Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Honor More Than 40 Girl Scouts At Annual Gold Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County honored 42 Girl Scouts at its annual Gold Award Dinner & Ceremony on May 30, 2024. The event was held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and the preeminent leadership award for high school girls. Gold Award Girl Scouts address issues they’re passionate about by planning and implementing a project that produces lasting change in their communities and beyond.

Three North Babylon Firefighters Honored For 50 Years Of Service

Elected officials from the Town of Babylon recently congratulated Peter Alt, Daniel Caroleo & Paul Caroleo for their dedicated service to the North Babylon Fire Co.

For the past 50 years, these three men have dedicated themselves to protecting the lives and property of their community. Through thick and thin, through

triumphs and tragedies, they have stood steadfast in their commitment to serve and protect, no matter the cost. Deputy Supervisor & Councilman Tony Martinez said “Their dedication is a deep sense of duty and responsibility to the community they love. They do not seek recognition or praise for their actions; they simply do what needs to be done

because they believe in the importance of community”

Supervisor Rich Schaffer said, “As we celebrate their 50 years of service, let us take a moment to honor and appreciate the incredible contribution these men have made to the North Babylon community. Their legacy will continue to inspire future

generations to strive for excellence, selflessness, and a deep commitment to the greater good.”

Councilman Terence McSweeney who also chairs public safety for the town said, “In a world where selfishness and indifference seem to be on the rise, the example set by these three men serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of committed

service. Their dedication and sacrifice have not only kept their community safe, but have also inspired others to follow in their footsteps and give back to their communities in meaningful ways.”

Supervisor Schaffer acknowledged knowing all 3 men for many years adding “Committed service is not just about fulfilling a job requirement

– it is about embodying the values of duty, honor, and sacrifice in everything we do. These three men have shown us that true greatness lies in serving others with humility and integrity and that through our actions, we can make a lasting impression on generations of firefighters to come.”

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate

community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

“For more than three decades, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has been providing full and trouble-free access to critical services,” Donnelly said. “I am glad to see their great professional community outreach program continue and hope that every senior resident will make full use of it.”

Grant Helps Garden Club Grow

Gayle Estrada, a North Babylon High School chemistry teacher and adviser of the new Garden Club, has been awarded an Agriculture in the Classroom grant for $2,997 for the school’s garden thanks to Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The goal of the grant is to increase awareness of local agricultural production in Suffolk County, and to strengthen the connection students have with healthy, fresh, local foods. The grant money will help to fund an indoor grow light system allowing food crops and culinary herbs to be grown in the winter, edible fruit trees and bushes, and a tumbling compost bin to help aid in the district’s continuing compost and recycling efforts.

“I started the Garden Club this year to provide students with hands-on opportunities to connect with nature, learn about sustainable food production and develop valuable life skills,” said Ms. Estrada. On average, the club consists of 15 students who meet once a week after school for an hour and have been learning how to plant, harvest and maintain the garden of food crops and native plants.

Garden Club members are responsible for maintaining the garden as are the students in the career development program. Those students will harvest during the summer months as they are in session all year round. “My goal is to expand to reach all students in the school focusing first on the food chemistry, culinary, health, and nutrition classes with use of the garden’s harvest to teach with cooking demonstrations and tastings. Additionally, students will learn how to give back and help the community by donating the harvest to the food pantry at high school,” Estrada explained. Future goals include having the elementary and middle schools visit to help harvest and support their science learning goals.

Art Students Beautify Gilgo Beach Tunnel

On May 17, North Babylon High School’s National Art Honor Society students participated in a mural painting and restoration project in the tunnel under Ocean Parkway at Gilgo Beach. This project was sponsored by the Town of Babylon Parks Department and Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and included students and teachers from Amityville, Babylon, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, North Babylon, West Babylon and Wyandanch high schools. North Babylon students who participated in the painting were: Marguel Allen, Joseph Bacchi, Anaya Cruz, George Folise, Kristina Kasenchak, Mairead Matthews, Emily Miccio and Peyton Silvestri. They restored a 20-year-old mural and painted two original designs that were created by North Babylon High School students Peyton Silvestri and Angela Shi.
