Suffolk Half Marathons Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other officials announced Tuesday that the county’s half marathon has been designated as international and national championships for the intellectually disabled. The Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon and newly added 5K will take place October 30th, starting and ending in the village of Patchogue. “We are pleased that our race will serve as an opportunity for all athletes to demonstrate their skills,” County Executive Bellone said. “An intellectual disability should never be a barrier to those wanting to enjoy participating in sports. We are thrilled that we will serve as

a host to these two championships.” The International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability, known as INAS, has sanctioned the Suffolk Half Marathon as an international championship, and Athletes Without Limits has designated the race as its first-ever national championship. Barry Holman, chairman of the board for Athletes Without Limits, said, “Athletes Without Limits and INAS are honored and excited to award the Suffolk County Half Marathon the US National Championship for athletes with an intellectual disability. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Students and staff throughout North Babylon High School welcomed the ALS Ride for Life group during its journey from Riverhead to Manhattan. The nonprofit organization raises awareness and funds to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The event, organized by the high school’s Leader’s Club under the direction of adviser Patricia Slozek, featured motivational student performances to the delight of the organization’s members. District staff members and students then joined Ride for Life for a walk through the community. The group expressed its sincerest gratitude for the high school’s remarkable fundraising efforts.

Fighting ALS Faculty and staff dressed in orange and black, held up their signs of support as they celebrated the arrival of the ALS Ride for Life team when they stopped at Babylon Memorial Grade School and Babylon Junior-Senior High School on May 17th. The 19th annual Ride for Life, led by Christopher Pendergast, occurs each

May to celebrate National ALS Awareness Month. Beginning in Riverhead on May 9th, Pendergast and his team spend 12 days traveling across Long Island and into Manhattan to raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease. This annual event encourages students to

take action in the face of adversity. At Babylon Memorial Grade School, students raised money with a walkathon and “Put ALS to Sleep” pajama day. Together with Babylon Junior-Senior High School, the district raised more than $1,000 to support families who are afflicted with this debilitating disease.

Bravo!” This year’s race will start and end in the village of Patchogue, and culminate in the Freedom Fest, which will feature music, food and drinks produced here in Suffolk County.

Taking Steps Continued From 14 in high school Rebecca started to develop severe abdominal pain in her lower right side. After her first colonoscopy, Rebecca woke up to, “You have Crohn’s Disease... there are support groups for what you’re going through.” What she thought would be a quick fix turned into a life changing diagnosis. Within two months

of diagnosis, Rebecca dropped down to about 90 pounds; hair was thinning, on TPN, could not eat solid food, and was scheduled for surgery. “CCFA has been an incredible organization from the beginning of my IBD journey,” says Rebecca. “I attend yearly talks about uprising medications and technology in the IBD world and am connected through campus connects.

Since I was diagnosed, my family and friends have supported me in raising funds and have walked proudly with me at the Take Steps walk. I am proud to be the honoree this year for the CCFA and have aspirations to spread awareness and fundraise greater than any other year. I hope the money raised towards research

In 2016, NYSSMA, the New York State School Music Association, celebrates its 84th year as the largest state affiliate of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). NYSSMA’s mission is to advocate for and improve music education across New York State by promoting and producing

Two Babylon High School seniors, Maggie Higgins and Jillian Gaare negotiated their first art sale at the Babylon Village Arts Council Art by the Falls on May 21st. Owner of their art work is Mariano Anthony Patane from East Northport. When asked Mr. Patane commented that the girls showed a great deal of promise and wanted to use their work to inspire other young artists. The Babylon Village Arts Council’s Art Partnership program with the Babylon High School Art Department was developed to foster the love of art in the

next generation. Maggie Higgins and Chandler McMillan created works of arts with supplies provided by the Babylon Village Arts Council in the amount of $200 per student. Under the guidance of Cheryl Schweider, art teacher at Babylon High School, students learned time management skills ,budget constraints, and design options. To experience a real life art exhibit each participant exhibited their work at the 9th Annual Outdoor Art show entitled Art by the Falls on May 21st in Argyle Park which provided interaction with the public.

During the month of June, their work will be displayed at Astoria Bank as part of the Rotational Art Program. This program is funded through membership and donations. The Town of Babylon Youth Court spent a recent evening participating in a “mock trial,” where members of the Court deliberate over a legal dispute while audience members serve as a jury. The mock trial presentation - The People v. Adrian Vega - focused on the issue of Miranda rights, the theme for this year’s Law Day
