The Village of Babylon recently dedicated a new sign post in recognition of the efforts of Babylon American Legion Post 94. The dedication ceremony was held the evening of Monday, May 4th. The Post 94 Color Guard and

many members of Post 94, Auxiliary, and Sons of the Legion were in attendance. Mayor Ralph Scordino delivered the dedication address, expressing deep appreciation for the ongoing efforts of Post 94 to serve our veterans,

armed forces personnel, and the community as a whole. Particular mention was made of the amazing response effort mounted by Post 94 in the aftermath of Super-Storm Sandy.

Recognizing Veterans

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to visit Ms. Paragine’s 1st grade class at J.F.K. Elementary School. This spring, Ms. Paragine’s class crafted Easter egg decorations that were proudly displayed on Legislator McCaffrey’s office windows, which sparked his interest in visiting the young artists. In addition to thanking the class for their artwork, McCaffrey read One, a book which touched upon how everybody is different and why embracing diversity can enhance our lives. The reading of One acted as a segue to a discussion

on the topic of bullying in schools and how to stamp it out. “These young individuals have enough to deal with in these turbulent times,” said McCaffrey. “The last thing they need to deal with is fear and bullying in a place where they are supposed to be safe. I believe that if parents and educators instill values of tolerance and diversity in their children, our future will have much less cruelty and violence.” The West Babylon U.F.S.D. has been an innovative leader in the prevention of bullying. In its schools’ various clubs and organizations,

students have educated one another through bullying awareness weeks and related campaigns. This commitment to eradicating this societal blight demonstrates a growing public understanding of the issue and a very positive step in the right direction. “In the past, bullying has not received the attention that it truly deserved,” explained McCaffrey. “Today, we understand that the problem will not go away by ignoring it, and I have a lot of hope for the future generations, thanks in large part to West Babylon schools.”

Golf Outing Set On June 4th, Mercy Haven, Inc. will host its 16th Annual Golf Outing in an effort to raise critical funds for the agency which provides housing and support services to those who are homeless or living with mental illness. Empire National Bank Vice President and Branch Manager Dorothy Overton, who serves as Board Chair for Mercy Haven, emphasized Empire’s commitment to community issues like those addressed by Mercy Haven. “Everyone deserves safe and dignified housing,” says Overton. “Mercy Haven has been making it happen for some of Long Island’s most at-risk residents for 30 years.” She added, “The golf outing is a wonderful way to meet neighbors, network, and show support for one of the causes that makes Long Island a great

At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

Babylon School District students showcased their original research projects as they competed in this year’s Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. As a result of their entries, Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth-grader Ethan Schubart captured first place and Babylon High School junior Ryan Cosgro earned fourth place. Ethan’s project was titled “Do gas powered leaf blowers affect air quality?”

and Ryan’s project, “Determining the optimal conditions for biolipid production in Chlorella pyrendiosa,” worked to determine under what conditions photosynthetic Chlorella algae are best able to produce a biolipid that could then be processed into a novel type of biofuel and help reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Both students were awarded scholarship monies for their winning

entries. The contest is open to students’ grades 6-12 in school districts within the Town of Babylon that produced science projects focused on renewable energy, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative materials or anything to reduce global warming and environmental degradation.

Babylon High School student-musicians captured high praise as they showcased their talents during this year’s World Strides Heritage Performance Music Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia. Babylon High School’s Symphonic Winds and Jazz Band each earned a gold rating on their performance

along with two group trophies. They received the Festival Sweepstakes Instrumental Trophy, which is presented to the school represented by two instrumental groups who accumulated the highest number of points. Babylon also earned the Festival Spirit Award, which is presented to the group that best represented their

school and community by demonstrating cooperation and enthusiastic support of all festival activities. In addition to the group awards, Tyler Gumpel, guitarist in the Jazz Band, received a “Maestro” award. This award is given to individual students who display extraordinary musical ability and sensitivity.

