Prom Night Prep Tips For Parents Helping Teens give alcohol to anyone who is under 21.

Prom is a teenage rite of passage.

Prom night provides one more exciting adventure in a school experience that likely started with preschool jitters and will soon culminate with graduates receiving their high school diplomas.

Set An Example By Keeping Calm Prom planning can be stressful. Various details have to come together on the big day. Even though they may appear to be young adults, teens still may have meltdowns or impulse control issues when things don’t go their way. Set an example by reacting to obstacles calmly and finding workarounds.

Prom night planning reaches a fever pitch a few weeks before the big event.

A significant amount of time and money are involved in making prom a night to remember. While teens may be focused on fashion and fun, parents may be wondering what they can do to steer their sons and daughters in the right direction.

Here are some pointers to consider as families prepare for prom.

Set A Budget The pandemic has affected supply chains and has contributed to increased prices on all types of consumer goods, so you may find that prom attire and accessories will cost more this year. Figure out what you can afford to contribute to the prom, and ask your teenager to pitch in. If your child is footing some of the bill, there may be a greater willingness to corral spending. One way to save money is to rent a gown/tuxedo rather than

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services non-profit organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island. They have been helping others for 93 years!

Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic Priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn, who was looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. He opened a summer camp in Wading River that would eventually transition to a year-round residential treatment facility serving thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Little Flower has proudly adapted to address the unmet needs of those in their community by continuing to develop new programs and services. Their corporate headquarters and Suffolk County campus is still located in Wading River, however they also have a NYC campus, which is their flagship office in Brooklyn, along with ten residences across Queens and Long Island for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

The coalition will help fund critical services and offer events and resources directly in the communities served by Little Flower. Current members of the coalition include Amcor, Dime Community Bank, Fluent, Inc., Northwell Health and Tradeweb.

Volunteer Opportunities For Recent Grads

During the months between graduating high school and beginning college, or between getting a university degree and entering the workforce, graduates may want to explore the personal growth that comes from volunteerism.

Volunteering provides various benefits. Some of these rewards include networking with an entirely different group of people.

Volunteering also can help a person realize greater happiness by doing selfless acts for others, while they also can help one to realize a new passion. In the future, volunteering with an organization also may help with a student’s job search.

There are many arenas where young people can focus their volunteer efforts. Here are some ideas.

• Animal shelter: Animal shelters rely on volunteers to help with their operations. They can be a good fit for anyone with a passion for animals and animal rights activism.

• Public service sectors: AmeriCorp and Peace Corps have scores of opportunities for volunteers.

AmeriCorp focuses on domestic issues, while the PeaceCorp is a branch of the U.S. government that engages volunteers in international service work.

Community involvement, health

care, agriculture, homelessness, and combatting hunger are top priorities for these organizations.

• English as a second language: Volunteers can spend time abroad teaching English to students. Others may want to volunteer domestically by helping non-English-speaking individuals improve their language skills.

• Community government: A person may choose to sit on the board of a school, a neighborhood housing association, or even explore volunteerism with a township municipal office. This will provide valuable hands-on experience and may help one lend a voice to issues that affect his or her living situation.

• Religious groups: Churches, synagogues and mosques may have volunteer opportunities focused on community outreach or programs affiliated with local nonprofits.

• Conservation groups: Volunteers can work on conservation projects across the country. From wildlife management to trail restoration to invasive species eradication, there are a wide variety of conservationbased volunteering opportunities.

The Village of Babylon is the first of Babylon Township’s 11 hamlets to salute the Town of Babylon’s 150th Anniversary with a kick-off celebration that took place on Sunday, May 22. The Village of Babylon’s “Ole Times Day,” events began at noon and continued until 5 p.m. It all took place within the Village Hall municipal parking lot, adjacent to the Village Museum at 117 W. Main St. in Babylon.

Highlights of the Day in “Babylon Village... Where History is Made” included: A roaring 20s theme

with everyone encouraged to dress the part. Live bands played Jazz, Blues, and Rock and Roll.

There was an Oldfashioned lemonade stand.

The Babylon Village Railroad history timeline from 1867 to 1967 was held inside at the Babylon Village History Museum.

Ole Times day games were sponsored by the Conklin House, a home on the national register and a cultural center for all.

Marconi Shed where the first wireless transmission was made in Babylon Village to a ship at sea.

“Then and Now” art exhibition presented by the Babylon Village Arts Council.

Village and Town of Babylon dignitaries and other local officials participated in the day’s events.

Each community in the Town of Babylon will hold an event throughout the upcoming year to celebrate their unique history as part of the Town of Babylon, culminating with a final celebration on October 2 by each community and a town-wide parade.

FERRARO’S LIQUORS - Proprietors of Ferraro’s Liquor Store in Babylon Village, Connie and Kevin, donated cases of champagne for the celebratory toast.

WEST BABYLON JUNIOR NAMED ROGER REES FINALIST - West Babylon Senior High School junior Ronan Flynn has been named one of the top 50 finalists for the Roger Rees Awards, a competition that recognizes excellence in musical theater productions in high schools. Flynn was chosen for his portrayal of Lumiere in “Beauty and the Beast” this past February. Flynn, along with 25 other high school females and 24 males, will attend coaching sessions in New York City with Broadway producers, casting and musical directors in to prepare material.
