Invited guests gathered in the courtyard to hear each student share their special poem on the topic of Arbor Day, Earth Day or spring. Board Recognition

Babylon School District’s Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of many of the district’s studentathletes, elementary and secondary student-musicians as well as other achievements during its April 18th meeting. Haley Watt was recognized for receiving the Principal’s Leadership Award from the Suffolk County High School Principals Association. AllCounty students-musicians were recognized for their participation in the 2016

SCMEA Festival. Members of the varsity cheerleading team were honored for their season accomplishments, including winning the Suffolk County Cheer Championship, earning a bid for the New York State Cheer Championship and placing eighth in New York State. Wrestler Bryan Larsen was recognized for winning the Suffolk County Division II Wrestling Championship and earning a bid to the New York State Wrestling Championships.

Wrestler Brett Frole was honored for winning the Suffolk County Division II Wrestling Championship and earning a bid to the New York State Wrestling Championships, where he placed fourth. The Board of Education also accepted a donation of $200,000 from Babylon resident and philanthropist Theresa Santmann to help fund the district’s Project Lead The Way program in the 2016-2017 school year.

He has participated in solo and group shows at the School of Visual Arts, the Art League of Long Island, the Islip Art Museum, the Hillwood Gallery (Old Brookville, NY), several area libraries, the Conklin House, and the Babylon Citizens Council of the Arts. His work hangs in the permanent collection of the New York Institute of Technology. He has executed several mural commissions, including for the Bay Village Diner in Amityville. Shawn’s exploration of Celtic historical context and its spiritual influence on culture and religion have led him to the work he produces today. His passion for understanding the complexity of the Celtic knot led him to travel to Spain, France and Ireland, where he found a strong influence of Celtic culture on contemporary

art and society. Connection and unity are two underlying themes that Shawn discovered throughout the society and religion’s use of design language. These two concepts remain the idea and tone in all of Shawn’s work. His exploration of the historical role of Celtic knot imagery, its complexity, and its spiritual influence on culture and religion has lead to a deep fascination, and to discover a strong connection between Arabic, European and Asian design, all of which influenced, and in turn were strongly influenced by, Celtic culture. His most recent body of work, the layering of different cultural design languages along with the ornamental designs found throughout the world, creates an ethereal sense of space and rhythm within the picture plan.

A Buddy for Buddy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Stay tuned for the next installment: The Adventures of Buddy & Squeegee in an upcoming issue.

Special Speaker St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that Holocaust survivor, Werner Reich, spoke at their annual Day of Prayer on March 23rd. Mr. Reich has spoken in many different venues all over the country. His presentation includes a brief history of the Holocaust and his personal story and experiences from the Holocaust itself. Werner Reich spent over two years in captivity in Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Theresienstadt, Czechoslovakia. He is hopeful that his presentations will allow the next generation to realize “how evil can happen in the world when good people do nothing to prevent it.” When asked about the importance of Mr. Reich’s visit to St. John’s, Campus Minister Mr. Richard Costa stated: “We are surrounded today by a fear of the other. We are told those who are not like us are not welcome. Men like Werner Reich lived the horror of those thoughts turned to action. Walkway Dedicated Friends, family, and former colleagues of Ellen T. McVeety gathered at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Memorial last week to honor the longtime councilwoman who was instrumental in the original planning and development of the site. The pathway between Overlook and Cedar beaches that leads to the

memorial will now be called Ellen T. McVeety Way. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Councilman Lindsay Henry, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to reveal the sign displaying the new name of the pathway.

McVeety, who served as a Town councilwoman from 1999-2013, was honored for her years of public service and specifically for her significant role in working closely with 9/11 families to create the memorial. Supervisor Schaffer presented McVeety with an official Town proclamation to honor the special day.

