Stony Brook Children’s Hospital was presented with the Medical Visionary Award on Thursday, May 8th, at Make-A-Wish Suffolk County’s 20th Annual Bouquet Of Wishes Spring Dinner.

The event took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook and hosted over 800 guests. The Foundation presented this award to Stony Brook Children’s for the institution’s meritorious leadership in advanced and innovative pediatric specialty care.

“It is an honor to receive the Medical Visionary Award from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County,” said Margaret M. McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Physicianin-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “At Stony Brook Children’s we value our partnerships with organizations like Make-A-Wish that help us to care for all the needs of the sickest children.

It is an organization that does an extraordinary job granting wishes to so many of our pediatric patients.”

“Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is Make-A-Wish Suffolk County’s largest referral source for wish children,” said Karine Hollander, President and CEO, Make-AWish Suffolk County.

“We see firsthand the results of the treatment Stony Brook provides; enhancing children’s health both physically and emotionally.

Together, we work in partnership to heal a child’s spirit.”

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock.

After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago.

But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule.

Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it.

And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey.

“Knowing that I had this wish gave me something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone.

Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to do there, and I can’t wait to eat the food!”

Scholarship Winners During the town’s annual Earth Day celebration in early May, six Babylon High School students were named winners in this year’s Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest, sponsored by

Covanta Energy.

The contest is open to students in any Town of Babylon school who have worked on projects related to sustainability and environmental solutions. Although this

was Babylon’s first time entering the contest, the high school students claimed the top three awards, and science research teacher Claire Birone was presented with an official proclamation

During the event, sophomore Jack Corcoran won third place and a $500 scholarship for his project, “The effects of

The bountiful harvest from the organic garden is donated each year to a local food pantry.

Volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Team Works (CTW) initiative will work with the Vanderbilt’s own volunteer gardeners. In the past two years, the firm’s volunteers have expanded the vegetable garden and, with a corporate grant, have installed an advanced drip-irrigation system that has increased the yield per plot.

CTW is Goldman Sachs’ global initiative that allows the firm’s employees one day off each year to volunteer in team-based projects coordinated with local nonprofit organizations.

In 2013, more than 25,000 volunteers from 50 offices around the world partnered with over 900 nonprofit organizations on a diverse array of community service projects.

The 43-acre estate was built in the early twentieth century by William K. Vanderbilt II, great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad and builder of Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate includes a spectacular, 24-room, Spanish-Revival style mansion. The museum complex includes a marine museum as well as natural-history, ethnographic-artifact and animal-habitat galleries, and the newly renovated, state-of-theart Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium.

Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m.

event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support.

Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders.

An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band.

This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100.

(ADRC) will host its 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Presenting sponsors for the event are the Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center.

Although there is no entry fee, all registrants are encouraged to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Once again, Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, will be in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 World Champion and 1992 America’s Cup winner.

Additionally, in her third of four Cups, she was CEO and Captain of America True, the only woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team.

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has received a $150,000 competitive grant from the New York State Department of Health/ AIDS Institute to launch a new program for Long Islanders with HIV/AIDS who also struggle with substance use disorders and/or other mental health issues.

Called Positive Connections, the program will ensure that local residents living with HIV/ AIDS have full access to regular behavioral health screenings, facilitated entry into addiction and mental health treatment and ongoing psychoeducational support designed to promote treatment adherence, sexual/substance abuse

risk reduction and optimal physical and mental health.

“In the midst of Long Island’s opiate crisis, we are seeing a growing generation of young substance users who lack cultural and personal knowledge of HIV/AIDS and it’s risk factors,” said LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “These are folks who were in diapers during

the height of the AIDS crisis and aren’t likely to be reached by traditional AIDS service providers,” he added. “We, of course, thank the AIDS Institute for funding this important initiative as we work to engage young opiate users.”

One of Long Island’s oldest nonprofits, LICADD offers school-based prevention education

programs and a wide range of communitybased services to families impacted by addiction.

The agency’s specialty programs include a medically supervised overdose prevention program, a mentoring program for children of prisoners, an E-Therapy initiative offering relapse prevention via secure video conferencing, and Long

Island’s largest Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Positive Connections will operate out of LICADD’s offices conveniently located in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead.

Inside Albany North Babylon High School junior Megan Haggerty has been selected to participate in the Student Inside of Albany Conference. Selected by the League of Women Voters of Huntington for the all-expenses-paid trip, Megan will spend four days in Albany beginning May 18th.

afforded the opportunity to observe Assembly and Senate sessions and to shadow both their assembly members and senators.

“I’m so excited about this amazing opportunity,” said Megan. “I can’t wait to shadow members of the state congress and learn how policy is made.” To be selected, Megan had to complete an application and write an essay.

First-grade students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in West Babylon are learning about respect and the acceptance of others’ differences. As a culminating activity, Dayna Troisi and Danielle Notaro from Hofstra University’s Club Limbitless visited the students. This special organization raises funds for the Amputee Coalition for America and A Leg to Stand On in order to provide free corrective surgery, prosthetic and orthopedic devices, mobility aids and rehabilitation to children with limb differences.

Troisi, club president and a congenital amputee, showed the students her prosthesis. Troisi and

Notaro entertained the students with physically challenged puppets to teach the students about being physically challenged. The guests also read books about friendships that celebrate differences and similarities and led a discussion about the subject matter. The highlight of the activity, however, was when Troisi sang “Let It Go,” from the Disney movie “Frozen,” honing in on the lesson about being different.

First-grade teacher Donna Anselona-Troisi said, “These social skills need to be taught to children at a young age, thus making the world a more accepting and

The goal of Global Youth Service Day is to mobilize young people throughout the world to improve

their communities through service to others.

Established in 1988 as a campaign of Youth Service America, GYSD is the largest service event worldwide and addresses critical community issues through young people working together.

This year’s walk, chaired by Charvon Davis-Pierce, was dedicated to the late Linda Hart, founder of the Sisters of Greater Long Island.

Linda’s husband, Warren Hart, cut the ribbon to kick off the walk.

Linda Hart survived breast cancer for 19 years until she tragically succumbed to the disease in 2013.
