A little rain could not dampen any spirits as the Town of Babylon hosted its long-awaited 150th Anniversary parade! Headed off by Town Historian Mary Cascone and Town of Babylon Parks, the parade included floats dedicated to the history of each hamlet and village that make up the Town. Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the town board led the parade in the 150th commemorative float and stood by in the rain to waive to each hamlet as they marched on by.

BACCA’S 33rd Annual Judged Art Show

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), with the Town of Babylon, presents its 33rd Annual Judged Art Show from May 15 through June 13, 2023 at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street, Babylon, NY 11702. The show is open to all Long Island and Metro Area artists in the following categories: Oils, Acrylics, Watercolors, Drawing (Pencil, Pen,

Marker, Colored Pencil), Charcoal & Pastels, Mixed Media, Digital, Photography, and Sculpture. There are also two student categories, Grades 5-8 and Grades 9-12. A Call to Artists has been issued inviting all Long Island and Metro artists to register and submit up to 3 current works not previously exhibited in a BACCA show. All registered artists will have at least one piece accepted.

The registration deadline is Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 11:59PM.Registration information, the submission form, and the payment form are available on the BACCA website at www.babylonarts. org/judged-art-show. Cash awards and ribbons will be presented to the winning entries. The Awards Ceremony & Reception will take place at Old Town Hall on Wednesday, May 17, 2023

Diego Garcia will be this year’s Art Show Judge. Long Island born and raised, selftaught painter Diego Garcia has had a natural passion for art since childhood. Diego began his artistic journey by finding inspiration in popular icons like Michael Jackson and Walt Disney. The graffiti culture and honors art classes at Brentwood High School catalyzed Diego’s talents at a very young age. He started to take his craft seriously around age 17 with commission work and local group exhibitions. Since 2015, the artist has had six successful solo gallery exhibitions, alongside many group and highlighted artist showcases, from Long Island to Chelsea, NY.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

As like any non-profit, their volunteers play a large role in their e orts. Each and every person who gives their time as a volunteer is dedicated to help support their mission. Additionally, donations of any size are accepted and appreciated. Your donation will help preserve our rich musical heritage and assist in providing music education programs for children and adults, including scholarships to deserving high school students. Specific donation amounts will allow you to get your name/ information in their Hall of Fame, engraved on either a Quarter Note ($250), Half Note ($500) or Whole Note ($1000).

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

BSA Troop 399 Helps Clean Sampawams Creek

On April 15, 2023, Boy Scout Troop 399 collaborated with the Creek Defenders of the Save the Great South Bay organization to clear pollution and debris from Sampawams Creek. Troop 399 Scouts, Director of the Save the Great South Bay Oyster Project Andy Mirchel, leaders, and parents removed a great deal of trash from the creek located near West

Islip to improve creek flow. Save the Great South Bay works with the local community residents and organizations to clear and clean creeks that flow into the Great South Bay and, thereby, maintain its environmental health.

Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May 13, 2023

Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.

“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help make sure that no one on

Long Island goes hungry.”

Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers).

In addition, personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of the most successful.”

Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin

Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the pandemic.

Boy Scout Troop 399 Celebrated Its Winter Court Of Honor

On March 16, 2023, Boy Scout Troop 399 celebrated its Winter Court of Honor. More than 25 scouts achieved a higher rank and/or were awarded merit badges at the ceremony. The Court of Honor was attended by Troop 399 Scouts, the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoumasters, Committee members, and parents. Boy Scouts

Daniel A. and Matthew C served as the Chaplain and Court of Honor Master of Ceremonies. All were proud of the Scouts’ dedication and accomplishments.

Boy Scout Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY, and a member of the Sagtikos District of the Boy Scouts of America’s Suffolk County Council.

Troop 399 is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has been offering scouting opportunities and teaching boys to become leaders and serve their community for more than 40 years. Meetings are held most Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM during the school year.
