For the ninth consecutive year, the students and staff at North Babylon High School set out to raise awareness and money to cure the powerful and fatal disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Organized by the high school’s Leader Club and its adviser Patricia Szlosek, the high school hosted a breakfast and morning send-off for Chris Pendergast and his organization Ride for Life on May 15th. The Ride for Life campaign is a nonprofit run by ALS patients and caregivers to raise money for research and awareness of the disease through an annual trek from the east end of Long Island to the borough of Manhattan. Architects, the Structural Engineers Association and the not-for-profit Arts Organization. The finished project, which will be approximately 40 feet by 18 feet by 15 feet and include the fifth-graders’ handiwork, will serve as the backdrop for this year’s summer arts events at Governors Island. After collecting more than 4,000 bottles, the two classes helped bring the firm’s “Head in the Clouds” pavilion design to life. Using mesh wire and netting, the students worked with the architects to weave in the recyclable materials and add bluecolored water for accents where appropriate. “This project served as a very visual reminder about the importance of helping the environment, in particular recycling,” stated Ms. Zwerlein, whose son, a former Babylon Memorial student, is a member of the firm. “With

our compact curriculum approach to teaching,” she continued, “we are always looking for ways to provide enrichment to our students, and with our 21st-century learning standards, a great deal of attention is paid toward learning collaboratively. This project provided both of those educational benefits.” As a special thank-you

for all of their hard work, students will receive a reusable filter water bottle.

As part of the grade level’s compact curriculum, and with an eye towards 21st century learning skills, Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-graders from Rayna Zwerlein’s and Chris Tordy’s classes recently received an enriching lesson on the environment and the importance of recycling. Working with Brooklynbased architecture firm Studio KCA, the students helped to create part of an outdoor pavilion made of 53,780 plastic bottles, the number of water bottles disposed of each hour in New York City. Out of the 200 designers who submitted proposals, Studio KCA was chosen to create this art pavilion on Governors Island based on their design/concept submission to the City of Dreams Competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects New York, the Committee for Emerging New York

Days To Remember I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reﬂection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,

still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shufﬂe. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

Allergy Awareness Week In an effort to increase awareness of various food allergies and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, Babylon Elementary School celebrated Food Allergy Awareness Week this May. During the week, the students learned about these health-related topics through literacybased activities, including sharing poems that contained information regarding healthy choices and the increasing need for global awareness of food allergies. In addition, a different healthy food theme was celebrated each day of the week, including Wear the Color of Your Favorite Fruit or Vegetable Day, Creative Homemade Snack Day, and even a poster contest that called for students to draw a picture combining their favorite fruit and vegetable in order to create a fun and

new food item. To drive home the message about the importance of eating a balanced meal, the highly popular Super Sprowtz puppet show and performing group visited the school. The assembly introduced students to a colorful and healthy cast of characters, including Colby Carrot, Erica Eggplant and Suzy Sweetpea. Throughout the show, the puppets explained the nutritional and developmental benefits of the vegetables highlighted and encouraged the students to become advocates for eating healthy. Hometown Hero Honored

On May 3rd, Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon was honored by the Town of Babylon City Employees Union Local 237 as a “Hometown Hero” for her accomplishments and service both here and abroad. The ceremony was held at Martin A. Kessler VFW Post 2912 in Wheatley Heights, where Councilwoman Gordon is a member. Several other local officials attended the event to show their appreciation for Councilwoman Gordon, including Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, and Town

Clerk Carol Quirk. Councilwoman Gordon is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves, where she has served proudly since 1984. In her nearly three decades of service, Councilwoman Gordon has been deployed to Germany as part of Operation Desert Storm, Guantanamo Bay, Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and most recently to Afghanistan in 2012. As a member of the Town Board, Councilwoman Gordon serves as the chairperson for the Town’s Veterans Advisory Committee and organizes the Wounded Warrior Ride to

help support injured service members. In addition to her military service and her role on the Town Board, Councilwoman Gordon works as a guidance counselor at Wilson Technical Center in Huntington and is also involved in numerous community organizations including the Parent Leadership Initiative of the Town of Babylon, the Reserve Officers Association, Women for Women International, the Western Suffolk Counselor’s Association, and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County.
