In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to be discharged. However,

these scenarios could be quite different. A person’s survival rate increases by more than double when CPR is initiated immediately. In situations where CPR and defibrillation is provided within five to seven minutes, the survival rate is as high as 35-40 percent. The bystander can no longer be the bystander; he or she must become the FIRST RESPONDER! To acknowledge CPR & AED week, CPR123 is offering the community FREE “Hands Only CPR” and Healthy Living Classes throughout the month! Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

Would you know what to do if you witnessed a cardiac emergency? A recent survey suggests that 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. In honor of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1st7th, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR by watching a short video by visiting www.heart.org/ HandsOnlyCPR. Cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Each year, over 326,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests

occur in the U.S. and only 10 percent of outof-hospital cardiac arrest victims survive. According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least

100 compressions per minute. To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” By empowering bystanders to perform Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association works to strengthen the chain of survival – a five-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The critical bystander links for the chain of survival include calling 9-1-1, early CPR and early defibrillation. Along the banks of the lagoon wreathed with arrowhead, spiker rush, pickerel weed and giant bullrush, I rest with book in hand and ponder my placid environs.

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens. A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. This serene, halcyon atmosphere mingled with refreshing breezes account for the therapeutic elixir, easing the tensions and stresses of the day. All this augments happiness and contentment in life and emphasizes the sentiment that “Life Is Extraordinary.”

Exploratory scientific learning is starting early at Babylon Elementary School as students are engaging in inquiry based, hands-on projects within the building’s new science lab. The space, which was previously occupied by a class, was transformed this winter with the guidance of first-grade teacher Bernadette Forthmuller and the PTA. While open to all grade levels, the first-grade teachers are collaborating regularly to plan experiments tied to enhance classroom curriculum and challenge students to build upon their critical thinking skills. Recent projects had students explore properties of matter and observe and research hermit crabs. Experiments often integrate technology and afford the students the opportunity to use the lab’s Google Chromebooks.

RIBBON CUTTING - On May 26th, the Village of Babylon held an official ribbon cutting ceremony, welcoming Movement Speaks Studio of Dance to the neighborhood. FBI Program Qualiﬁer Margaret McKeever, a freshman at North Babylon High School in the North Babylon School District, has been selected to attend a Youth Leadership Program hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates (FBINAA), a premier law enforcement training agency. The FBINAA hosts its prestigious weeklong program annually.

McKeever is one of just two students selected within the New York Eastern Canada chapter, and one of only 60 selected worldwide. There are a number of criteria McKeever needed to meet in order to qualify: the program is open to students 14-16 years old, who have demonstrated high academic standards and good citizenship, and who are of high moral character. The student must also be nominated

by a FBINAA graduate in good standing. McKeever interviewed with chapter representatives and a selection committee before the FBINAA and program coordinator decided to offer her the opportunity of a lifetime. McKeever will attend the 17th session of the FBINAA Youth Leadership Program on June 13th-20th in Quantico, Virginia.

HONORING HEROES - Students from Saints Cyril

and Methodius Elementary School marched in Deer Park’s Memorial Day Parade, organized by the Edward K. Peisker Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 5348 in Deer Park.
