On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the Babylon Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Salon Protegé at 18 A Railroad Ave. Babylon. On hand to celebrate were owner Dolores Velásquez and her husband, family members, and staff. Also on hand for the celebration were Mayor Mary Adams, Leg. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Long Island Water Conference Hosts 36th Annual Drinking Water Tasting Contest

Public Encouraged To Taste, Vote And Learn About The Water Delivered To Their Homes

In honor of National Drinking Water Week, the Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) hosted its 36th annual drinking water tasting contest at Farmingdale State College from Tuesday, May 7 to Wednesday, May 8. 14 water providers from across Long Island vied for the title of best drinking water in Nassau County and Suffolk County, respectively.

“Our annual drinking water tasting contest is one of the most exciting times of year for us,” said LIWC Chairman Jason Belle. “It not only serves as a fun, friendly competition between our many water providers, but it affords us the opportunity to engage with the residents whom we serve and help them understand just how much work goes into

providing them with highquality water every day.”

More than 240 participants voted for their favorite tasting water and received exciting giveaways. In addition, LIWC representatives educated attendees on the water delivered to the homes and answered questions on the treatment methods maintaining Long Island’s high-quality drinking water.

This year’s winners were the Bayville Water Department for Nassau County and the Suffolk County Water Authority for Suffolk County. For emerging triumphant with the best tasting drinking water, these water providers hold onto the coveted trophy for a year and win bragging rights among their fellow providers. They will also

participate in the New York State Regional Metro Tap Water Taste Contest held in New York City in early August to compete for entry into the statewide contest held at the Great New York State Fair.

Kindergarteners Get Wildlife Lessons At Sunken Meadow State Park

Babylon Elementary School kindergarteners from Mrs. Ryczek, Ms. Geller, Mrs. Bell, and Mrs. Marinell’s classes recently took an educational field trip to the outdoor learning lab at Sunken Meadow State Park. Students experienced a hands-on lesson about various aquatic flora and fauna as well as their habitats. As students toured the beach, guides pointed out different aspects of the park,

including where animals make their homes, lay their eggs and live off of the land to survive. Back in their classrooms, the students created their own animal shelters and tested them against different forms of severe weather, such as wind, rain and extreme heat. The lessons served as a valuable introduction to beach habitats, and the important roles they play in the world’s ecosystem.

The Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) recently held a panel discussion on housing development and policy at the East Farmingdale Fire Department. The panel featured prominent voices on the topic, including Kevin Gremse, the Managing Director of the Grow America Fund; Gwen O’Shea, the President and CEO of the Community Development Corporation of LI (CDLI); and Kyle Strober, the Executive Director of the Association for a Better Long Island (ABLI).

Throughout the discussion, panelists, each a leader in their respective roles, offered their unique perspectives on the issue of housing on Long Island.

Kevin Gremse, with his extensive experience in economic and housing development services, explored the impacts of quality housing options and what has been done within the region and elsewhere to boost stock. Gwen O’Shea, an advocate for affordable and equitable housing, shared insights on CDLI’s efforts to increase housing

opportunities and projects they’re involved in. Kyle Strober, from an ABLI perspective, asserted the necessity for IDAs to advance housing development, drawing from his vast expertise on housing issues.

The event was a platform for experts to share their insights and allow local business leaders, government officials, and community members to connect and collaborate. Representatives from the Town of Babylon, including Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello, were in attendance.

The event marked the IDA’s first business summit of the year, illustrating its commitment to addressing the diverse topics affecting the town and surrounding areas. The discussions help underscore the importance of collaborative efforts and multidisciplinary
