The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its official opening on July 6th. William K. Vanderbilt II - great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad and shipping magnate - died in 1944. His wife Rosamund continued to live in the Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport until her death in 1947. He realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum for what he called “the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.” That wish prompted him to leave his estate, and a trust fund to finance its operation, to Suffolk County. The county opened the museum to the public on July 6th, 1950. The anniversary coincides with Arcadia Publishing’s release of Eagle’s Nest: The William K. As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently congratulated graduates of the Parent Leadership Initiative of the Town of Babylon at a commencement ceremony at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. The Parent Leadership

Initiative (PLI) course teaches parents and community leaders the skills and training necessary to better their community through civic engagement. Councilwoman Gordon, who serves on the Town’s PLI Steering Committee,

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. The criteria for the scholarships is simple: 1. The scholar is looking

to attend college. 2. The scholar must complete a 250 word essay on “The funniest thing they ever did” or “The funniest thing they have ever seen” 3. Two must participate in high school sports, one from Women’s Track, and one from Women’s Soccer. 4. The third scholarship is offered to a male or female who completes the writing component only. “These students were able to show that they have what it takes to be a high school athlete, but also have a softer side and write about something funny. We also shared a smile. Smiling is one of the most enjoyable and contagious things, and they don’t

come as often anymore, but these helped,” said Brittney’s dad, Tom, at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Brittney Walsh Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $10,000 in the past three years. Brittney’s mom Cheryl has made it “a personal goal to ensure that a minimum award of $2,500 is given annually to help these students’ future, not only to help with college costs, but to help remind them to make smart choices and not to drink and drive.” For more information or on how to donate, visit www.smile14.org.

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to attend the awards presentation at the 26th Annual BACCA Juried Art Show, which was held at the Old Town Hall. The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. This particular art exhibition involved a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, portraits, mixed media, drawing, watercolors, and pastels. All of the pieces were elegantly displayed throughout the Old Town

“Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.

Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-yearold daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt.