It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it

took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

West Babylon Senior High School student Sage Chasen is the recipient of the Mayor E. Donald Conroy Scholarship totaling $10,000 for his community service and scholastic record. He will be honored at the awards dinner, being held at the Venetian Yacht Club on June 3rd. The goal of the Mayor E. Donald Conroy Scholarship is to recognize and award high school seniors and Babylon Village residents, who have demonstrated service to the community in the unselfish way exemplified by the former mayor. After service in World War

II, Conroy returned to Babylon to serve as a police officer, volunteer fire fighter and as chief of the Babylon Fire Department. He comforted the sick in hospitals, raised funds for hospice and volunteered his time to a myriad of community events and activities. His vision was to make Babylon a wonderful place to reside. During his tenure as mayor, Conroy expanded the Village pool, revitalized the train station, and erected the September 11th Memorial Garden, to name a few projects. Sage utilizes his passion for music to improve the environment and the lives

of the elderly. Through his a cappella group, a cappella Performers Opposing Pollution, Sage performs and spreads the message to reduce human footprints on the world by decreasing pollution. He also uses his instrumental skills through his organization, Piano for Patients, playing piano for residents in local nursing homes. Sage will be attending LeHigh University this fall, where he will pursue his studies in engineering and music production. The West Babylon School District congratulates Sage on this outstanding accomplishment.

New Superintendent

At its May 14th, 2015 meeting, the North Babylon Union Free School District Board of Education appointed Glen A. Eschbach as the district’s next superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2015. “Over the past several months, the Board has worked diligently to select the next superintendent of schools,” said Board of Education President Janet Meyerson. “We are pleased to have Mr. Eschbach join the North Babylon family and assist our district in continuing to prepare our students for the future. His dedication and enthusiasm for education are clear and are a strong representation of the type of leader we need.” Mr. Eschbach comes to the district with more than two decades of educational experience, the last eight of which he has worked as an assistant superintendent. He began his career as a

special education teacher before advancing to an administrative position in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. Since July 2012, he has served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and technology in the Hauppauge Union Free School District. “It is with great pride and excitement that I take on the role of superintendent of schools of the North Babylon Union Free School District,” said Mr. Eschbach. “The opportunity to work with such a dedicated Board of Education and district staff is an honor and a privilege. I look forward to building positive and meaningful relationships with the greater educational community.” In the late fall of 2014, the Board of Education began working with the professional recruitment team at Western Suffolk BOCES to cultivate and screen candidates for the district’s superintendency. The Board interviewed a number of finalists for the position before ultimately selecting Mr. Eschbach. His contract will run through June 30th, 2018. During his time

in Hauppauge, Mr. Eschbach was responsible for developing and implementing the district’s comprehensive long-term educational plan and designing and preparing districtwide performance profiles. He also led his administrative team in the development of curriculum, technological initiatives and performance-based assessments. Additionally, he took on a leadership role in the development of the district’s APPR plan and worked collaboratively with the assistant superintendent for personnel in the screening and hiring of all instructional staff. Mr. Eschbach was also a member of the TriState Consortium, an organization through which he played an integral role in several comprehensive educational reviews. Mr. Eschbach holds both a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a professional diploma in educational leadership from Stony Brook University, and a Master of Science in education from Dowling College.

Family & Children’s Association (FCA), one of Long Island’s oldest and largest human service agencies, is inviting Long Islanders to support their annual Summer Camp Appeal. For many families, the summer means free time, trips and camp for the kids. But, for the families served by FCA who are working one, two or even three minimum-wage jobs, the summer is difficult because they cannot afford quality childcare to keep their children safe. A summer spent alone,

in front of the TV, can lead to summer learning loss which hurts these children when summer ends and they return to school. FCA’s goal is to help 60 children by providing a $1,000 camp scholarship to families living below the federal poverty level. According to President/ CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “our wish is that all children can be protected and nourished through a summer camp experience that stimulates and challenges them academically, physically