Through the Distance Learning Program at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, educators have the ability to leverage learning from around the globe, bringing down the walls of the classroom and exposing students to a diverse array of educational opportunities. One such activity was SSCM’s participation in a series of Video Conferences with the Milwaukee Public Museum, during which students learned all about

“The Christmas Tree Ship” in their “Art of Storytelling” Series. Guided instruction from experts in a dynamic digital setting keeps kids engaged and entertained while learning lots and allows teachers to then return to the classroom with hands-on activities that bolster that learning. Each year, in line with this program, the Milwaukee Public Museum offers schools the opportunity to share projects created by students who have participated in their Video

Conferences. SSCM’s Fifth Grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their faraway instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially to those whose projects made it onto the museum wall!

Spare Change

Every year during Lent, Pre-K through 8th grade students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park participated in the Lenten Rice Bowls program, sponsored by Catholic Relief Services. Middle School

Community Helpers distribute cardboard “Rice Bowls” to the student body, offering them a wonderful opportunity to practice their Christian Lenten responsibility of giving alms to those in need. Students collect spare

change from parents and family and give of their own allowance or earnings. The money collected is sent to Catholic Relief Services, where funding is used to feed, clothe and shelter those in need around the world. SSCM students give big every year, of their own, and there’s no doubt about it, their giving changes lives throughout the world. If a student donates $1 a day during the 40 days of Lent, that $40 will provide one month of food for a family, two years worth of seeds for a farmer and three months of clean water for four families. As we come to the end of the Easter season, perhaps the generosity of children is a good reminder that Lent is not the only time when giving means the world to those in need.

Poem in Your Pocket In celebration of National Poetry Month, Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s English department hosted a Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 21st. Babylon students embraced their 21st century skills by using

the 4Cs – creativity, communication, collaborative and critical thinking – by analyzing and writing poetry in their classrooms. Throughout the day, classes gathered together in the library during their English periods to share

their favorite poems with their peers, either original works or a poem by one of their favorite authors. Students were invited to share a poem with the audience and all of the poems were displayed in pockets throughout the building.

Showing Skills

Babylon School District students from the JuniorSenior High School participated in the 34th annual New York Art Teachers Association Olympics of the Visual Arts in Saratoga Springs on April 21st. Nineteen Babylon students, along with art teachers Pat Stork, Cheryl Schweider and Stacey Famiglietti, competed in four teams. More than 800 students from 34 school districts throughout New York State participated in the art

competition in categories including fashion design, architecture, photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, illustration and graphic design. Babylon students worked as teams and were required to create a project prior to the event. At the competition, each team worked together to complete a spontaneous team challenge. Students were judged on brainstorming, research, creativity, how they solve the problem given and craftsmanship.

One junior high school team worked on “Trashy Fashion,” creating a wearable garment entirely out of reused paper products. The other junior high school team created a sculpture based on the theme “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” The senior high school team created a sculpture using one of Adele’s songs as the subject. The second senior high school team, a graphic design team, created stamps based on American artists.

A school board has an important role in a community. A Board is supposed to be non-partisan. The Babylon Village School Board has proven time and time again that they are not. The behavior of our school board is a reflection of our community. The relationship between school board members and the connections that members have with teachers and administrators in the district all add up to the climate of public education in a community. Unfortunately, our school board has proven to be dysfunctional. This school board has a heavy influence on the spirit that characterizes a community’s impression of its school system. Unfortunately, the Babylon Board of Education has let our students and community members down. Our board does not exhibit a healthy group dynamic. It seems to be a parade of egos marching single file with personal agendas. One of the most difficult parts of being on a school board is creating a strong relationship with community, students and faculty. An effective board respects the community’s wishes and encourages the community’s trust in the school system. Our board has failed time and time again. Over the last 5 years, we have lost countless administrators between our 3 schools and several amazing teachers. We have appeared in the news more than any community should for the actions of our school board and budget committee. Our district has been embarrassed and it is time to rebuild the reputation of our prestigious village. It is time for a change! It is a time for a new voice!

A board member needs to be the voice of the community.

