Paddling for Poker will also commence the same day. This event is open to all paddle boarders and kayakers, who should meet at 2 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West Avenue, Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats at 3 p.m. to pick up a poker card at each boat. These cards will make up their poker hand. The best hand wins, and will be presented at the Awards Dinner. Kayak rentals are available. Those who raise $200 or more will not be charged for a two-hour kayak rental or the Awards Dinner.

An Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club will close the two-day event.

Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m., followed by an Italian buffet at 6 p.m.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. is pleased to announce its annual Regatta and Awards dinner which will take place over two days: on June 18th at the Oyster Bay Marine Center and on June 20th at the Sagamore Yacht Club, both in Oyster Bay. Proceeds will benefit services offered by ADRC and help fund local Alzheimer’s research and support.

The Regatta events will begin with The Classics on Thursday, June 18th, 2015 at the Oyster Bay Marine Center, 5 Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay, starting at 5 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit both ADRC and Oakcliff Sailing. Non-members of Oakcliff Sailing will have the opportunity to crew on vintage wooden yachts, the oldest one dating back to 1903. In order to participate, non-members must raise a minimum of $150.

The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is holding its first annual golf outing on Friday, June 26th, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club at 105 Clancy Road in Manorville. Guests will enjoy this beautiful and challenging course with a barbeque lunch and full dinner after play.

This is the second annual golf outing to support The Coalition’s efforts to help the victims of bullying and their families. This event is very important because it make it possible to assist in paying for programs and services provided to help children and their families cope with and recover from instances of bullying. All of this is made possible by successful events, sponsorships and community support.

Simmer Down, Society Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day.

What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied?

We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint.

Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time.

Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless.

The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you.

Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer.

Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - “All the world’s a stage” and once again, Saints Cyril and Methodius students were invited to participate in the annual Long Island Student Shakespeare Festival and as per usual, the students did a wonderful job of representing SSCM! Heartfelt congratulations and kudos to each of the students who worked tirelessly to put together an incredible display of drama and tragedy that would have made the Bard of Avalon himself proud.

Spring Soiree Models from Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based not-for-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, recently walked the runway in the latest styles as part of ACLD’s 2015 Spring

Soiree at The Woodlands in Woodbury.

Of the 12 women and six men who strolled the Soiree runway, 14 have developmental disabilities and receive support from ACLD. “Our individuals and their needs are as unique as the fashions they wear today,” said John J. Genova, Treasurer of ACLD’s Board of Trustees, and one of

those who escorted models on the runway. “ACLD’s job is to ensure we meet those needs and be prepared to support their dreams and aspirations for tomorrow.”

Nearly 250 people were on-hand to enjoy lunch as the models showed off the latest fashions from Carlisle Collection, Flair Designer Boutique and Men’s Wearhouse. Hair design for the models was

provided by Cactus Salon.

With ticket and auction sales, plus the support of several vendors who gave guests the opportunity to shop for a wide range of gift items, proceeds from the Spring Soiree will help ACLD carry out its mission of providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to pursue enviable lives, increase their independence and

improve the quality of their lives within the community.

“Our leadership does not know the words ‘no,’ ‘can’t,’ or ‘that’s just the way it is,’” said Megan Gardner, Secretary of ACLD’s Board of Trustees, who was among the models during the show. “When it comes to those we work with, we can do more and we can do better.”

Hockey Star Honored

Chemically Inclined North Babylon High School student Emily Michele was selected by the American Chemical Society as a recipient of its Long Island Subsection’s award for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement in High School Chemistry.

Michele’s chemistry teacher, Lindsey Loscalzo, nominated the standout

student for the award, saying that “she was a clear candidate from the start, is very intelligent and has a remarkable work ethic.” As a result of the prestigious award, Michele is now a part of the world’s largest scientific community, which has been changing the face of chemistry for more than 25 years.

Part of the American Chemical Society’s Mission Statement is to promote excellence in science education and community outreach, of which the hope is to improve lives through chemistry.

“I believe if Emily sticks with chemistry, she will do exactly that,” Loscalzo said.

Relay For Life

Cassie Zangerle, a senior at North Babylon High School, fulfilled her threeyear wish to bring Relay to her hometown.

The first ever Relay for Life in North Babylon kicked-off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 6th, and ended at 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 7th.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life event is a life-changing experience that gave everyone in attendance a

chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer. There was a special reception for survivors and caregivers, an opening ceremony, a luminary ceremony and a closing ceremony. Each was marked with a special lap.

In between, there were fun laps, musical performances, a DJ playing tunes to keep the walkers motivated, inspiration stories from survivors and

so much more.

Cassie’s mom, Joanie Zangerle, was her CoChair of the event and was thrilled to announce before the last lap that the Relay had raised over $8,000 in six short weeks.

They are grateful for all the local businesses who donated food and supplies, everyone who helped make the event a success and to all their participants.

Golden Girls Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to participate in a very special Girl Scout Gold Award ceremony. This milestone event which bestowed the award to scores of Girl Scouts from across Suffolk County, took place at the beautiful Captain Bill’s waterfront restaurant.

Joining with Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, McCaffrey congratulated the contingent of Gold Award recipients from the 14th Legislative District. These young ladies were all

smiles, and understandably so, as this day marked the culmination of their many years of hard work and dedication on their path to the distinguished award.
