to the United Methodist Church Food Pantry. “Block Out Hunger Day begins our unit on Communities,” said administrator Lisa Murray. “The children are learning the importance of being part of a community, how their actions affect those
around them and how we all can be community helpers. They are very connected to helping others and this part of Block Out Hunger Day demonstrates the “domino effect” in a very special way.” The Community themed unit continued to further reinforce the concept of belonging and contributing to a community when the children constructed the UMC Village which boasted 75 hand painted dioramas. The UMC Village had several schools, fire houses, police stations, doctors’ offices, restaurants as
well as a farm stand and a grocery store. “The children have been delighted to show off the village to their parents and have enjoyed touring the village,” said director Lisa Murray. “We have great support from our families and many parents have visited to share with the children what they do for a living and how they help in our community.” The school, now in its 43rd year, serves 152 families. The school offers programs for 2 ½, 3 and 4 year olds in age-appropriate learning settings.

Unforgettable Moment
As North Babylon High School’s Bulldog mascot greeted guests at the gate to the football field, the stands slowly filled with excited family and friends, there on that cool, cloudy commencement morning of June 27th to see the Class of 2015’s moment of graduation glory. Following a color guard from the North Babylon Fire Department, the students filed onto the field to the traditional sounds of Pomp and Circumstance, their robes and caps forming a sea of alternating blue and white. Senior members of the school’s orchestra and concert choir began the proceedings with The StarSpangled Banner, before several speakers took to the podium. Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Shaffer, an alumnus from North Babylon High School’s Class of 1981, was first to address the seniors. “Congratulations on a job well done,” he told them. “We’re expecting great things from you in the future.” After a stirring performance of “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by the senior members of the school’s concert choir, principal Jonathan Klomp took the stage to list the many accomplishments of the Class of 2015 in scholastics, athletics, science, music, theater and volunteering, as well as their scholarship achievements and colleges they will attend. “The mountains you will climb” was the theme of Klomp’s address, citing examples such as
a teacher who literally climbs mountain peaks in his spare time, and senior Jordan Bailey, the first North Babylon graduate in memory to be accepted to West Point. “Don’t defer your dreams, for all we all need to find out next mountains,” Klomp told his students. “You summit alone, but when you return, your family will be there. On behalf of North Babylon, we wish you all the best.” Interim Superintendent Salvatore Carambia told three pointed stories about dealing with fear, the meaning of success and expecting the unexpected. “Be your own hero,” he told the students. “It’s very special to be here,” said attending Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, a member of North Babylon’s Class of 1987. “I remember when I graduated, and from where you are sitting now, you can achieve your greatest hopes, dreams and desires, whatever they may be.” Senior class copresidents Brad Clark and Leah Petraglia reviewed the last four years they had shared with their classmates, from successes to experiences. “Thank you, North Babylon High School, for making us who we are today,” said Petraglia. Salutatorian Alison Veintimilla veered from convention, calling up her best friend and third-ranked senior Grecia Asencios to share the podium with her. After asking her classmates to offer each other congratulations, Veintimilla lauded the support of parents and
family, which she called “the pillars of life.” Acknowledging that doubt and loss exist, she said, “The future is a scary place, but it’s okay if things don’t go as planned. Detours on the road can be more worthwhile.” Up next was valedictorian Hiah Saljooki, who Klomp noted was the second North Babylon valedictorian in her family. “We should be happy, but not satisfied,” Saljooki said in her address, explaining her personal definition of success and wishing for her fellow seniors to have future experiences far more memorable than even graduation. “Class of 2015, go forth and be successful, one unforgettable moment at a time,” she said. Teacher Lindsey Loscalzo was the featured faculty speaker of the day, telling the graduates, “The world is pretty amazing, go be amazing in it.” Board President Janet Meyerson handed out awards for perfect attendance to Amina Abdelaziz, Kaitlyn Binder and Matthew McGovern, setting the stage for the presentation of diplomas. The 387 proud seniors shrugged off stray raindrops and moments of gusty winds that threatened to send caps flying, walking to the stage for their individual moment of recognition. After turning the tassels from left to right, the newest alumni roared in joy, sending their caps flying to the sky before their families joined them on the field for an extended celebration.

Bright Future It was a day of pride and celebration as 147 students from the Class of 2015 were led onto Coach Williams Memorial Field by the American Celtic Band and color guard during the annual Babylon Junior-Senior High School commencement exercise. After words of reflection by senior class president Kathryn O’Sullivan and student council president Emma Rende, principal Al Cirone welcomed the community and graduates to this joyous occasion. Cirone encouraged the graduates not to follow the crowd, but rather
“be a voice, not an echo.” Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis then imparted sound advice to “be the hero of your own life.” In addition to musical selections by the band and concert chorus, the senior class’ singing of the Babylon Alma Mater and the traditional release of white dove, valedictorian Mohankumar Chintariapalli and salutatorian Ronald Pashen addressed their peers with sage advise. “You all have gifts and need to figure out how to use them,” Mohankumar said.
Promoting Safety West Babylon Junior High School art teacher Jennifer Tomeo’s students participated in the New York Association for Pupil Transportation’s poster contest by designing posters based on the theme
“Bully-Free Zone.” Judging took place at the New York State office building in Hauppauge on May 19th. Giuliana Grosso, Nicole Nowakowski and Jade Ung were the top three winners, respectively, in the Suffolk
County Grade 6-8 Division. Giuliana’s poster was also entered into the New York State School Bus Safety Poster Contest, held in Albany.

Ronald also noted that the common thread between all of the graduates is that they have overcome obstacles and are now leaving a familiar, safe place that has prepared them to enter a world of challenges. Valedictorian Winnie Wong imparted that “passion is just as important as knowledge,” and that “the only person I have to impress is myself.” She also encouraged her peers to find their own definition of success. In her address, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly said the graduates have brought great pride to the district with their myriad of accomplishments and thanked the community, Board of Education and faculty for their commitment to education. Her advice to the students was that “life is what you make of it” and encouraged them to set goals, stay focused, learn from mistakes and reflect. Board President Lucy Campasano told the graduates that the community and district is “indebted” to them. “You
are the reason we strive to be better,” she said. In her closing remarks, Dr. Vassallo noted that the Class of 2015 has not only brought great joy to the community, but that the graduates are wellprepared to make their way in the world. In celebration of the occasion, the concert choir played a “Senior Medley,” arranged by teacher Joseph Barone, including melodies from Ain’t it Fun, Hakuna Matata and Why We Tell the Story. As a tradition, the community joined the band and choir which performed Like an Eagle. The graduates were then called one by one to receive their diplomas and to become alumni of West Babylon School District. The district extends its best wishes for success to the Class of 2015.

Reynolds also said she was amazed by the hard work performed by the students. “Your hard work helps the community in such positive ways.” Zemba pointed out that during the school year the students made Valentines Day cards for East Neck Nursing Home residents, collected toys for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation,
made meal tray cards for the Northport VA Medical Center, collected money for UNICEF, made purple ribbon pins for teachers on P.S. I Love You Day, created and sold pins for Autism Speaks, designed placemats for the Babylon Methodist Church dinner and participated in the Clean the Beach Project at Venetian Shores in Babylon. In addition, JoLynn and Leanne spent their lunch period every Wednesday assisting students during their social skills class.

It was an evening of excitement and pride as the West Babylon Senior High School graduating Class of 2015 marched onto the junior high school field to the playing of Pomp and Circumstance by the high school band and to the applause of parents and family. but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as
meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities.