A board member should have a desire to work toward a stronger relationship between the district and the community it serves. A board member’s main focus should be students’ needs first and not their own. A board member should respect opinions that differ from theirs. No matter what, the board must believe in the value of education and respect our administrators and teachers. They must be dedicated to our children. They must understand that their role is to act in the best interest of the entire school community and the not their own. On this note and as stated above, Our village, schools and students are better off when we elect independent-minded and qualified candidates to serve on the board over candidates with personal agendas. It is time for you to support candidates for the school board who have a clear and focused vision and understand true shared decision making; candidates who will do their best to maintain fiscal integrity, guard your tax dollars wisely and work cooperatively with the community and the administration to provide the best possible education for the children of Babylon.

Two Eagles Honored

On Tuesday, May 3rd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin J. McCaffrey attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Troop 104’s Joseph Trifaro and Joseph Valenti. The ceremony took place at the American Legion Post 94 in Babylon and was attended by representatives from the Town of Babylon, law enforcement and the mayor as well as both Eagle Scouts’ family and friends. Joseph Trifaro and Joseph Valenti were Troop 104’s 48th and 49th Eagle Scouts respectively. They had begun scouting together as cub scouts and reached Boy Scout’s highest achievement on Tuesday in part due to the support they have given each other throughout their careers. While both Trifaro’s and Valenti’s careers in scouting reached a culmination on Tuesday, it has been marked with achievements since the

beginning. Respectively, they hold 38 and 40 merit badges each, in fields such as aviation, emergency preparedness, family life and personal fitness. Additionally, Trifaro held various scout leadership positions, including patrol leader, quartermaster and cook. Valenti also held scout leadership positions, including patrol leader and assistant senior patrol leader. “The partnership these two scouts have shown throughout their careers is a testament to the type of foundation and support network Boy Scouts of America fosters,” said McCaffrey. “Both Joseph Trifaro and Joseph Valenti show incredible promise and will certainly be people the Babylon community can rely on now and in the future.” An Eagle Scout’s service project is the crowning achievement of a candidate’s journey to Scouting’s highest

rank. The project must be one that benefits the community, in addition to being planned and managed by the candidate. This process necessarily involves formulating a project idea, determining the required human and material resources and demonstrating unwavering leadership throughout the process. For his project, Joseph Trifaro planned and supervised the building of a new wooden podium for the American Legion Post 94. The project generated 82 total hours of work from Trifaro, his family and his friends. Joseph Valenti’s project included planting a small memorial garden in the rear of the Bethpage Fire Department Engine Company 5’s fire house. This project was in memory of a family friend who passed away suddenly and generated a total of 79 hours.

local food banks. Students who participate in the Practice-A-Thon document their daily practice on a calendar. Sponsors pledge an amount of their choice for every minute that student practices in March. Pledges can be anywhere from $.01 per minute and higher.

Poets for a Purpose In the outdoor courtyard at Babylon Elementary School, first-graders in Bernadette Forthmuller’s class celebrated spring with a poetry reading on April 27th. Invited guests gathered in the courtyard to hear each student share their special poem on the topic of Arbor Day, Earth

Day or spring. After filling a whole book with their poetry, the first-grade students had the option of choosing an acrostic, shape or freeverse poem to share with the audience. The poets reflected on how much they cared for the planet as well as their

Babylon Elementary School students designed and tested their own catapults on April 28th as part of a hands-on experiment using the forces of motion and the effects of gravity. Second-graders in Beth Dieterich’s class have been writing lab reports, generating hypotheses

and writing conclusions in their “writing like a scientist” unit. As a culminating activity, the students designed and tested their own catapults. Using popsicle sticks, tape, rubber bands, plastic spoons and a wooden block, the second-graders worked in teams of three to build a catapult. The groups then

tested their designs using a cotton ball and Ping-Pong ball after making educated predications on which ball would launch the furthest distance. After carefully measuring and recording their results, the second-graders will write lab reports based on their findings.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez at the 6th Annual Babylon Art Festival. The event, which is sponsored by the Town of Babylon and the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), featured an exhibit of artwork from students representing Babylon Village School District, Farmingdale State College, and Dowling

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral-speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.
