Free Senior Medical ID Card Program

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso (R – Massapequa Park), in partnership with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, is holding a FREE Senior Medical ID Card program on Wednesday, June 26th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the

West Babylon Public Library, 211 NY-109 West Babylon. The program is free and open to Suffolk County residents 50 years old and older.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Medical ID Cards assist seniors or those with medical

The Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate

The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is

a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will

be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood

cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

Winters Bros. Makes Donation To Lindenhurst Tree Project

Winter Bros. Waste Systems, of West Babylon, recently made an $8,500.00 donation to the Village of Lindenhurst for the planting of new trees along South Wellwood Avenue, through the heart of the Lindenhurst Downtown Business District, from Gates Avenue to Hoffman Avenue.

Earlier this year, the Village began a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety on Wellwood Avenue, including the installation of pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalk bulbouts and median extensions, repaving and curbing of the road, and restriping and reangling of parking spaces.

As part of this “facelift”, the Village had to remove the trees that adorned our southern Downtown. Many of those trees, however, were in failing health, or of a variety with height and root-growth that threatened the integrity and safety of our sidewalks and utility wires.

Therefore, in an effort to replant trees that would benefit the Village in longevity -- ones that will not become too large and cause future damage, and ones that are not of an invasive species – the Village consulted with a number of horticultural experts, as well as the Long Island Invasive Special Management Area (LIISMA), and garnered input

from valued members of the community, before choosing two varieties to plant in our Lindenhurst Downtown – the Kwanzan Cherry Tree & the Snow Goose Flowering Cherry Tree.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “The Village of Lindenhurst

extends its grateful thanks to Winter Bros. Waste Systems for this very generous donation towards the beautification of our Downtown. We appreciate their partnership in our commitment to the planting, preserving, and caring of trees in our community.”

Belmont’s Battleship Bot Challenge

BELMONT’S BATTLESHIP BOT CHALLENGE - Students at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District tried their hand at a reimagined and updated version of the classic boardgame Battleship. During a Makerspace lesson on June 7 with library media specialist Jennifer Olsen, students worked in teams for the Battleship Robot Challenge. Using their small robots –BlueBots and Dash – students worked together to code their bots to move across the board to the different squares and sink their opponents’ battleships.
