bittersweet, students will never leave behind the memories their school had instilled in them. “Today we will leave Babylon High School behind and take our first step into the future,” she said. “No matter what we make of the rest of our lives, we will always have our strong beginnings here.” “Today, the day we graduate high school, is a day worth smiling for,” stated Delaney. “Smile because it’s over, smile because it happened, smile just because. High school provides a framework everyone needs to be successful in life. In 10 to 20 years, when you look back on your life, you’ll realize how lucky you were to go to school here.” “You are special, and you are unique,” Mr. Bencivenga said. “I am confident you will succeed and do great things when you leave Babylon. I believe your experiences will bring you a unique perspective and inner strength that will set you apart from others as you go through life. Power To Learn Students of West Babylon Junior High School recently took part in a Cablevision Power To Learn program that focused on the effects of cyberbullying. Administrators, members of the Board of Education, representatives from Cablevision and Sen. Phil Boyle attended the Power To Learn presentation in which members of the school’s Mock Trial team and S.O.S. (Stories of Substance) group performed skits that depicted scenes of cyberbullying, bringing a greater awareness of the problem to students and offering them ways to be “upstanders” as opposed to bystanders. “When we use the Internet, the world is limitless,” Sen. Boyle said in his address to the young audience. “We can discover things beyond our imagination, but there is a true danger involved because what you put out there can hurt other people. I encourage you all to use the Internet for good and be mindful of your actions.”

In what made for a joyous and celebratory event, family members, friends and educators packed Babylon High School’s Coach Williams Memorial Field for the Class of 2013 commencement ceremony on June 22nd. Following members of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Color Guard, the American Celtic Pipe Band and high school administrators and teachers, soon-to-be graduates were aglow with smiles as they proceeded to their seats on the field. The ceremony began with opening remarks from Assistant Principal Steven Goldberg, as well as a salute to the flag by Senior Class President Genevieve Gravina and Vice President Alex Malhas. Genevieve and Student Council President Carolanne Murphy offered reflective speeches to their classmates, while Principal Al Cirone and Mr. Goldberg offered words of praise for students’ successes and optimism for their future. Students in Lisa DeGennaro’s first-grade class at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently held an author’s tea for their parents. During the presentation, each of the young authors and illustrators of “DeGennaro’s Publishing House” took to the podium to read a personal poem about themselves and then shared with the audience a “chapter” from a book they had created in class. These projects demonstrated the students’ knowledge of the elements of a book, including a table of contents, chapters, a glossary, diagrams, bold words and a “fun facts” page. After their presentations, the students gave their poems and books to their parents. It was a wonderful opportunity for the firstgraders to demonstrate their literary growth throughout the year and their ability to speak at the podium.

Following four years, 728 school days, 5,096 school hours and 305,760 school minutes, the 402 members of the North Babylon High School Class of 2013 gathered together one final time as a class on June 22nd to celebrate the school’s annual commencement exercises. Members of the Board of Education, administration, teachers, special guests, parents and friends surrounded the students as they prepared to collect their high school diplomas and move their tassels from left to right. With the sun shining down on the graduates, the students listened as they received words of advice from Town of Babylon Supervisor and NBHS alumnus Richard Schaffer, Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek, Principal Raymond A. Williams, and social studies teacher and faculty speaker Erin Casserly. The students also reminisced on days gone by and the years to come as valedictorian Brian Manzo, salutatorian Katherine Schneider and senior class presidents Ashley Levine and Aubree Surrency delivered their addresses. “Your high school graduation is a pivotal moment because it is both a beginning and an end,” remarked Mrs. Godek. “High school’s been a time for learning, developing character, fostering social awareness and strengthening friendships. What you have learned has been important, but what have you learned about yourself?” Added Mr. Williams, “Wisdom, courage and compassion together are the foundations for a good and productive life. Remember, you will be judged not on whether you took the best from the world, but whether you gave your best to the world.” Advised Ms. Casserly, who was speaking on the 20th anniversary of her own graduation from NBHS, “Do what you love, pursue your dreams and don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do with your life. Go out into the world and do what you love.” Following the presentation of diplomas and the official graduation oath, the NBHS Class of 2013 tossed their caps into the air and celebrated the culmination of four years of hard work.

Thirty-eight students of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District demonstrated their love of reading by participating in the Read To Succeed program, coordinated by school librarian Gwendalyn McHugh.
The program encourages students in grades K-6 to further develop their love of reading by rewarding those who have completed six hours of recreational reading with a ticket to Six Flags Great Adventure, to be used during the summer months.

An array of emotions was evident during this year’s moving up ceremony for the sixth-grade class at Babylon Memorial Grade School. As the students entered the auditorium at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, they were excited to begin the next chapter in their educational journey but could not help reminiscing about the years spent at the Grade School.
